Recently, American Airlines and Qatar Airways announced a strategic alliance, allowing customers from both airlines to connect to hundreds of destinations worldwide on a single ticket. Now, American Airlines is adding its code to several Qatar Airways flights, allowing customers to fly to more destinations from the U.S.
Some companies, including the U.S. government, require employees to fly on an American-based airline
If you’re flying on the new JFK-DOH flight, you’re likely not just stopping in Qatar; many customers will be flying onward to various countries throughout the world, and this is where the strategic alliance of codeshares comes into place.
New Codeshares
When American places its code on Qatar flights, it essentially acts as someone flying on American flight all the way to their final destination, though the flight will be operated by a different carrier. It’s worth noting that Qatar has its code on a number of domestic American Airlines flights.
16 new countries will be added to the codeshare list, enabling an American flyer to fly to these destinations on a single ticket:
Ethiopia
Indonesia
Jordan
Kenya
Malaysia
Maldives
Oman
Pakistan
Seychelles
Singapore
Sri Lanka
Tanzania
Thailand
Uganda
Zambia
Zimbabwe
While both American and Qatar are in the Oneworld alliance, the ability to purchase a flight on a single reservation can be somewhat limited, depending on the carrier. Often, carriers within an alliance will form additional partnerships and opportunities to create a better experience for customers on either carrier.
If you are an American Airlines customer and intend on flying into Africa, the Middle East, or Southeast Asia, the new codeshare flights operated by Qatar Airways will be invaluable to you. You’re able to take American’s new flight from New York to Doha and can connect on to one of Qatar’s many flights to 16 new cities.
