Frontier Airlines has launched a new feature designed to help travelers who experience unexpected disruptions to their journeys, saying it’s an “industry-first product.”

The so-called “Disruption Assistance for Any Reason” service will help travelers evaluate the options available should something go wrong with their trip, adding a dose of flexibility for flyers.

“This offering reflects our continued commitment to building The New Frontier—where travelers have more control, greater transparency, and added confidence every step of the way,” said Bobby Schroeter, chief commercial officer at Frontier Airlines. “By providing smarter, faster solutions when plans change, we’re making flying easier and more customer-centric than ever before.”

Let’s take a look at the details.

Frontier’s New Disruption Assistance for Any Reason Service

The result of a partnership with HTS, the B2B division of travel platform Hopper, Frontier’s Disruption Assistance for Any Reason service leverages the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to provide passengers with options should something go wrong with their flights.

Frontier says that the new service — available at an additional charge — will provide “instant, automated solutions” to passengers who experience an eligible mishap. The airline says these are usually delays of 2 or more hours or same-day cancellations.

If a passenger elects to purchase Disruption Assistance for Any Reason protection, they’ll receive notifications of travel delays or cancellations and a list of options they can choose from, including a different flight on any airline or a full refund if they choose to stay with Frontier.

Currently, the service is only available for purchase on Frontier’s website, but the airline says functionality is coming soon to its mobile app (iOS, Android).

You’ll find an option to purchase toward the end of the booking process. We did a few random flight searches to get an idea of pricing, and discovered that it varies by flight.

For example, I was quoted $10 to add Disruption Assistance for Any Reason to a flight between Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and Boston (BOS).

However, the cost of adding it to a flight between New York (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX) was quoted at $19.

Frontier’s Disruption Assistance for Any Reason service seems like a pretty good value, especially when you consider the nature of the low-cost carrier. Frontier doesn’t operate a typical hub-and-spoke model like the legacy airlines do, meaning you have fewer options for keeping your journey intact should something go wrong. That’s because you don’t have the volume of flights and availability of hubs on your side.

And, if you’re departing from an airport with plenty of other carriers and flights, such as Chicago, the ability to be rebooked on another carrier is a great option to have. It’s likely another airline will offer an itinerary to your intended destination. Note that there is a maximum amount allowed for rebookings on other airlines, and it varies based on the flight you’ve booked initially.

Further, paying a relatively small amount of money to have the option of a full refund is a great way to mitigate potential money lost.

Final Thoughts

Disruption Assistance for Any Reason by Frontier is an interesting and potentially very helpful option for flyers. For a relatively small amount of money, they can now give themselves peace of mind and automatic options should anything go awry with their trip.
