Ahead of Memorial Day, Spirit Airlines is taking the time to thank military members with new benefits when flying with their dependents.

Here’s what you need to know.

Spirit Offers Benefits to Military Spouses and Children

Spirit Airlines announced today that it would extend active-duty U.S. military member benefits to their spouses and children when traveling together. Here’s a look at benefits family members can enjoy:

  • 2 free standard checked bags
  • 1 free standard carry-on bag (plus the existing 1 free personal item per person)
  • Complimentary priority boarding for active-duty service members and their spouses and children when traveling with the service member

“We applaud and appreciate our military families who make sacrifices every day to support their loved ones who are in service to our country, and we’re happy to extend our gratitude to them with new inclusion in our military benefits,” said Matt Klein, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Spirit Airlines.

While most U.S. carriers already offer military benefits to service members and their eligible dependents, this is a substantial move from Spirit, as the ultra-low-cost airline normally charges steep fees for checked bags and even carry-ons. This change will likely be well-received by military members’ dependents, enabling them to save money when traveling.

For instance, Allegiant Air generously offers this benefit to U.S. active-duty military personnel, retired military veterans, members of the National Guard, military reserve, and their dependents. Allegiant benefits include 2 checked bags, 1 carry-on, and 1 personal bag for members of the military and their families when traveling on the same itinerary. Finally, active-duty and reserve military members are exempt from change or cancellation fees due to changes in orders.

Gregory C. Anderson, Allegiant president, said the airline was “deeply committed” to providing military members and their families with “exceptional benefits.”

“Allegiant celebrates the selfless sacrifices made by our troops and veterans. In the face of unimaginable challenges, their dedication, courage, and resilience are the ultimate testament of service,” he said.

Final Thoughts

Spirit is making it easier for military members to travel with loved ones by expanding benefits when flying. With the new perks, families can get to their destinations without incurring ancillary fees.
