Walt Disney World resorts generally aren’t traditional points hotels, but you don’t necessarily have to stay on the property to have an amazing experience.

I’ve found that booking certain off-property hotels with the Platinum Card® from American Express can be a sweet spot. This travel card offers substantial benefits for participating hotels on AmexTravel.com, alongside Disney perks that can elevate your stay, such as early theme park entry, advance Lightning Lane availability, and extended evening hours.

Here are the hotels I’d book with my Amex Platinum card, and a look at the extra value I get as a guest.

Booking these properties comes with additional benefits, including a $100 property credit (typically good for dining or spa services) and a room upgrade upon arrival, when available. Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts properties go a step further, offering daily breakfast for 2 guests, a guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout, and early 12 p.m. check-in, when available.

Fine Hotels + Resorts hotels are generally more upscale: think the Waldorf Astoria Orlando or the Four Seasons Resort Orlando. The Hotel Collection offers a wider variety of participating properties, including the Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel and the JW Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes.

My Amex Platinum card also gives me automatic Marriott Bonvoy Gold and Hilton Honors Gold elite status upon enrollment. Depending on the program, hotel elite status offers benefits such as room upgrades and food and beverage credits. There are numerous Marriott and Hilton hotels (that also participate in Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection) near Disney World where these benefits can be put to good use.

Hot Tip: Apply and find out if you’re eligible for a welcome bonus offer of as high as 175,000 points with the Amex Platinum. Welcome offers may vary, and you may not be eligible for an offer.

Disney World Hotel Benefits

The best Disney World resort guest benefits are mostly limited to the on-property resorts, but some off-property hotels and resorts qualify for the following benefits.

Early Entry

With early entry, you can get into any of the parks 30 minutes before opening time. This is a great benefit if you’d like to hit the ground running and knock out rides before the official opening time.

For example, when I stayed at Walt Disney World Dolphin near EPCOT, we took the FriendShip Boat from the resort to EPCOT’s International Gateway entrance and arrived around 8:15 a.m. ahead of the park’s 9 a.m. opening time. We were let in a few minutes before 8:30 a.m. and started our day with an extremely short line for Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure.

EPCOT early entry was just a boat ride away at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel.

Partner hotels that offer early entry benefits include:

Many of these properties are hotels in the Disney Springs area.

Extended Evening Hours

Access to extended evening hours is more restrictive than early entry, as it’s available only to Disney World Deluxe resort guests and just a few partner resorts:

  • Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel
  • Walt Disney World Swan Hotel
  • Walt Disney World Swan Reserve
  • Shades of Green

Extended evening hours give qualifying guests extra hours after a park’s normal closing time — usually 2 hours. This benefit isn’t available at every park or every night, but it can offer shorter lines for attractions (and more time in the park after the sun goes down).

7-Day Advance Lightning Lanes

Buying Lightning Lanes early is another benefit Disney offers to a limited number of partner resorts (the same ones that get extended evening hours above).

With this benefit, you can purchase Lightning Lane passes starting 7 days before the first day of your resort stay. You can make purchases for the length of your stay, up to 14 days. Other guests can book up to 3 days in advance, so a 4-day head start can help when you want to book popular Lightning Lane attractions for early-day spots.

Hot Tip:

A major benefit you can only get at on-property Disney World resorts is free water park entry, available on arrival day during select summer dates.

Any of these properties can offer a great combination of benefits, but the Walt Disney World Dolphin, Swan, and Swan Reserve check every box with The Hotel Collection, Marriott Bonvoy Gold, and Disney World park benefits:

  • $150 credit toward eligible on-property charges
  • Room upgrade upon arrival, when available
  • Noon check-in, when available
  • 4 p.m. late checkout, when available
  • Early entry
  • Extended evening hours
  • 7-day advance Lightning Lane booking
Hot Tip:

You can also use Amex Membership Rewards points on AmexTravel.com, but the rate is poor at 0.7 cents per point — well below our 2.2-cent valuation. While redeeming Marriott Bonvoy points or Hilton Honors points is another option, you wouldn’t get the Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection benefits.

Final Thoughts

When booking your Disney World vacation, it’s always worth checking a few different ways to book a property, as you may find a better rate booking directly, using points, or using a travel portal.

Booking the Walt Disney World Dolphin, Swan, and Swan Reserve properties with the Amex Platinum card offers the best combination of benefits, but the Waldorf Astoria Orlando and Four Seasons Resort Orlando are better for luxury stays, maximize Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits, and still offer early entry to Disney World parks.
