Some big news from Marriott Bonvoy today: The hotel giant becomes the latest chain to jump into the outdoor lodging segment with key acquisitions and partnerships with 2 major brands.

Here’s what you need to know.

Marriott Expands To Outdoor Lodging

Marriott Bonvoy announced on December 12 that it had acquired Postcard Cabins (formerly known as Getaway Outposts) and entered into a long-term agreement with Trailborn.

Postcard Cabins is composed of more than 2 dozen properties with over 1,200 cabins across the United States. The brand will operate under a long-term agreement with Marriott Bonvoy and will integrate into the program next year.

Postcard Cabins is known for its tiny cabins set in picturesque destinations near major cities, such as the Catskills. Each cabin includes a bed, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a campfire for a high-end glamping experience.

Marriott Hotels also announced a long-term agreement with Trailborn, the outdoor hospitality brand. The agreement will see 550+ rooms in 5 outdoor destinations come under the Marriott Bonvoy umbrella. Several other projects are currently in development in California and North Carolina.

Unlike Postcard Cabins, Trailborn is a full-service hotel chain and will likely appeal to guests who want more amenities while being among nature. You’ll also be able to earn and redeem Marriott Bonvoy points at Trailborn properties when the chain joins the program.

More Hotels Getting Into Outdoor Travel Segment

These moves come as Marriott says it plans to expand its offerings in the outdoor travel segment. Outdoor travel, while always popular, gained steam during the COVID-19 pandemic when travelers wanted to get out of the house but not be around throngs of tourists.

But Marriott isn’t the only major hotel chain doing this.

Earlier this year, Hilton announced a partnership with AutoCamp, a travel company offering niche boutique experiences in hybrid hotel and camping destinations across the U.S. And thanks to a new partnership, several Under Canvas and ULUM properties are available through Mr & Mrs Smith, which can be booked with World of Hyatt points. High-end luxury brands like Aman also offer accommodations among nature, albeit at an astronomical price.

Final Thoughts

Marriott is the latest hotel chain to invest in outdoor travel, which is fantastic news for travelers who will be able to earn and redeem points in non-traditional lodging options. We hope more hotels follow suit in the near future.
