Why Accessing Delta Sky Clubs on Arrival Is My Favorite Amex Platinum Perk

It’s no question that The Platinum Card® from American Express has the most far-reaching lounge access of any luxury card, even as new competitors emerge on the market. Since I pay for its $695 annual fee (rates & fees), it’s my dedicated travel card for accessing airport lounges.

I frequently fly with Delta and have come to appreciate the merits of the Amex Platinum card and its partnership with the airline even more. Although the Amex Platinum card used to allow for unlimited access to Delta Sky Clubs with a same-day Delta boarding pass, that perk is now capped at 10 visits per year.

While you can regain unlimited access by spending $75,000 annually on the card, the 10 annual visits are more than enough for my travel habits. I just have to be more intentional about when I use my visits, making sure I enter the Delta Sky Club before flights when I know I’ll truly appreciate the experience.

Even better, the Amex Platinum card also grants Delta Sky Club access upon arrival after a Delta flight, a lesser-known perk that adds significant value but isn’t advertised. Here’s what you need to know.

How To Access Delta Sky Clubs

There are several ways to gain access to Delta Sky Clubs. For instance, travelers flying on a Delta One ticket or an international Delta Premium Select ticket automatically qualify.

Alternatively, you can purchase an annual Sky Club membership for $695 or opt for the Executive Membership at $1,495, which includes access for up to 2 guests. However, the most logical option for most travelers is to apply for qualifying American Express cards.

The Amex Platinum card and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express include 10 annual visits to the Delta Sky Club, provided you have a same-day Delta boarding pass. It can be ticketed in any fare class except basic economy.

Delta SkyMiles Frequent Flyer Program

With any of these cards, you can unlock unlimited visits to the Delta Sky Club by spending at least $75,000 on the card annually.

What Counts Toward Annual Visits to the Delta Sky Club?

What counts as a “visit” to the Delta Sky Club is more generous than you may think.

A “visit” is an entry to one or more Delta Sky Clubs or usage of the Delta Sky Club “Grab and Go” feature, at one or more airports, for a period of up to 24 hours starting upon the first Delta Sky Club entry or Grab and Go usage.

-Delta

Here’s an example: If you’re flying from Boston (BOS) with a layover in New York (LGA) before arriving in Charlotte (CLT), you can access the Delta Sky Club in Boston before your first flight, again during your layover in LGA, and once more upon arrival in Charlotte. As long as all visits occur within 24 hours of your initial entry, it counts as a single visit under your eligible Amex card.

DeltaSkyClubLGAMainBarDetail
One of my favorite Delta Sky Clubs is at LGA’s Terminal C. Image Credit: Nick Ellis

Travelers with a connecting ticket likely already know they can access the Delta Sky Club during their layover. But even those on a nonstop domestic flight may not realize they’re eligible to use the lounge upon arrival and still have it count as 1 visit, thanks to how Delta’s “24-hour visit” policy works.

Remember that this tip only applies to domestic flights (not international ones), since you’ll no longer be airside after clearing customs and immigration upon arrival from an international trip.

Hot Tip:

Since arrival passengers may lose access to their boarding pass on their phones after landing, it’s a good idea to take a screenshot of the boarding card. If you have a paper boarding ticket, you can also show proof of your same-day flight.

Why You Should Visit a Delta Sky Club Upon Landing

There are many reasons why travelers may want to visit the Delta Sky Club after landing in their final destination. Whether you want to freshen up, grab a meal before heading into town, or enjoy a steaming cup of coffee, it’s a nice perk that many eligible Amex Platinum cardholders probably don’t realize they have.

Most recently, I stopped by the Delta Sky Club in San Francisco (SFO) after landing, since my flight arrived well before the 4 p.m. hotel check-in time. I figured it was the perfect opportunity to grab a proper (and complimentary) breakfast and catch up on a few emails before heading into the city. If you’ve ever flown into SFO, you know the ride into downtown is at least a 30-minute trek.

As an Amex Platinum cardholder, I also appreciate that I get access to the wide network of Amex Centurion Lounges. However, unlike the Delta Sky Clubs, those lounges don’t allow entry upon arrival. That makes this Delta perk extra special, especially for travelers looking to freshen up or work after landing.

Why the Amex Platinum Card Is Still the Best Lounge Access Card

The competition among premium credit cards has intensified recently, with more options than ever. Capital One and Chase have both expanded their airport lounge networks — Capital One Lounges and Chase Sapphire Lounges, respectively — but neither comes close to matching the scale and presence of Amex Centurion Lounges. Even if Amex were to stop opening new lounges altogether, it would still take years for the others to catch up.

For example, Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and Capital One Venture X Business CardInformation collected independently. Not reviewed by Capital One. holders get access to Capital One Lounges. Similarly, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Sapphire Reserve for Business℠ grant entry to Chase Sapphire Lounges.

Amex has the edge over all of these luxury card options because an Amex Platinum card or Amex Business Platinum card also gives you 10 annual visits to the Delta Sky Clubs — a benefit neither Chase nor Capital One can match.

Chase maintains a strong partnership with United but doesn’t offer United Club visits with its most premium cards, and Capital One doesn’t have a major domestic airline partnership at all, giving Amex a clear edge for frequent Delta flyers.

With 25+ Centurion lounges domestically and internationally and an additional 50+ Delta Sky Clubs, I stay loyal to my Amex Platinum card when I want lounge access. Delta is my go-to airline, making the perks even more valuable for my travel style.

Hot Tip: Apply and find out if you’re eligible for a welcome bonus offer of as high as 175,000 points with the Amex Platinum. Welcome offers may vary and you may not be eligible for an offer.

Final Thoughts

The best lounge access card for you will be a personal decision based on your home airport and which airline you fly the most. As a Delta flyer, I love that the Amex Platinum card (and the business version, the Amex Business Platinum card) gives the most airport lounge options.

Over time, I’ve realized that stopping by a Delta Sky Club after landing is an underrated perk, proving its worth when needed. Sure, no one wants to hang around the airport longer than necessary, but for frequent travelers, there are times when it just makes sense.
