The Chase trifecta is a popular combination of rewards cards that can help you earn more points within the Ultimate Rewards program. It consists of 2 no-annual-fee cards and a premium Sapphire card.

The core strategy hasn’t changed, but the combined annual fees, benefits, and earning structures have. Plus, as other top card issuers now offer competitive card combinations, the question arises: Does the Chase trifecta still hold up in 2026?

Let’s find out.

How the Chase Trifecta Works

The Chase trifecta is relatively straightforward. The Chase Freedom Flex® and Chase Freedom Unlimited® earn rewards on everyday spending, generally worth 1 cent each when redeemed for cash-back or Chase Travel redemptions.

Pair either of the Freedom cards with a premium Chase Sapphire card — the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve®, or Sapphire Reserve for Business℠ — and you can combine your rewards while accessing more valuable redemption options, including Points Boost redemptions through Chase Travel and transfers to Chase’s airline and hotel partners.

Step 1: Choose Your Anchor Card

First, you’ll need to pick a Sapphire card. The main draw of the Chase Sapphire Preferred card is that it earns points well, offers excellent travel protections, and provides access to Chase transfer partners with a $95 annual fee.

Why We Like This Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card bonus categories include travel, dining, online grocery purchases (excluding Walmart, Target, and wholesale clubs), gas, EV charging, vacation home rentals with top brands, and streaming services.

It offers flexible point redemption options, no foreign transaction fees, and strong travel insurance coverage, including primary car rental insurance. If you travel a few times a year and spend on dining, the card is likely to be a good choice, but it’s hard to justify if you don’t dine out or travel often.

Bottom Line:

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card is a good fit for almost anyone, and its low annual fee makes it easy to justify as an option to round out the Chase Trifecta. If you want premium perks and benefits such as airport lounge access, opt for the Chase Sapphire Reserve card (or the Chase Sapphire Reserve Business card if you’re a business owner).

Step 2: Apply for the No-Annual-Fee Chase Cards

The Freedom Flex card and the Freedom Unlimited card round out the trifecta with rewards on everyday purchases with no annual fee.

With the Freedom Flex card, you can earn 5% cash-back up to $1,500 in purchases in quarterly rotating bonus categories (enrollment required), and the Freedom Unlimited card earns at least 1.5% cash-back on all purchases. Both cards earn 3% cash-back on purchases at drugstores, which isn’t one of the 3x categories on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card.

Either Freedom card can round out your Chase trifecta. Image Credit: Upgraded Points

These cards make your trifecta more effective because, regardless of which Sapphire card you choose as your anchor, you can earn more on nonbonus purchases with the Freedom Unlimited card, and the Freedom Flex card provides a quarterly bonus category that you can maximize for 5% cash-back.

Both cards allow you to earn significantly more points on everyday purchases than you otherwise would if you only had the Chase Sapphire Preferred card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve card.

How the Chase Trifecta Stacks Up Against the Competition

Other top card combinations come from Capital One and Citi.

With the Citi duo, you either pair the Citi Double Cash® Card with the Citi Strata Premier® Card or the Citi Strata Elite℠ Card. Similarly, with the Capital One duo, you pair the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit CardInformation collected independently. Not reviewed by Capital One. with either the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card or the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

Capital One and Citi offer compelling card combinations, and deciding which is best depends on your spending, benefits preferences, and how much you’re willing to pay in annual fees.

All 3 issuers offer a low-cost combination with combined annual fees of just $95, and all 3 have a premium combination with elevated perks such as airport lounge access.

The Capital One and Citi combinations offer a higher point-earning floor with cards that earn 2x rewards on all purchases, compared to 1.5x with the Chase trifecta.

However, the Chase trifecta with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card offers the opportunity to earn 3x points across 7 different categories, plus the quarterly 5x category from the Freedom Flex card. The Citi duo offers 6 different 3x categories, and the Capital One duo offers just 4 different 3x categories.

Bottom Line:

There is no “best” combination, but one might be better for you based on the type of purchases you tend to spend the most on, which reward ecosystem offers transfer partners you use the most, and whether that setup offers the perks and benefits you’re looking for.

Final Thoughts

The Chase trifecta remains one of the strongest card combinations available in 2026, with strong point earning, travel protections, and a useful rewards program. If you don’t need a premium card with airport lounge access, combining the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, Freedom Flex card, and Freedom Unlimited card will cost only $95 in fees.

If you’re new to points, don’t travel enough to make lounge access and a stack of conditional credits worthwhile, or simply don’t want cards with large annual fees, then the Chase Sapphire Preferred card is the best option. If you fly frequently, want built-in lounge access, and can make use of the dining and travel credits on the Chase Sapphire Reserve card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve Business card, the higher fee can more than pay for itself.
