Marriott has just announced the opening of its first City Express hotel in the United States. This Marriott property is located in Duluth, Georgia, and the hotel giant plans to open 4 more City Express locations in the U.S. and Canada later this year.

City Express by Marriott hotels are marketed as an affordable, midscale option. Midscale hotels are a fast-growing market, and this Marriott brand’s expansion will attract new customers and frugal travelers.

What Is City Express by Marriott?

City Express properties have existed as a successful brand in Latin American regions (CALA) and Caribbean since 2023. These moderately priced hotels are a popular choice for those looking for both convenience and value in their stay.

Marriott aims to provide efficient and economical amenities, offering all of the essentials: comfortable beds, complimentary breakfast, and high-speed internet. Each City Express by Marriott location provides a 24-hour market. Additional amenities include fitness facilities and pet-friendly policies for those traveling with animals.

Duluth, Georgia, holds the first City Express by Marriott property in the U.S. Other upcoming locations set to open in 2025 include New Orleans, Louisiana; Chicago, Illinois; Orlando, Florida; and Port Hope, Ontario, Canada.

Hot Tip:

Wondering what these hotels are like? Check out our review of the City Centro by Marriott Oaxaca in Mexico — just one of the numerous City Express properties participating in Marriott Bonvoy.

How To Book

There is only 1 City Express by Marriott hotel currently available for booking in the United States. To book a stay at City Express by Marriott in Duluth, Georgia, head to the hotel’s website.

Once on the website, select the preferred dates for your stay.

In this example, you can either pay $160 per night or 28,500 Marriott Bonvoy points for a 2-night stay — a price of 14,250 points per night.

We value Marriott Bonvoy points at 0.7 cents each. By using 14,250 points to book your stay for the above dates, you’re redeeming your points for 1.12 cents each. That’s above average, so this could be a good use of your points.

If you’re paying for a stay, you will receive reduced earnings when collecting points for your stay at City Express by Marriott hotels. Guests will earn 5x points per $1 spent and 1 elite night credit for every 2 nights per stay.

That’s half of what Marriott properties like Westin or Sheraton will get you, both of which earn 10x points per $1 spent and 1 elite night credit for every 1 night stayed.

Final Thoughts

There is no denying that demand for moderately priced hotels is on the rise. That said, it’s clear that Marriott Bonvoy members are missing out on an opportunity to earn rewards and elite night credits with this brand. Unfortunately, the significantly reduced earnings make these hotels a less desirable option for Marriott loyalists, compared to other Marriott properties, but the price may draw in those just looking for a good deal.
