Given that credit cards make up the majority of consumer spending, it is uncommon for debit cards to provide cardholders with worthwhile rewards. Despite this, American Express is providing a chance for new and existing cardholders of the American Express® Rewards Checking Debit Card to earn up to 3,000 Membership Rewards.

Let’s take a look at the details of this offer.

American Express® Rewards Checking Debit Card Promotion

Through July 31, new and existing cardholders of the American Express® Rewards Checking Debit Card will earn 4x Membership Rewards® points for every $2 spent on eligible debit card purchases, up to $1,500 in spend.

It’s a somewhat confusing structure, but if you can maximize the offer, you can earn up to 3,000 Amex Membership Rewards. We value these rewards at 2.2 cents per point, which is $66 in rewards back for your spending if you can max out the offer.

This is a large jump from the standard spending offer, which is 1 point for every $2 spent.

However, this account has the potential to offer more than just a simple spending opportunity. Here are the features included with the account:

  • 1% APY on your balance
  • No monthly fees
  • Large ATM network, including Allpoint and MoneyPass ATMs

The good thing about this account is that there are no costs to be concerned about—that is, there is no minimum deposit required, no minimum deposit fee, and no monthly fees.

Other Ways To Earn and Redeem Amex Points

If you want to earn a lot of American Express points, Amex has a number of excellent rewards cards with varied annual fees and spending categories that should fit your lifestyle and needs.

For example, The Platinum Card® from American Express earns 5x points per dollar on flights purchased directly with airlines and flights and prepaid hotels purchased through AmexTravel.com (up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year). The Amex Platinum card also comes with a variety of benefits, including access to over 1,300 airport lounges, complimentary Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status (upon enrollment), and more.

Another valuable card is the American Express® Gold Card. This card earns 4x points per dollar at global restaurants (up to $50,000 per calendar year, then 1x after that) and at U.S. supermarkets on up to $25,000 spent per calendar year (1x thereafter). You’ll also earn 3x points on airfare booked directly with the airline or through AmexTravel.com.

You can also redeem Membership Rewards in a variety of ways, including on merchandise, statement credits on purchases made on American Express cards, and, without a doubt, the most valuable way: transferring points to airline and hotel transfer partners

Hot Tip:

The benefit of having American Express Membership Rewards points is that you don’t need a significant amount to redeem for travel experiences. Check out our guide on The Best Ways to Use 10,000 (or Fewer) American Express Membership Rewards.

Final Thoughts

This American Express® Rewards Checking Debit Card bonus is an excellent way to increase your Membership Rewards points balance. If you’re already a debit cardholder, this offer could be of interest to you. However, if you’re considering becoming one, you may want to do so only if you’re looking to permanently switch banks, as this offer may not be as enticing in the short-term.
