American Airlines and Spanish flag carrier Iberia have expanded their existing codeshare agreement to 26 new routes.

From now on, passengers will be able to connect seamlessly at Chicago O’Hare (ORD) between Iberia’s flights from Spain and American’s flights to 26 more U.S. destinations.

Let’s take a look at the details.

American and Iberia’s Expanded Codeshare Agreement

Codeshare agreements facilitate easier travel across 2 or more airlines. They allow carriers to sell tickets on partners’ planes under their own flight numbers, giving passengers more options for itineraries and connections.

The expansion of the codeshare agreement between Oneworld alliance partners American Airlines and Iberia to 26 additional cities around the U.S. will enable more seamless journeys between the U.S. and Spain via American’s hub at Chicago O’Hare (ORD). Of course, bags will be checked through to a passenger’s final destination as part of the codeshare agreement.

Here’s a look at the new cities that have come into the fold:

  • Appleton, Wisconsin (ATW)
  • Atlanta (ATL)
  • Bentonville/Fayetteville, Arkansas (XNA)
  • Buffalo (BUF)
  • Champaign, Illinois (CMI)
  • Charlotte (CLT)
  • Dayton, Ohio (DAY)
  • Fargo, North Dakota (FAR)
  • Green Bay, Wisconsin (GRB)
  • Knoxville, Tennessee (TYS)
  • Memphis (MEM)
  • Miami (MIA)
  • Milwaukee (MKE)
  • New Orleans (MSY)
  • Norfolk, Virginia (ORF)
  • Oklahoma City (OKC)
  • Pittsburgh (PIT)
  • Raleigh-Durham (RDU)

Here’s an example of a flight you can now book from Wichita to Madrid via Chicago on a single ticket. It’s bookable with American Airlines, even though Iberia operates the long-haul segment.

Of course, American Airlines flies nonstop to Madrid (and Barcelona) from Chicago. Still, the expansion of this codeshare agreement means AA flyers will have more options, as American’s booking systems will show itineraries involving its own flights in addition to Iberia’s.

Iberia operates both its newer Airbus A350s and older Airbus A330s on its nonstop route from Madrid to Chicago, while American primarily uses the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Hot Tip:

If you have elite status with American Airlines’ AAdvantage frequent flyer program, you’ll enjoy most of the same perks and benefits when flying with Iberia as you would with American. Be sure to include your AAdvantage number in the booking to avoid missing out.

Final Thoughts

American Airlines and Iberia have strengthened their codeshare agreement to 26 additional U.S. cities via Chicago. This is good news for all the people based in these cities, who will now have more options for seamless travel to Spain with a simple layover in Chicago.
