Update: On April 16, 2018 Marriott made big announcements on the upcoming combined program for Marriott, SPG, and Ritz-Carlton. The programs will combine on August 1, 2018. Between then and February 2019 there will be interim opportunities to earn points, redeem points, and new and changed credit cards from American Express and Chase. From February 2019 the program will be in full effect. See our Complete Guide to SPG, Marriott, and Ritz-Carlton Changes for analysis of the changes and the latest on upcoming announcements, such as where hotels will be on the new award charts.

The Starwood Preferred Guest program might be a hotel loyalty program, but it offers much more than just hotel award stays. With over 30 airline transfer partners, SPG Starpoints are among the most valuable points on the market.

With several ways to earn SPG Starpoints and even more ways to redeem Starpoints for both award flights and award stays, understanding the SPG program is a must!

In this article, we’ll lay out all of SPG’s airline transfer partners, discuss how to transfer SPG Starpoints to airlines, and even address the opportunities provided by their merger with Marriott.

SPG Airline Transfer Partners

Of all the transferable points programs, SPG easily provides the most airline transfer partners. You can transfer Starpoints to most of these partners at a 1:1 ratio, but some transfer at a much worse rate – so be aware of that before submitting a transfer!

Hot Tip: Use our transfer partner tool to see how many points you’ll get when you transfer your SPG Starpoints to partner airlines and hotels!

Transfer Starpoints to Marriott or Ritz-Carlton

When Marriott acquired the Starwood chain of hotels, they created some interesting redemption opportunities. SPG Starpoints can be transferred to your Marriott Rewards (or Ritz-Carlton Rewards) account at a 1:3 ratio.

Just to be clear, 1 SPG Starpoint will convert to 3 Marriott Rewards points. These transfers complete almost instantly, so if you find a Marriott where you are traveling, it’s possible to book quickly using a points transfer.

Unlike transfers from Chase Ultimate Rewards to Marriott Rewards, transfers from SPG Starpoints can be a great use of your hard-earned points.

How To Transfer Starpoints to Airline Partners

Once you’ve earned enough Starpoints and found the award flight you want, it’s time to transfer your points to the appropriate airline loyalty program.

All transfers can be completed online by following a few simple steps. Follow the steps below and you’ll be on your way to booking your next adventure.

Step 1: Log in to your SPG account. Under the “Book and Redeem” menu options select “Redeem Starpoints.”

Transfers to Marriott or Ritz-Carlton are quick and easy.

Here are the steps:

Step 1: Log in to your account

Step 2: Under “Book and Redeem,” select “Redeem Starpoints”

Step 3: Select “More Options”

Step 5: Enter your Marriott (or Ritz-Carlton) account number and the number of Starpoints you’d like to transfer. Complete the transfer.

Step 6: Book your award stay with Marriott or Ritz-Carlton.

Book With SPG Flights

SPG Flights
While not generally a good use of points, you can cash in SPG Starpoints to purchase a flight rather than transfer them to an airline to book an award flight.
SPG Flights Tiers
As you can see, the most value you can get out of your Starpoints with SPG Flights is 1.5 cents per point.

SPG will also allow you to book what amounts to a paid flight with your SPG Starpoints. Let’s be clear right from the top: this is rarely a good way to use your Starpoints. Similar to an award chart, they have redemptions based on pricing tiers.

These are not award flights; these flights are cash tickets purchased when you use points, so they earn miles and status credit like a normal cash fare. However, the highest value for your points with SPG Flights is a flight that costs exactly $150.

Should You Transfer or Book Through SPG Flights?

SPG Starpoints are too valuable, in our opinion, to be used with SPG Flights. While a cheap economy flight might make sense in rare cases, there are just too many better ways to use Starpoints.

SPG Moments

The SPG Moments program allows you to use points to book exclusive experiences such as sporting events, the World Series, a Formula 1 race, culinary experiences, concerts, and more. Each package is sold via auction and indicates the time and date when bidding ends, as well as how many tickets the winning bidder receives.

Other Ways To Use Points

While not a great use of points, SPG does have several gift card partners including iTunes, Banana Republic, and Amazon. Generally, you will only get a value of 1 cent per point when redeeming for gift cards, instead of the 2-5 cents (or more) per point when redeeming for travel.

Combining Starpoints From Different Accounts

If you need more Starpoints to book an award stay at a Starwood property, transfer to an airline, or transfer to Marriott to book an award, your significant other can deposit points to your SPG account.

Unlike many airlines and hotel chains, the SPG program does not charge you to complete these transfers.

The one limiting factor is that you can only have 30,000 SPG Starpoints transferred to your account per calendar year.

Earning SPG Starpoints

American Express offers 2 co-branded SPG credit cards: a personal and a business version. These cards are by far the easiest way to earn SPG Starpoints.

Redeeming Starpoints

Whether you’re traveling in Asia or Europe, Starpoints can provide amazing value when redeemed for Starwood hotel stays or transferred to book an award stay at a Marriott property.

With so many airline partners, you’ll never lack for transfer options…and that might not even be the best part of transferring Starpoints to airlines! For every chunk of 20,000 SPG points you transfer, you will receive a bonus of 5,000 miles with the designated airline.

One important caveat to keep in mind is that you can only transfer up to 79,999 points per 24 hours. But if you transfer the maximum 79,999 points, you will be 1 point short of earning the full transfer bonus on each 20,000-point chunk!

If you are trying to maximize the value of your points and get the 5,000-mile bonus on each chunk of 20,000 points you transfer, you’ll want to limit your transfers to 60,000 points per 24-hour period.

It’s no surprise that SPG Starpoints are favorites of many travelers. We even put together a list of 45 amazing redemptions to help you start thinking about your next vacation!

Bottom Line

Unlike Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, and Citi ThankYou Points, SPG does not offer nearly as many opportunities to earn points via credit cards. However, every Starpoint you earn is very valuable, and the program provides tons of options to book award flights and hotel stays.

If you like award travel (and we’ll assume you do), Starpoints can help you book some amazing vacations!
