Alaska Airlines is pushing to transform Seattle into a global gateway with plans for 12 long-haul destinations by 2030. As part of that, the airline has officially launched flights between its hub in Seattle and Tokyo, Japan, which are operated by Hawaiian Airlines.

The recent merger between Alaska and Hawaiian has created some unique possibilities for travelers, now including the opportunity to book an Alaska Airlines flight to Japan, despite Alaska Airlines only operating narrow-body aircraft. Fortunately, Hawaiian has some nice widebody options to choose from.

Let’s take a look at his new route and what it means for the future of West Coast travel to Asia.

Seattle to Tokyo — Operated by Hawaiian Airlines

Alaska Airlines is taking full advantage of its growing widebody fleet — thanks to its merger with Hawaiian Airlines — and plans to transform its hometown airport, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), into a “premier global gateway” by 2030.

With 12 international destinations operated with long-haul aircraft in the works, Alaska plans to fly from Seattle to Seoul, Tokyo, and beyond.

Alaska’s first widebody international flight is between Seattle and Tokyo Narita (NRT) and offers daily nonstop service operated by a Hawaiian Airlines A330 that features 18 lie-flat seats in business class and 260 seats in economy.

Although Hawaiian’s A330 doesn’t have the most modern business class product, future routes will feature the airline’s new 787 Dreamliner complete with the stunning Leihōkū Suites.

Our growing fleet of widebody aircraft, which includes the flagship 787 Dreamliner, unleashes a world of possibilities of where we can fly to from Seattle. Looking ahead, we’ll have exciting additional milestones as we share the new international routes we’ll be launching in the coming years, including destinations in Europe, as part of our plans to serve at least 12 international destinations with widebody aircraft from Seattle by 2030.

Guests in all service classes can expect multiple hot meals, free Starlink Wi-Fi, in-flight entertainment, and amenity kits from the Hawaiʻi lifestyle brand Noho Home.

How To Book These Flights

Japan continues to be an extremely popular destination, so more flights are always welcome.

The new Alaska Airlines flight will operate on the following schedule:

  • Depart Seattle (SEA) at 1:40 p.m. and arrive in Tokyo (NRT) at 4 p.m. (+1)
  • Depart Tokyo (NRT) at 6:25 p.m. and arrive in Seattle (SEA) at 11:30 a.m.

If you want to experience this flight, you have a few options. If you’re going to pay with cash, you can do a quick search on Google Flights and find flights for less than $500 each way.

Or, if you prefer to pay with points and miles, you can run some searches on sites like Seats.aero to find award availability.

At the time of writing, economy seats are available for 30,000 Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles or 95,000 in business class.

Hot Tip:

Using Alaska Airlines miles isn’t the only way to get across the Pacific. Here are the best ways to fly to Japan using points and miles, regardless of which airline you might fly with.

Final Thoughts

Alaska Airlines will debut its inaugural flight from Seattle to Tokyo today, May 12. Hawaiian Airlines will operate the flight.

This is the first step in the airline’s plan to transform Seattle into a premier global gateway.
