You may be familiar with Global Entry’s enrollment on arrival option, which allows you to complete the required interview when you arrive at eligible U.S. airports after an international flight.

Now, you can do the same when departing from 2 U.S. airports, avoiding the requirement to snag a hard-to-find interview time after you’re conditionally approved for Global Entry.

Let’s take a look at how this program works and the available hours for these interviews in Miami and Washington, D.C.

What Is Global Entry ‘Enrollment on Departure?’

After applying for Global Entry, travelers will need to schedule an interview after being “conditionally approved.” And that’s the problem, as interview time slots can be very difficult to find. Waiting lists can be months long.

To compensate, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol started offering Enrollment on Arrival. Through this program, passengers who were conditionally approved could complete their interviews on arrival — without needing an appointment — at select U.S. airports when returning from an international destination.

Now, 2 airports are offering Enrollment on Departure, which allows you to complete an interview before your outgoing flight. You’ll need conditional approval, but you won’t need an appointment slot.

How To Use Global Entry Enrollment on Departure

Participating airports in this new program include Washington Dulles (IAD), which has been offering predeparture interviews since 2024, and now Miami (MIA). To use this feature, you don’t need an appointment but must have a departing flight from either of these airports. Luckily, those with domestic and international flights are eligible.

You’ll also need to bring your passport, proof of where you live, and a permanent resident card, if applicable. The CBP says you should notify the interviewing CBP officer immediately if you need reasonable modifications, auxiliary aids, or services due to a disability. If such modifications are unavailable, your interview may be scheduled for a later date at an alternate location.

Current participating airports and their hours are as follows:

Final Thoughts

If you’re flying out of Washington Dulles or Miami and are conditionally approved for Global Entry, using Enrollment on Departure could save the headache of scouring for hard-to-find interview appointments. It’s also great that this option is available for those with domestic flights, as Enrollment on Arrival requires you to fly into the U.S. on an international flight — though it’s also available at more airports than Enrollment on Departure.

Though it’s only available at 2 airports so far, this is a useful tool for those who are conditionally approved for Global Entry. Ensure you arrive at the airport with sufficient time before your flight. It’s hard to predict how long you might wait in line before your turn for an interview.
