American Airlines and Germany’s Condor Announce Interline Partnership

American Airlines has a new international airline partner in Condor, a leisure-focused German airline. The new partnership will make it easier for American’s passengers to access Condor’s network in Germany and beyond, and vice versa for Condor’s passengers in the U.S.

“American’s new agreement with Condor underscores our commitment to connect people with the places that matter most,” said Jeff Ogar, managing director of alliances at American Airlines. “Combining our extensive North American network with Condor’s presence in Germany and Europe creates a winning proposition for our mutual customers.

Here’s what you should know about this new tie-up.

American and Condor Sign Interline Agreement

American Airlines and Condor have signed a new interline agreement, meaning the 2 airlines now cooperate at a basic level to make journeys more seamless for passengers of both airlines.

This new interline agreement will allow passengers to book itineraries involving travel on both airlines on a single ticket and will allow baggage to be checked to travelers’ final destinations on either end, whether travel originates in the U.S. or Europe. Note, however, that this is just an interline agreement, so there are no implications for reciprocal loyalty perks or mileage earning and redemption.

Passengers on either airline will be able to connect to each other’s networks at Condor’s U.S. gateways, which include Boston (BOS), Los Angeles (LAX), and New York (JFK). Next summer, Condor will begin flying to Chicago (ORD). On the flip side, American flyers heading to Europe will be able to use connections provided by Condor’s bases in Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC).

Single-ticket itineraries involving both carriers are not yet available for booking, but should be “soon,” according to a Condor press release.

Is This a Sign of Bigger Things To Come?

While this partnership is nothing more than an interline agreement at this point, it’s certainly an interesting one. Germany is one of the most important aviation hubs in Europe (and, arguably, the world), and American and its Oneworld alliance partners are relatively weak in the market, which is dominated by Star Alliance and German flag carrier Lufthansa. While Condor doesn’t have nearly as large a presence as Lufthansa, it’s been making an effort to better compete in terms of onboard offering, route network, and more.

In the U.S., Condor’s gateway cities align well with American’s route network. The carrier has hubs in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York, and offers a decent slate of routes from Boston, despite it not being an official hub for the airline.

Again, the agreement announced today is a fairly basic interline agreement, but one has to wonder whether this signals deeper cooperation to come — and possibly even Oneworld membership for Condor, which is hoping to raise its profile and expand its reach to more of the world.
