IHG One Rewards and Qatar Airways Privilege Club have launched a new partnership that will allow members of the airline’s loyalty program to earn Avios for stays at IHG properties worldwide.

Additionally, there’s new functionality that allows for point transfers from IHG One Rewards to Qatar Privilege Club.

Let’s take a look at the details!

New IHG and Qatar Partnership — The Details

IHG One Rewards has partnered with Qatar Airways Privilege Club to offer members the opportunity to earn Avios on IHG stays, in addition to new point-transfer functionality from IHG One Rewards to Qatar Airways Avios.

Members of each program can now earn 2 Avios per $1 spent on IHG stays and enable the automatic conversion of their points into miles. You need to enable this automatic conversion after each stay and ensure that Qatar Airways is selected as a preferred partner within your IHG One Rewards account.

Note, however, that not all IHG brands are eligible to earn 2 Avios per $1 spent. Staybridge Suites, Candlewood Suites, IHG Residences, and IHG Army Hotels will only earn 1 Avios per $1 spent.

Also, members can now transfer 10,000 IHG One Rewards points to Qatar Airways Privilege Club and receive 2,000 Avios. This represents a 5:1 ratio, but it seems 10,000 points is the minimum amount that can be transferred. Note, too, that you must contact an IHG One Rewards Service Center to initiate the transfer. The resulting Avios will be deposited in “up to 6 weeks.”

Other Ways To Earn Avios

Based on the terms of this partnership, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to earn Avios from IHG stays, as your rate will be far stronger if you choose to earn IHG One Rewards points from your stays instead.

Fortunately, though, there are plenty of easy ways to earn Avios. British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, and Qatar Airways all use Avios as their rewards currency, and rewards are instantly interchangeable between all of the programs.

Even better, the Qatar Airways Privilege Club maintains transfer partnerships with American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Capital One miles, Citi ThankYou Rewards, Marriott Bonvoy, and Rove Miles. Alternatively, those with Chase Ultimate Rewards or Wells Fargo Rewards can transfer those to British Airways and then instantly move their Avios to Qatar Airways Privilege Club.

Final Thoughts

IHG and Qatar Airways have launched a new partnership allowing members to earn Avios for IHG stays, in addition to the ability to transfer IHG One Rewards points to Qatar Airways. Qatar joins its peers — British Airways, Finnair, and Iberia — in having partnerships with IHG, but there are likely better ways to earn Avios. Regardless, it’s nice to have this ability, as we always enjoy new options for earning points. You never know when this option might be useful in a pinch.
