Hyatt and American Airlines are winding down their loyalty partnership, with November 15 marking the last day to link accounts and preserve access to certain reciprocal benefits.

As a World of Hyatt Globalist, I benefited from the partnership last year when I reached 70 qualifying nights and selected an AAdvantage Gold status benefit as a Milestone Reward. For someone who flies American frequently but doesn’t earn elite status the traditional way, it was a pretty nice perk.

But the relationship worked both ways. American Airlines elite members also had opportunities to earn Hyatt benefits, making the partnership especially useful for travelers loyal to either program.

With those opportunities disappearing, I wanted to take a closer look at Hyatt’s 2 credit cards and whether they offer a worthwhile alternative for American flyers who still want to enjoy Hyatt elite benefits.

Let’s see whether either card makes sense for your travel habits.

What Changes for American Airlines Elite Members?

For American Airlines loyalists, the partnership offered a pretty easy way to enjoy Hyatt benefits without necessarily spending a single night at a Hyatt hotel.

Through American’s Loyalty Point Rewards, members who earned 100,000 Loyalty Points could unlock World of Hyatt Discoverist status, while those reaching 175,000 or 250,000 Loyalty Points could choose Explorist status. And for those earning even more Loyalty Points, there were opportunities to select Hyatt Category 1-4 or Category 1-7 free night awards.

The good news is that these benefits aren’t disappearing overnight. Members who link their American and Hyatt accounts by November 15, 2026, can still earn eligible Hyatt rewards through February 28, 2027, and select them through March 31, 2027.

But once those opportunities end, earning Loyalty Points alone won’t get you Hyatt status or free night awards anymore. That’s where Hyatt’s credit cards come in.

Both cards offer automatic Discoverist status and let you earn qualifying nights toward Explorist or even top-tier Globalist through spending. They’re not an exact replacement for the partnership, but if you’ve enjoyed Hyatt benefits through your American Airlines status, they’re worth a closer look.

Hyatt’s 2 Credit Cards Offer Different Paths to Status

If you’ve been using your American Airlines elite status to get a taste of World of Hyatt, the end of the partnership doesn’t necessarily mean you have to give up on Hyatt status. In fact, Hyatt has 2 co-branded Chase credit cards that could be worth considering, particularly if you want to enjoy hotel benefits without having to earn status entirely through stays.

Both cards come with automatic World of Hyatt Discoverist status. It’s Hyatt’s entry-level elite tier, so don’t expect complimentary breakfast or suite upgrades, but you can enjoy perks like preferred rooms when available and 2 p.m. late checkout at participating properties.

Where the cards differ is how quickly they can help you earn elite status.

The World of Hyatt Credit Card gives you 5 qualifying nights every year, plus 2 more for every $5,000 spent. Whereas the World of Hyatt Business Credit Card doesn’t offer those automatic nights, you’ll earn 5 qualifying nights for every $10,000 spent. And if you’re interested in getting a higher elite status like top-tier Globalist, both cards let you earn qualifying nights through spending, which can get you there.

Here’s how they compare.

Can You Earn Hyatt Globalist Without Staying at a Hyatt?

One of the biggest perks of the American-Hyatt partnership was the ability to earn Hyatt Discoverist or Explorist status through earning Loyalty Points. Top-tier Globalist, however, was reserved for American Airlines’ exclusive ConciergeKey members.

But here’s something worth knowing: With either Hyatt credit card, you can actually earn top-tier Globalist without spending a single night at a Hyatt.

Spending on my World of Hyatt card helps me earn Globalist status and Suite Upgrade Awards for stays like this at the Park Hyatt Tokyo. Image Credit: Juan Ruiz

Globalist requires 60 qualifying nights or 100,000 base points in a calendar year. As someone who’s held the status for years, I can tell you that perks like complimentary breakfast, suite upgrades when available, and 4 p.m. late checkout can make a huge difference, especially when traveling with family.

Here’s what it would take to earn Globalist entirely through credit card spending:

  • World of Hyatt card: $140,000 in spending earns 56 qualifying nights, plus the 5 automatic nights you receive annually.
  • World of Hyatt Business card: $120,000 in spending earns 60 qualifying nights.

Those are hefty spending requirements, and I wouldn’t recommend chasing status solely through spending. But remember, you can combine qualifying nights from actual Hyatt stays with those earned through your card, making Globalist much more attainable if you’re already a frequent Hyatt guest.

Hot Tip:

You don’t have to earn all 60 qualifying nights through credit card spending. You can combine nights earned from Hyatt stays with those earned through your card. Plus, qualifying nights from card spending also count toward Hyatt Milestone Rewards.

Are Hyatt’s Credit Cards Worth It for AA Loyalists?

I love Hyatt and have gotten plenty of value from its loyalty program, but I wouldn’t recommend its credit cards to AA loyalists who rarely stay at Hyatt hotels.

If Hyatt is already your go-to hotel brand, though, there’s a strong case for either card. The personal card’s $95 annual fee can easily be offset by its annual Category 1-4 free night certificate, while the business card can help big spenders earn elite status faster.

Personally, I earn roughly 40 of the 60 qualifying nights needed for Globalist each year through spending on my World of Hyatt card. And with the American Airlines partnership ending, that strategy isn’t changing.

For me, Hyatt Globalist is worth pursuing on its own. The AA partnership was always a nice bonus, not the reason I chased status.

Final Thoughts

It’s a shame to see the Hyatt-American Airlines partnership come to an end, especially for travelers who’ve gotten real value from the reciprocal benefits, as I have.

But if you’re an AA loyalist who still wants Hyatt elite status, the 2 co-branded credit cards offer another way to get there without relying entirely on hotel stays.

Neither card is a direct replacement for the partnership, and I wouldn’t go out of my way to chase Hyatt status if I rarely stayed at its hotels. But if Hyatt is already part of your travel plans, either card could be worth considering.
