Update:

The offer mentioned below has expired and is no longer available.

Many award travelers, myself included, dread the term “dynamic pricing” due to the uncertainty of fluctuating award rates. That’s exactly what happened to the popular Virgin Atlantic Flying Club loyalty program, which transitioned to dynamic pricing recently.

To my surprise, when I reviewed award pricing and availability, I discovered some excellent redemption opportunities — some even better than what was offered under the previous award chart.

With that in mind — and by taking advantage of a limited-time transfer bonus available until December 31, 2024 — I secured a round-trip business class flight to Europe for only 42,000 points. Here’s how you can do the same, but only if you act fast.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Overview

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club is the loyalty program of the London-based carrier. It’s easy to earn Flying Club points when flying with Virgin Atlantic, its transfer partners, or through everyday spending with partner companies. These points can then be redeemed for aspirational award travel.

In fact, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club has long been one of my favorite loyalty programs, primarily due to its non-alliance partnership with All Nippon Airways (ANA). Case in point: using Flying Club points was the best way to book ANA First Class using points. However, the program has historically faced significant drawbacks — most notably, exorbitant carrier-imposed surcharges reaching nearly $1,000 for Virgin Atlantic flights between the U.S. and the U.K.

Booking Virgin Atlantic Upper Class With Points

With Virgin’s new dynamic pricing model, the number of points needed for an award flight can vary greatly and will depend on many factors, including demand, availability, and seasonality. It’s essential to be flexible with travel plans to find the best possible redemption rates.

Since I take a couple of trips to Europe each year, I am never in a rush to get there, which results in the utmost flexibility in my travel plans. I already had a one-way ticket to visit New York for a couple of days in February 2025, so I began looking up award space on Virgin’s website from all of the New York City-area airports.

Within a few minutes, I found nonstop award space from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR), which could be booked for as little as 6,000 Flying Club points and $72 in taxes and fees one-way.

However, I was more so interested in experiencing Virgin Atlantic Upper Class, which I still have not flown. This specific redemption would allow me this experience and could be booked for just 29,000 points and $249 in taxes and fees for a one-way ticket.

Although the taxes and fees are relatively high, they are significantly less than in the past. Previously, a one-way transatlantic Upper Class award would cost nearly $1,000 in taxes and fees.

Unfortunately, the fees for the return flight were much higher at $607. However, the return flight could also be booked for the same 29,000-point rate.

Although the round-trip taxes and fees amount to more than $850, I find this to be a solid redemption as I use my points and miles to experience business and first class flights and luxury hotels. Compare that to paying over $3,000 for a round-trip, Virgin Atlantic Upper Class ticket.

Bottom Line:

With Virgin’s new award rates, it costs as little as 58,000 points to book a round-trip ticket between the U.S. and the U.K.

Stack With a Limited-Time 40% Transfer Bonus

However, it gets even better. There are often transfer bonuses with hotel and airline loyalty programs like Flying Club.

Through December 31, 2024, there is a 40% transfer bonus from American Express Membership Rewards to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club. So, instead of transferring 58,000 Amex Membership Rewards points to Virgin Atlantic, I transferred just 42,000 points.

For this redemption, I achieved a valuation of 5.9 cents per point — substantially higher than our estimated value of 1.4 cents for Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Points or 2.2 cents for Amex Membership Rewards points.

How To Earn Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Points

The easiest way to earn Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points is by transferring credit card points to the program.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club is a transfer partner of nearly every major transferable rewards currency, including American Express Membership RewardsChase Ultimate RewardsCapital One MilesMarriott BonvoyCiti ThankYou Rewards, and Bilt Rewards. (Capital One Miles and Bilt Rewards do not transfer directly to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club — you must first transfer your rewards to Virgin Red, which can then be transferred over to Flying Club.)

However, to take advantage of this Amex transfer bonus, you’ll want to move over points from your American Express cards. Popular options, like The Platinum Card® from American Express, The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, or the American Express® Gold Card, all come with generous welcome bonus offers.

Final Thoughts

Although the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program has undergone some significant changes, it’s not all bad news. There are still some ways to get excellent value with Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points.

With the new dynamic pricing system now in place, award pricing will vary significantly. However, if you can be flexible with your plans and travel during the off-season, you can fly to Europe in business class for far fewer points than you’d think.
