American Express has announced the acquisition of TheFork, a major online restaurant platform based in Europe, with more than 50,000 restaurants across 11 countries on the continent.

The move will help the issuer expand its dining offerings in Europe, where cardmembers are clamoring for better access to top restaurants across the continent. Plus, it could be good news for those with an Amex card that offers a dining credit.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Amex Intends To Acquire TheFork From Tripadvisor

American Express plans to purchase TheFork, a European restaurant reservation and management platform, from Tripadvisor.

This would be a meaningful expansion of Amex’s dining platform, which has grown in recent years thanks to acquisitions of Resy and Tock. If and when the acquisition of TheFork is completed, Amex will offer its cardmembers more than 75,000 restaurants to book and potentially use valuable dining credits at.

“Dining is one of the most important ways people engage with our brand,” said Rafa Marquez, president of international card services at American Express. “Over time, the proposed acquisition would help us enrich our differentiated Membership Model by offering Card Members more ways to discover, book, and access great restaurants.”

The deal, which is expected to close before the end of this year, is valued at $700 million. Amex says TheFork would continue to operate under its own brand and its current leadership structure.

What Does This Mean for Cardholders?

Having more options for booking restaurants in the American Express ecosystem is always good news, but there’s a specific possibility that makes this even more interesting.

We just learned that Amex, unfortunately, will be limiting the number of restaurants that are eligible for annual Resy credits that come as perks of the following cards as of August 1:

The acquisition of TheFork could — in the future — give cardmembers more options for using these credits. This likely wouldn’t happen right away, given that Amex says TheFork will continue to operate independently after the acquisition, but it stands to reason that the issuer may want to integrate its 3 separate dining platforms into 1 for a more streamlined operation.

This type of scenario could make it easier for cardmembers to use their dining credits, which would be a welcome reversal of recent restrictions.

Final Thoughts

American Express is leaning fully into its dining program with its plan to acquire a major European restaurant reservation and management platform. There’s a lot more to learn about this acquisition and how it will fit into the issuer’s current dining program, but we hope that it will lead specifically to more options for eligible cardmembers to use their dining credits.
