In a year of major loyalty reshuffles, American Airlines is once again retooling its credit card ecosystem — and the latest move cements a longtime relationship. American has renewed its decades-long partnership with Mastercard, locking in the global payments network as the exclusive provider behind all AAdvantage co-branded credit cards.

The timing of this renewed agreement is no coincidence. With American recently announcing it will wind down its Barclays-issued credit cards and return to Citi as its sole card issuer, the airline is clearly streamlining its credit card strategy.

Here’s what travelers should know about the Mastercard deal — and what could be coming next.

American and Mastercard Double Down on Co-Branded Travel, Extend Partnership

American Airlines and Mastercard have been partners for nearly 40 years, and the renewed agreement signals a deepening of that collaboration. Mastercard will continue to serve as the exclusive payment network behind AAdvantage co-branded cards, powering transactions, loyalty technology, and cardholder benefits.

According to both companies, the renewed partnership aims to enhance the travel experience for AAdvantage members by introducing more personalized rewards, better payment security, and expanded access to Mastercard’s “Priceless Experiences.” These range from exclusive cultural events to VIP travel perks, often bundled as value-adds for premium cardholders.

Beyond perks, Mastercard’s infrastructure is expected to drive real-time fraud detection, smoother booking experiences, and integrated offers across American’s ecosystem. For travelers, that means faster transactions and more seamless redemptions — and potentially a richer rewards experience on the back end.

What This Means for Travelers: A New Era of Credit Card Consolidation

While the Mastercard news is significant, the real shake-up lies in what’s happening behind the scenes with American Airlines’ card issuing partners. In a separate announcement in late 2024, American confirmed that Barclays-issued AAdvantage credit cards will be phased out by 2026, with all accounts transitioning to Citi — the airline’s legacy credit card partner.

Citi and American have worked together for nearly 40 years, but the current realignment suggests something more strategic. Notably, the press release alluded to an “expanded loyalty offering” between Citi ThankYou Points and AAdvantage, prompting speculation that Citi may soon reintroduce AAdvantage as a transfer partner — either permanently or in a promotional capacity. These Citi-AA transfers existed temporarily in 2021.

The timing is intriguing. Citi has confirmed it will launch a new ultra-premium Strata Elite credit card, and multiple reports suggest that American Airlines could be featured as a points transfer partner at launch. If true, this would position Citi as not only the exclusive co-branded issuer for American but also as a key player in the flexible rewards space — a major shift for travelers who’ve long looked to Amex and Chase for transfer flexibility.

If Barclays was a relic of the U.S. Airways merger, this latest move is American’s way of modernizing its loyalty partnerships — and making Citi and Mastercard the cornerstones of its future rewards strategy.

Bottom Line:

There’s nothing confirmed yet, but the puzzle pieces and rumors look like Citi will launch the Strata Elite as a new top-tier Mastercard called World Legend and potentially offer points transfers to American Airlines exclusively with this card.

Final Thoughts

While no immediate action is required for current cardholders, these moves represent a meaningful evolution in American’s credit card program. Mastercard stays on as the exclusive network, Barclays exits the picture at the turn of the year, and Citi is poised to play a larger role — maybe even beyond co-branded cards into other areas.

For travelers and points enthusiasts, that could mean new cards, better perks, and a fresh way to earn and redeem AAdvantage miles. As always, the real value will lie in how these programs translate into real-world travel — and we’ll be watching closely as more details emerge.

With a rumored new premium card from Citi set to drop in the coming weeks, we may not have to wait long.
