2025 is the year that the U.S. got more connected to the rest of the world than ever, and the trend is set to continue in 2026.

It was a record-breaking year for the number of new and unique destinations made accessible by a nonstop flight from the U.S. From Nuuk (GOH) in Greenland to Catania (CTA) on the island of Sicily, it was an exciting year for sure.

However, there are still some interesting new destinations scheduled to start in 2026. The driving force behind these quirky new additions is mainly 2-fold. Until now, airlines would’ve lost money operating some of these routes, because the demand wouldn’t have been enough to fill the large planes capable of flying these distances. However, with the arrival of narrow-body aircraft that can fly longer distances, such as Boeing’s MAX range and the long-range variants of the Airbus A321, suddenly these destinations become easier to reach.

Additionally, the “Big 3” airlines in the U.S. are constantly competing for passengers, so being the only airline to fly to these new destinations will likely mean an uptick in passengers, plus more connecting traffic from around the U.S.

For now, each of the 6 new routes I’ll cover are seasonal, but there’s always a possibility of going year-round if they prove successful.

Glasgow, Scotland — United Airlines

Route: Newark (EWR) to Glasgow (GLA)
Aircraft: Boeing 737 MAX 8
Dates: Daily from May 8 until September 22, 2026

First on my list is Glasgow, Scotland — not because it’s my favorite but because it came first alphabetically…

I’m really curious to know what made United pick Glasgow to send its Boeing 737 MAX 8 after ending its previous service back in 2019. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with Glasgow but because United already operates a daily flight to Edinburgh (EDI) — also from Newark. Edinburgh Airport is only 47 miles from Glasgow and is without a doubt the city (out of these 2 options) most Americans would likely visit for a vacation.

I know that some New York-based movies are being shot in Glasgow nowadays, thanks to an architectural likeness to some of Manhattan’s older areas, including Greenwich Village and Chelsea. However, I doubt there’s enough film-crew demand for a daily flight.

Even if you want to visit Glasgow, the 737 MAX that United will send here doesn’t have lie-flat seats, so business-class passengers will prefer to fly to Edinburgh anyway. The highest cabin class United offers to Glasgow is premium economy.

My gut says this will be a 1-season-only trip, but there are some firm believers that it will be a success:

“The reintroduction of a direct, daily seasonal service between two of the world’s most dynamic destinations will bring considerable cultural and tourism benefits, as well as connect businesses across the west of Scotland with one of the world’s largest economies,” said Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council.

Olbia, Sardinia, Italy — Delta Air Lines

Route: New York City (JFK) to Olbia (OLB)
Aircraft: Boeing 767
Dates: 4x weekly from May 20 until October 23, 2026

Sardinia isn’t the easiest place to get to, unless you live in Italy or are happy to fly low-cost from elsewhere in Europe. New York will only be Olbia’s second international destination outside of Europe after Dubai (DXB). That will all change on May 20 when Delta‘s nonstop flight from the U.S. takes off for the first time.

The island is home to everything you could need for an incredible Italian getaway. It’s got the food, the beaches, ancient architecture, and oodles of culture. The best thing is that it doesn’t tend to attract the sort of fast-paced, whistle-stop tourism that other destinations in Italy do.

For an even more authentic, off-the-beaten-track experience, you can catch a boat from Northern Sardinia to the nearby French island of Corsica.

It remains to be seen whether Delta will manage to fill all the seats of a Boeing 767 4 times weekly to a place that many Americans might not have heard of previously.

Santiago de Compostela, Spain — United Airlines

Route: Newark (EWR) to Santiago de Compostela (SCQ)
Aircraft: Boeing 737 MAX 8
Dates: 3x weekly from May 27 until September 20, 2026

This small Spanish city is so remote that I thought it was in a different part of the country entirely. Silly me for forgetting it’s the finish line of the Camino de Santiago — one of the world’s most famous pilgrimages.

I know Spain pretty well, but I still wouldn’t have pinpointed Santiago as being in the heart of Galicia. It’s a secluded, autonomous region in the northwestern corner of Spain that shares a border with Portugal.

Thanks to its prominent culture, cuisine, and even its own language, taking a trip to Galicia almost feels like you’re not even in Spain.

The city is also a great jumping off point for exploring more of Spain’s rugged northern coast.

As travelers look to spread their wings further than just Barcleona, Madrid, or the Balearic Islands, Santiago de Compestela could prove a very popular destination for United.

Split, Croatia — United Airlines

Route: Newark (EWR) to Split (SPU)
Aircraft: Boeing 767
Dates: 3x weekly from April 30 until September 6, 2026

United has hit the bullseye by choosing Split (SPU). While it still attracts tourists, it’s nowhere near as overcrowded as Dubrovnik.

It’s a relatively small city without much to see or do, but the city itself is not generally why people come to Split. Rather, its busy port means it acts as more of a jumping off point for those looking to escape to the many nearby paradisiacal islands like Brač, Hvar, and Vis.

As these islands don’t have an airport, so getting there is longer and complicated, they don’t feel overwhelmed like some other Mediterranean islands get, especially in Greece.

Thanks to the route’s relatively early launch at the end of April, Delta putting Split on the map from New York could be the perfect excuse to escape to somewhere different in Europe before the peak summer travel season.

Hot Tip:

We recently said 3 Croatian cities should be at the top of your travel list, and Split was one of them. Check out why we think so.

Tirana, Albania — Air Transat

Route: Toronto (YYZ) to Tirana (TIA)
Aircraft: Airbus A330
Dates: 1x weekly from June 18 until October 8, 2026

Even though this is a flight from Canada and not the U.S, this route deserves an honorary mention, as it’s the only nonstop service from North America to Albania.

There’s good reason to celebrate, too. Tirana, the country’s capital, is an interesting place to spend a night or 2, but it’s the country’s coastline where you’ll want to spend more than just a few days. the sparsely populated and less-frequented coastline spans from the bottom of the Dalmatian Coast in Montenegro down to Greece.

If Albania is a destination you’d consider, there are many ways to fly to Canada with points and miles, putting you in the right spot for this Air Transat flight.

Valetta, Malta — Delta Air Lines

Route: New York (JFK) to Valetta, Malta (VLA)
Aircraft: Boeing 767
Dates: 3x weekly from June 7 until October 23, 2026

Malta is a destination truly worth getting excited about. Its narrow streets, wild coastline, baroque style architecture, and fascinating language had me enchanted by the tiny island during my only visit back in 2019.

All that, plus its mixture of Arabic and Mediterranean cultures, makes Malta one of Europe’s most unique countries. Game of Thrones fans can also enjoy taking in some locations where it was filmed on the island, such as Mdina.

Unlike some of the other destinations in this roundup, Delta isn’t the only intercontinental airline flying to the island. Malta has attracted the big guns with the likes of Emirates and Qatar, which operate year-round flights to the nation with a population of around just half a million people.

If I had to put money on it, I’d say this would be the route most likely to come back for another season.

Final Thoughts

Thanks to Air Transat, Delta, and United, 2026 can be the year you discover somewhere completely new — maybe even a place you’ve never heard of before.

Due to fluxuations in demand and the ever-changing nature of airline schedules, seasonal services like these come and go in the blink of an eye. As such, if Albania, Croatia, Malta, Sardinia, Galicia, or even Glasgow, are on your list, the best time to book is probably now. There are nonstop flights from the U.S.

I have a feeling there’ll be even more exciting new destinations announced in the new year, too, so we’ll be keeping an eager eye on the news.
