How To Use AwardTool Pro To Find Better Award Tickets

AwardTool Pro has an extensive list of upgrades over the free AwardTool plan, but its standout feature is the ability to run 32-entry searches for award tickets. This lets you add up to 32 variables to your searches, including multiple origin and destination airports, as well as travel dates.

AwardTool searches most major airline loyalty programs.

In its most basic form, you can use this to search a single route across 32 days or search from 1 departure to 2 arrival airports across 16 days. Better yet, you have complete control over how you use your 32 entries, so if you search a smaller date range, you could search for flights from multiple origin airports to multiple destination airports.

Here’s an example. Say you live in New York City and are planning a trip to Central Europe. You’d like to fly from New York (JFK) or Newark (EWR) but don’t mind positioning to Philadelphia (PHL). Additionally, you want to fly to Berlin (BER) or Prague (PRG) at the beginning of your trip. You can search all of these routes at once over 5 days to maximize your 32 entries.

In my testing, AwardTool’s real-time search results have proven to be largely accurate, so you don’t have to worry much about phantom award space. If you don’t find a flight you like right away, AwardTool Pro members can set up to 70 award alerts with SMS and email notifications.

AwardTool Pro members also have access to Panorama search, which lets you run even broader searches. You can search for flights between as many airports or regions as you’d like across a 90-day period.

For example, you could search for all available award flights from North America to Asia and Europe and see 3 months of award space at once. Fortunately, there are extensive filters available to narrow down your search results.

The only downside to using Panorama over AwardTool’s standard search function is that it relies on AwardTool’s cached flight data, whereas standard searches are performed in real time. As a result, be sure to verify that the flights you find with Panorama are still available by running a live search.

Hot Tip:

Take a closer look at the Panorama search options if you’d like to narrow down your search. Instead of searching for all flights from, say, North America to Europe, you can instead search for flights from the East Coast to Eastern Europe. There are various regions available. Simply type their name into the origin or destination box to locate them.

These 2 features alone make AwardTool Pro worth the annual fee to me. I’ve used it to book dozens of flights for myself and others since I subscribed, and it’s saved me hours of time in the process. Real-Time and Panorama Award Alerts

As mentioned earlier, you can set up to 70 real-time award alerts and unlimited Panorama award alerts, and you can even receive SMS notifications for real-time award alerts. By comparison, those on the free AwardTool plan can only set 3 real-time award alerts and do not have access to Panorama alerts.

When you set up an award alert, AwardTool runs searches for your desired itinerary periodically throughout the day. When the tool finds a flight that matches your search criteria, you will receive an email or text message, allowing you to book it right away.

Expanded Access to Hotel Data and Flight Deals

AwardTool has 2 other interesting features to be aware of: deals and hotels.

Deals leverages cached data to show you the best deals from each loyalty program that AwardTool supports. This is a great place to look for flights if you have a flexible travel schedule and want to maximize the value of your points. Free AwardTool members can use this tool, but AwardTool Pro members receive expanded access with the most comprehensive data available.

Meanwhile, the hotels feature shows award pricing for all hotels in a city across 4 hotel loyalty programs: Hilton Honors, IHG One Rewards, Marriott Bonvoy, and World of Hyatt. When you find a hotel you’re interested in, you can view a year’s worth of pricing for that hotel at once using the calendar search function.

As with the deals, AwardTool members on the free plan can use the hotels feature at no charge. However, free members can only view yearly hotel pricing 3 times per day. This is fine for day-to-day searches, but it can be a roadblock if you’re searching for multiple hotels on a multistop trip. AwardTool Pro includes unlimited access to yearly hotel award pricing.

Quick disclosure: I’ve noticed that AwardTool’s hotel award data isn’t as accurate as its flight award data. Specifically, when searching for hotel stays in the future, it sometimes indicates that hotels do not have available award nights, even though bookable award nights are listed on the hotel group’s website. Take AwardTool’s award pricing with a grain of salt and refer to the hotel’s website for the most accurate award pricing and availability.

Submit up to 2 Prioritized Route Requests Every Day

AwardTool’s Routes feature lets you view up to a year’s worth of award pricing for certain routes. This feature is broken down by loyalty program, and new routes are added based on user requests. Like the deals and Panorama features, this feature uses cached data, so it might not be accurate when you view it. However, it provides a good starting point when planning a trip and you want to know how many miles you need.

If you’re looking for broad pricing data for a specific route in AwardTool but don’t see it, or if you find the route you’re looking for but it’s outdated, you can request a new route or refresh it. AwardTool users on the free plan are limited to 1 request every 3 days, while AwardTool Pro members get 2 prioritized requests every day.
