According to a lease agreement with Denver City Council, United has filed plans to construct a “Club Lite” lounge concept at Denver International Airport (DEN) between gates B61 and B63 in Concourse B East. At just over 1,500 square feet, the lounge would take up as much space as a small apartment.
What Can We Expect in the New Lounge Space?
Based on the size of the lounge, there likely won’t be restrooms inside, though there will be a few amenities likely in store:
- Agent assistance, especially valuable during irregular operations or severe weather
- Small seating areas — while this won’t necessarily be a great place to lounge or work from, this more than likely is intended to be an area for someone to wait while their companion speaks with an agent or grabs a refreshment
- A grab-and-go food and beverage selection, likely including packaged snacks, sandwiches, salads, and beverages
While the Club Lite lounge rendering indicates that it won’t be as big as a traditional United Club, it looks to offer more to-go-like services and amenities. Why a “Lite” Concept?
Airport lounges take up a lot of room — a traditional lounge needs a large amount of space, room for restrooms, long buffet lines, bars, and other amenities. In areas where there may not be room for a full-service lounge, United can offer a smaller grab-and-go concept, where passengers can quickly take food and drink to-go, especially great for people on tight connections.
This concept would be the first lite-style lounge for a U.S.-based airline, though it certainly isn’t the first in the world. Capital One operates a takeaway section in its new Dallas-based lounge, and Air Canada offers an Air Canada Café concept in Toronto.
Final Thoughts
According to lease amendment contract adopted by the City and County of Denver and United Airlines, United is likely building a Club Lite lounge concept at Denver International Airport, the first of its kind for an American airline. While we don’t know the full details, the space will be compact and is expected to offer limited, to-go-like amenities catered to travelers on the move, certainly enhancing the United Club membership package.
