Flix North America, the parent company of FlixBus and Greyhound, has announced an expansion of routes that will connect major cities and university hubs across the Midwest and South.

FlixBus will add 3 new routes over the next 2 weeks, providing affordable and convenient options for students and travelers just in time for spring break.

With bus ridership increasing, especially during the holidays, having more options is always welcome.

Let’s take a look at the details.

FlixBus Adds New Routes Across the Midwest and South

FlixBus will be adding 3 new routes catering to budget-conscious and student travelers in major cities and college towns.

Travelers looking for affordable intercity bus transportation have some new alternatives to driving or flying starting this month.

Reliable, affordable, and flexible travel options are more important than ever, and we are making it easier for students, commuters, and budget-conscious travelers to stay connected. With these new routes, we’re expanding connections between key university towns, major urban centers, and regional transit hubs, giving travelers more choices beyond flying or driving. Whether it’s a student heading home for the weekend, a commuter traveling between cities, or a leisure traveler exploring a new destination, FlixBus is making long-distance travel more accessible, sustainable, and stress-free.

St. Louis – Nashville – Atlanta

Starting March 13, 2025, FlixBus will add a new express service in partnership with St. Louis-based Vandalia Bus Lines between the cities that see the most FlixBus demand: St. Louis, Nashville, and Atlanta.

This new intercity service will operate 6 to 7 schedules each week and connect students at popular universities, including Vanderbilt University, Southern Illinois University, and Georgia State University.

Cincinnati – Indianapolis – Chicago – Madison

Also starting March 13, 2025, FlixBus will add Cincinnati to its network for the first time. This new express route will connect Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin and reduce current travel time from 16 to 9 hours, when compared to traditional options.

This new line will operate 6 to 7 schedules each week and will be ideal for students at the University of Cincinnati and the University of Wisconsin-Madison visiting family on weekends or school breaks.

New York – Chicago

Starting March 19, 2025, the nation’s largest and third-largest cities — New York City and Chicago — will be connected by FlixBus’ affordable, comfortable travel options.

The route will start with 5 to 7 schedules per week and will begin running daily as of April 14.

The new route will be operated in partnership with New Jersey-based Eagle Bus Lines and will service major college towns and cities along the way, including State College, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Dayton, and Indianapolis.

Budget-Friendly Transportation

While certainly not the fastest mode of transportation, bus travel can be a great way to reach popular destinations without breaking your budget.

College students and any budget-conscious traveler should certainly consider bus travel, as long as speed isn’t the main priority.

A quick search for a Southwest Airlines flight and a bus between Nashville and Atlanta yields similar prices, but the bus takes about 3 hours longer.

However, we all know that just getting to and from the airport and dealing with security can easily add hours to a journey.

In this scenario, the bus would save you $10 and pick you up and drop you off in the middle of the city, and the total travel time may not be that different.

However, on longer journeys, like New York to Chicago, you will need to decide if riding a bus for 20+ hours will be worth the money saved. Booking a flight with points and miles may be the better option.

Final Thoughts

FlixBus is expanding with 3 new routes that will connect major cities and university hubs. College students and budget-conscious travelers will soon have some more options when booking their travel between these popular destinations.
