Synchrony Bank doesn’t receive the same level of attention as major credit card issuers such as Chase, Citi, and American Express, but it plays a significant role in the U.S. credit card market, offering more than 100 store cards. The bank issues credit cards for well-known retailers and brands, including Amazon, eBay, PayPal, Sam’s Club, and Verizon.

Some of Synchrony Bank’s cards are store cards that can only be used with specific retailers, but it also offers co-branded and network cards. Network cards, or multiple-merchant cards, can be used with participating merchants, while co-branded cards with the Visa or Mastercard logo can be used anywhere cards are accepted.

Synchrony Bank cards are designed primarily for financing large purchases, but some offer rewards and perks that can pay off if you’re loyal to a particular brand. Store cards from Synchrony Bank may be easier to qualify for than traditional credit cards, especially if you have fair or average credit.

Let’s explore Synchrony Bank’s lineup of cards, from Synchrony-branded network cards to numerous store credit cards.

Best Credit Cards From Synchrony Bank

Synchrony offers a wide range of credit cards, but we’ve narrowed the list to our top 4 for travel and everyday spending.

Amazon Prime Store Card

The Amazon Prime Store Card offers 5% cash-back on all Amazon purchases. That alone makes this card worth it for many frequent Amazon shoppers. You must have an eligible Amazon Prime membership to receive the 5% cash-back on qualifying Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market purchases. Without a Prime membership, you get the Amazon.com Store Card, which does not earn 5% cash-back on purchases at Amazon. Amazon is often one of the quarterly bonus categories for cards like the Chase Freedom Unlimited®. But with the Amazon Prime Store Card, you can get 5% cash-back all year. This card comes with no annual fee.

Offered exclusively to Verizon Wireless customers, the Verizon Visa card is an excellent $0-annual-fee card for those who have their cell phone or internet service through Verizon Wireless. The card earns Verizon Dollars, which can be redeemed to lower your monthly Verizon bill (like a statement credit) or toward Verizon products. Each Verizon Dollar is equivalent to $1 in value, and there are no caps on earnings or expiration dates.

The rewards rate for the Verizon Visa card is quite strong, offering 4% back on gas, electric vehicle charging, restaurant, grocery store, and Verizon purchases (excluding bill payments), 1% back on Verizon Wireless or Verizon Fios account bill payments, and 1% back on all other purchases.

Cardholders receive up to $10 a month off each eligible wireless phone line (up to 12 lines maximum, depending on the plan) and up to $10 off a month for eligible Fios service when they use the card with Verizon’s Auto Pay. This perk alone could be hugely beneficial if you plan to stay with Verizon long term, as you could save $120 per line. Another benefit of the card is 0% financing options on accessory purchases.

There are many other Synchrony cards, but let’s take a look at some of their most popular cards.

American Eagle Real Rewards Credit Card

American Eagle Outfitters is a retail clothing store geared toward college-age adults. Additionally, it launched Aerie to compete with brands such as Victoria’s Secret. The American Eagle Real Rewards card earns 16% back at American Eagle or Aerie stores. All other purchases earn 5 points per $1. Once a shopper reaches 1,250 points, they receive a $5 reward coupon that can be used toward future purchases with either brand. Cardholders also receive free standard shipping, a $5 birthday coupon, special cardholder events, and more.

The Ashley Advantage card is more of a financing program than a true credit card. It can only be used at Ashley Furniture Home Stores and offers multiple financing options upon approval.

The 6-month financing plan does not require a minimum purchase when made online, but it may require one when buying in stores. The 12- and 24-month plans have minimum purchase requirements that may vary depending on whether you make a purchase online or in-store, and a store may not offer the 24-month plan. The 60-month financing plan is only valid for in-store purchases. Read the fine print on any financing offer to see if you can use a discount offer with them.

Belk Rewards+ Mastercard

The Belk Rewards card earns 1 point per $1 at Belk and allows returns without a receipt. Depending on how much you spend with Belk each year, you get benefits including rewards points, free standard shipping, a birthday reward, and pick-your-own sale days.

Getting Approved for Credit Cards With Synchrony Bank

Synchrony Bank credit cards are typically considered more accessible than cards from major issuers, especially store-branded cards. Applicants with fair or average credit still have reasonable approval odds, particularly for retail cards and financing products.

Although approval is never guaranteed, you’re likely to get approved with a credit score in the low-to-mid-600s or higher. Factors including income, debt, recent credit inquiries, and payment history also influence approval odds. A secured card may be a better choice if you have a poor credit score.

You can improve your chances of approval by keeping credit utilization low, paying credit card statements in full as much as possible, maintaining old accounts, and always making at least the minimum payment on time.

Final Thoughts

While there are clearly tons of options for credit cards from Synchrony, what they have in quantity, they seriously lack in quality. The Amazon Store Card, Sam’s Club cards, Verizon Visa card, and Cathay World Elite card might be helpful to a small segment of the population, but there’s a reason we don’t hear as much about Synchrony cards as we do about those from Chase or American Express. When it comes to earning miles and points for travel, Synchrony offers almost nothing.

If you’re just starting out, stick with earning Chase Ultimate Rewards and follow our guide for beginners to make the most of your credit card applications.
