Update:The offer mentioned below has expired and is no longer available.

Tulum’s new airport officially opens tomorrow for international flights, and almost every U.S. airline is launching routes to follow. Travelers will no longer have to endure the 2-hour drive between Cancun and Tulum thanks to this convenient airport option.

Along with this slate of new routes comes plenty of award availability over the next year — here’s how you can book flights to Mexico for a record deal!

Award Deal — Details

The new Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport (TQO) is located 24 miles away from the center of Tulum town. The area is known for its gorgeous boutique hotels, but major hotel chains have been opening resorts that are bookable with points, such as the Hilton Tulum Riviera Maya All-Inclusive Resort.

Now, our team has found excellent award availability over the next year to get to Tulum.

  • Class: Economy or business
  • Route: Chicago (ORD), Dallas (DFW), Houston (IAH), Miami (MIA), New York (JFK) and many more cities to Tulum (TQO)
  • Airline: American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, and United Airlines
  • Cost: As low as 8,500 points (economy) and 20,000 points (business class) and $48 in taxes & fees
  • Travel Dates: Now through March 2025
  • Award Seats: Up to 9 passengers per route

How to Book

It’ll be worth upgrading to Main Cabin from basic economy on Delta for only 5,000 more SkyMiles.

And if you have an eligible Delta credit card, you can save 15% off award flights so that the same ticket would cost 8,500 miles.

We also found cheap award flights from JetBlue TrueBlue, which offers one-way flights for as low as 8,700 TrueBlue points on its nonstop New York (JFK) to Tulum (TQO) route:

For not much more, you can book American Airlines for 10,000 AAdvantage miles in economy or 20,000 miles in business — even if you need to book a layover like this flight from Raleigh (RDU) to Tulum (TQO) via Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW):

United Airlines charges 15,000 MileagePlus miles one-way for economy tickets.

But remember that you can book “Saver” award tickets for much cheaper through its partner, Air Canada, which charges just 10,000 Aeroplan miles for the same flights in economy (and half the rate in business class):

Hot Tip:

Don’t have enough miles for this award deal? Remember that you can transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to JetBlue, Delta, and Air Canada, as well as transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to JetBlue, United, and Air Canada.

Final Thoughts

The ability to redeem 17,000 miles for a round-trip flight to Tulum is a deal worth writing about.
