I just booked a flight using an OTA for the first time since grad school. As someone who has spent the last 7 years warning people against doing exactly that, this is a big deal.

The reason for this brief moment of hypocrisy? I found a fare from Japan to Europe in July, flying Japan Airlines’ new business class, for less than the price of an economy ticket. So yes, I caved.

This seemed like the perfect opportunity to discuss the pros and cons of booking through an OTA — and explain in more detail why I felt confident breaking my travel-booking rule.

Why I Typically Avoid Booking Flights Through OTAs

As a high school and college student, my go-to for booking flights was Skyscanner. It was easy to search for my preferred route, click the link to the cheapest website selling the ticket, and book (probably with a debit card) without a care in the world. This was fine when I was taking short European hops with nothing but a backpack and a tenner in my pocket.

When I moved to London, started my first big-boy job, and dipped my toes into the world of points and miles, everything changed. Ironically, it was working as a travel agent at Flight Centre that really showed me why avoiding online (and in-person) travel agents is usually the safer move, but that’s a story for another day.

The biggest issue is this: When you book through an OTA, the airline often isn’t responsible for helping you after the booking is made. Oftentimes, even using the PNR (reservation number) to log in to the airline’s booking portal results in an error message asking you to contact the third-party site instead.

That means things like seat selection, baggage, or flight changes can quickly turn into a frustrating back-and-forth. This can also turn into a back-and-forth, where the airline tells you to contact the OTA, and the OTA tells you to contact the airline.

If that’s not enough to dissuade you, there’s a chance that booking via an OTA could mean you might not be acknowledged by your preferred frequent flyer program. We’ve seen versions of this before, including when American Airlines limited earnings on some third-party bookings, only to reverse it.

I’ve never found myself in such a predicament, but I have heard enough stories from regretful people who have over the years. That said, I recently found myself willing to risk all. I came across a one-way Japan Airlines business class ticket from Seoul (ICN) to Paris (CDG), connecting in Tokyo, for just $1,600, which caused me to risk it all (with some due diligence, of course).

How This Japan Airlines Fare Made Me Break My Rule

I’ve wanted to fly JAL’s new business class on the Airbus A350-1000 since it launched in 2024 (I can’t believe it’s been over 2 years). I’m visiting Japan for the first time this summer, and I was determined to factor in flying this new seat.

I wasn’t using points for this trip — I’m saving those for a few bigger redemptions later — and my travel dates in late July weren’t flexible. And keep in mind that the only cities in Europe where JAL currently sends its A350S are London (LHR) and Paris (CDG). That combination made finding a deal a lot harder. I was going to have my work cut out for me.

I headed straight to Google Flights — my go-to search engine — and started my research.

How I Found the Deal

With fares for nonstops from Haneda (HND) to Paris starting at $3,200 and to London from $4,000, those were out of the question. The next trick was checking routes that departed from other Asian cities, connected in Tokyo, and flew JAL’s Airbus A350 to either London or Paris. This is a tried-and-tested method I’ve used for years to score discounted business class tickets.

I planned to visit Seoul for the first time before heading back to Europe, so I set Seoul as my departure city and changed the airline filter to show only JAL options. That’s when Google Flights started showing one-way fares for $1,600. Considering that it was half the cost of the first nonstop options, things were starting to look up.

The routing would have me fly from Seoul (ICN) to Tokyo Narita (NRT) with an overnight layover, then depart the next morning from Tokyo Haneda (HND). That kind of inconvenience probably influenced the much lower fare.

I then selected the flight and saw that booking with Trip.com was the only way to get this price. Feeling both curious and dubious, I followed the link and was presented with the following 3 options for booking.

At that point, I slowed down and started double-checking everything.

Why I Felt Comfortable Booking Through an OTA (This Time)

I first wanted to make sure that the long-haul leg to Europe was definitely in business class and not a mistake fare. It clearly stated economy for the first leg and business for the second, and I was perfectly happy to fly in economy for the short hop from Seoul to Tokyo. The increased baggage allowance of 3 bags also solidified this as a legitimate business class booking.

Then I noticed the recommended option included free cancellation. This meant I’d be able to change or cancel the ticket for free, even after confirming and paying. The fact that it was only £4 ($5.30) more than the nonrefundable option was an even bigger shock. Even when booking business class directly with an airline, there’s often a premium charge for a fully refundable or flexible fare.

I couldn’t believe it was almost the same price to make the ticket fully flexible. Image Credit: Trip.com

As convinced as I was beginning to feel that Trip.com was the real deal, I needed a little more reassurance. The final stage of the booking process allowed me to choose and confirm my seats — for free! Once I was presented with the seat map of the Japan Airlines A350-1000 and could select window seat 9A, I knew I was in.

It was happening: I was about to spend $1,600 on a business class ticket using an OTA.

Once I’d confirmed, I received an email stating that the payment had been received but that the tickets hadn’t been issued, which could take up to 2 hours. This was followed by a statement that any price increase would be covered by Trip.com, which I also did not expect.

About 15 minutes later, I received a confirmation email from Trip.com that my booking was complete, including a JAL booking reference and ticket number. That was all the reassurance I needed to know I’d just booked a legitimate fare and could start getting excited about flying one of the best business class seats in the world!

As a final check, I entered the booking reference or ticket number in JAL’s booking management section on its website. An error message informed me that I needed to contact the entity I booked with to make any changes, which is pretty standard for third-party flight bookings.

All that’s left now is showing up at Seoul (ICN) at the end of July to see whether I will indeed be flying JAL’s new business class from Haneda to Paris.

Final Thoughts

The combination of little flexibility, a bucket-list opportunity, and heavy due diligence led me to book JAL’s business class through an OTA. To be honest, it still doesn’t feel real.

Breaking this rule was not a rash decision, and if it hadn’t been for the free cancellation option, the ability to choose a seat, and being given a JAL ticket number, I would have probably let this one slide.

Would I do it again? I’ll wait and see what happens at the airport in July before I can answer this. However, if a similar opportunity presented itself in the future, I can’t see why I wouldn’t put my trust in an OTA again. That said, I’ll still always advise booking directly with the airline where possible.
