While you might not hear of Synchrony Bank as often as Chase, Citi, or American Express, they provide over 100 credit card options to consumers. Many of these cards are linked to popular brands including Amazon, eBay, and PayPal.

Some of these cards offer some interesting cash-back opportunities. Synchrony Bank offers a co-branded airline card with Cathay Pacific and their co-branded Banana Republic card has been particularly popular as well.

Similar to Comenity Bank, which also offers tons of store-branded credit cards, Synchrony Bank store credit cards are often easier to obtain than some other cards.

One big difference between the two banks is that Synchrony Bank does not have a shopping cart trick that allows applicants to open store cards without a hard pull on their credit reports.

Let’s take a look at the many cards offered by Synchrony Bank and discuss some of the best and most popular cards they provide.

Note: We’ve researched a list of cards that typically offer better rewards than store cards do — and with 0% introductory APR which these cards below do not offer.

Synchrony Bank’s Credit Cards

List of All Synchrony Bank STORE Cards

Best Synchrony Bank Credit Cards

Synchrony Bank offers a wide range of credit cards, but we’ve narrowed down this big list down to our top 3 cards for travel and everyday spending.

Amazon Prime Store Card

The Amazon Prime Store Card offers 5% cash-back on all purchases on Amazon. That alone makes this card worth it for many frequent Amazon shoppers. You must have an eligible Amazon Prime membership to receive the 5% cash-back on your purchases.

If you do not have a Prime membership, you will only be able to use the Amazon.com Store Card, which does not earn 5% cash-back on purchases at Amazon.

Amazon is regularly one of the quarterly bonus categories for cards such as the Chase Freedom®. But with the Amazon Prime Store Card, you can get 5% cash-back all year.

This card comes with no annual fee.

Cathay Pacific Visa

Cathay Pacific A350
Book Cathay Pacific business class with a stopover thanks to Asia Miles.

The Cathay Pacific Visa is your best bet for a travel rewards card from Synchrony Bank. The card comes with a larger sign-up bonus than you’ll generally find with any Synchrony credit card, and it has a $95 annual fee that is not waived the first year.

It earns 2X miles per dollars on purchases with Cathay Pacific, 1.5X miles per dollar on dining purchases in the U.S. or abroad, 1.5X miles per dollar on other purchases abroad, and 1X miles per dollar on other domestic purchases.

This card doesn’t have foreign transaction fees, so the 1.5X miles per dollar could be useful when traveling abroad. You should still use a card such a the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card that earns more valuable points on bonus categories such as dining and travel when abroad.

If you’re a more advanced user of miles and points, you can redeem Asia Miles for some awesome trips on Cathay Pacific and their partners.

Sam’s Club Mastercards

Synchrony Bank offers both a business and personal version of the Sam’s Club Mastercard. These cards both earn 5% cash-back on purchases at gas stations and 3% cash-back at restaurants. All other purchases earn 1% cash-back.

The 5% cash-back at gas stations is limited to your first $6,000 spent. Additionally, a maximum of $5,000 in cash-back may be earned in total per calendar year.

Sam’s Club also offers store card versions, but they cannot be used at other merchants. While the Mastercard versions can be used at any merchant that accepts Mastercard, the Sam’s Club Credit Card can only be used at Sam’s Club and Walmart.

Neither version of the Sam’s Club Mastercard has an annual fee, but they do require a Sam’s Club membership.

Synchrony Bank’s Most Popular Cards

There are many other Synchrony Bank cards, but let’s take a look at some of their most popular cards.

American Eagle Outfitters Visa

American Eagle Outfitters
Earn rewards with American Eagle Outfitters and Aerie.

American Eagle Outfitters is a retail clothing store geared toward college-aged young adults. Additionally, they launched Aerie to compete with brands such as Victoria’s Secret.

The AEO Connected® Visa® Credit Card earns 15 points per $1 spent at American Eagle or Aerie stores. All other purchases earn 5 points per $1.

Once a shopper reaches 2,5000 points, they receive a $10 reward coupon that can be used toward future purchases with either brand.

Cardholders will also receive free standard shipping, a 20% off birthday coupon, a personal shopping day coupon, special cardholder events, and more.

Ashley Advantage Credit Card

The Ashley Furniture HomeStore credit card is more of a financing program than a true credit card. It can only be used at Ashely Furniture HomeStores and offers 4 different financing offers upon sign-up.

The 6- and 12-month financing plans do not require a minimum purchase, and the purchase may be made online or in-store and combined with discount offers.

The 24- and 48-month plans have minimum purchase requirements, but the purchase may still be completed online or in-store. It cannot be combined with discount offers.

The 60-month financing plan is only valid for in-store purchases and cannot be used with discount offers.

Banana Republic Visa

Banana Republic
Earn and redeem rewards for purchases at any Gap brand store thanks to the Banana Republic Visa.

Banana Republic is a clothing retailer that’s part of the Gap brand family that also includes Gap, Old Navy, Intermix, and Athleta.

The Banana Republic Visa earns 5X Reward Points per dollar on all purchases with any of the Gap brands. All other purchases earn 1X Reward points per dollar. For every 500 Reward Points, you will earn $5 to be used toward purchases at any of the Gap brands.

New cardholders will receive 20% off their first purchase at one of the Gap brands.

Cardholders who earn at least 5,000 Reward Points (not including bonuses) in a calendar year will be upgraded to the Luxe version of the card.

Luxe cardholders receive a 20% Reward Points bonus based on their spending every 3 months, bonus points shopping days, free shipping on many purchases, free basic alterations on merchandize from Banana Republic, and a “Choose Your Own Sale Day.”

Belk Store Cards

Belk offers 3 versions of their store card, but you have to reach spending thresholds to be upgraded from the basic Belk Rewards card.

The Belk Rewards card earns 1 point per dollar at Belk and allows returns without a receipt. If you spend $600 in a calendar year, you get these benefits plus special savings offers. With $1,500 in spending in a calendar year, more benefits are added including free shipping, quarterly “Pick Your Own Sales Days” that provide 20% off, and a 20% off coupon for your birthday.

Chevron and Texaco Visa Cards

The Chevron and Texaco Visa cards earn 3 cents per gallon in fuel credits on purchases with Chevron and Texaco. Additionally, you can earn 10 cents per gallon in fuel credit when you spend $300 at other merchants each month. If you spend $1,000 at other merchants in a given month, you’ll receive a discount of 20 cents per gallon.

These fuel credits must be redeemed at Chevron or Texaco gas stations.

Discount Tire Store Card

The Discount Tire/America’s Tire credit card provides a no-interest promo for your first purchase. The promotional no-interest timeframe can be 6 months, 9 months, or 12 months.

To qualify for 6 months of no interest, your purchase must be between $199 and $999.99. To qualify for 9 months of no interest, your purchase must be between $1,000 and $1,499.99. Finally, purchases of $1,500 or more qualify for a no-interest 12 months.

(There are also many credit cards with 0% interest rates for up to 18 months if that’s something you’re specifically looking for in a card.)

Lowe’s Store Cards

Lowe's Store

The Lowe’s Advantage Card provides a 5% discount on all purchases from Lowe’s. You can also choose to receive a 6-month special financing promotion if your purchase is at least $299. If your project will cost over $2,000, you will be eligible for project financing.

Additionally, Lowe’s offers 2 business credit cards through Synchrony Bank that provides the 5% discount.

American Express also provides a co-branded Lowe’s card that provides a 5% discount at Lowe’s but can be used at other merchants as well.

Rooms To Go Credit Card

The Rooms To Go credit card provides a promotional offer of interest-free financing for 60 months on qualifying purchases.

Similar to the credit card from Ashley Furniture HomeStore, the Rooms To Go credit card really only provides an option to finance purchases since the card cannot be used anywhere else.

TJ Maxx Credit Card

The TJX Rewards credit card (sometimes called the TJ Maxx credit card) is part of the Mastercard network, so it can be used at other merchants as well. There is also a store card version that can only be used at stores that are part of TJX Companies.

Both cards earn 5X points per dollar at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, and Sierra Trading Post stores, while the Mastercard also earns 1X points per dollar on purchases at other merchants.

For every 1,000 points you earn, you will receive a $10 certificate that can be redeemed at any of the stores in the TJX family.

Walmart Credit Cards

The Walmart credit card earns 3% back on Walmart.com. Image courtesy of Walmart.

Walmart is ending its relationship with Synchrony. In Q3 or Q4 2019, existing accounts will be transferred to Capital One, and all new accounts from the will be issued by Capital One.

The Walmart Mastercard and the Walmart credit card each earn 3% back on purchases made on Walmart’s website, 2% back on gas station purchases with Walmart or Murphy USA (though not Murphy Express), and 1% back on other purchases across the Walmart brands.

The Walmart MasterCard can be used at other merchants, and it earns 1% back on those purchases.

Synchrony Bank Credit Cards – Getting Approved

While Synchrony Bank does not have a “Shopping Cart Trick” like Comenity Bank credit cards to make approvals much easier, they are still considered a bank that is more likely to approve applicants.

To give yourself the best chance of approval, make sure you take care of your credit score. If you pay off your credit card bill and never carry a balance, your credit score will be in much better shape.

If you’re not paying off your card completely (which you really should be!) as a general rule, make sure that you’re not within 60% of your credit limit usage at the time of statement closing. If you ignore this, you’ll be demonstrating that you’re a consumer who really needs the bulk of their limit, which is a worrying sign to the banks!

The goal is to pay off your statement every month. If you can’t, then make sure that the payment you make reduces any balance to less than 60% of your credit limit.

For example, if your credit limit is $500, make sure your closing balance (after making a payment) is less than $300. The lower, the better!

Also, keep your oldest credit card open since the length of your opened accounts is an important part of building a foundation for your credit score.

There are many reports of people being approved for Synchrony Bank store cards with credit scores in the 600s. While there are many factors for approval and this doesn’t make an approval a guarantee, it can give you an idea of what to expect with Synchrony credit cards.

If this credit score is still too much of a leap for you, consider starting with a secured credit card.

Easy Credit Cards To Get (Low or No Credit)

The Capital One® Platinum Credit Card - This is an ideal card for those with no credit history or a low credit score, which means an easy approval. Get access to a higher credit line after making your first 5 monthly payments on time. This card has a $0 annual fee.
Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card - Earn 1.5% cash back on all purchases and get access to a higher credit line after making your first 5 monthly payments on time. An excellent card for those with no credit history or a low credit score. The annual fee is $39.

Final Thoughts

While there are clearly tons of options for credit cards from Synchrony Bank, what they have in quantity, they seriously lack in quality.

The Amazon Store Card, Sam’s Club cards, and Cathay Pacific Visa card might be useful to a small segment of the population, but there’s a reason we don’t hear about Synchrony cards as much as Chase or American Express.

When it comes to earning miles and points for travel, Synchrony Banks has almost nothing to offer. The Cathay Pacific Visa has its place, but it’s definitely not for beginners.

If you’re just starting out, stick with earning Chase Ultimate Rewards and follow our express guide for beginners to make the most of your credit card applications.

Spencer Howard

About Spencer Howard

Always a fan of flying, it was only natural that Spencer was drawn to finding a way to improve the travel experience. Like many, he started this journey searching for cheap flights to take him around the world. This was fun for a while, but Spencer was intrigued by the idea of flying in business and first class! Throwing himself into what became an extensive research project, Spencer spent 3-4 hours per night learning everything he could about frequent flyer miles over the course of several months (he thinks this is normal).

This company will cancel your card or lower your credit limit – even if you pay your bill on time, pay extra each payment, or pay it off every month! What’s the point of trying to build good credit, only to get punished for good behavior! 🙁

    • Bobbie W · January 7, 2018 · Reply

This just happened to me with one of my Synchrony cards, I have several. They refuse to reopen my card because they say I had a payment returned. After investing, a mini while I’m on the phone, with two account managers later, is realized I made two payments so my bank sent one payment back. Mind you both payments were for the same exact date. The bulk was paid in full as I’ve never carried a balance on my Amazon card.
I never even got a warning. I didn’t even know my card was canceled until I called. This happened in November. I was so able to use my card all of December, which I did in numbers, but paid it in full before the end of December. Even charged $11 this month and paid it. Yet my prime membership payment wouldn’t take. I wouldn’t have ever known they even closed my account.

      • Dawn Russell · February 16, 2019 · Reply

I had an Old Navy card with them and I always paid the balance in full and they closed my card. Then I got another card with them for Dental expenses, and I paid it off and they lowered my credit by half. Then I got a flex card with them and I paid it off in about three months and they took about $500 off my credit. This is illegal and we need to get a lot of people involved file a class action lawsuit!

        • Charlene Stewart · April 6, 2019 · Reply

Dawn, I agree with you a class action lawsuit. They are doing this to many people. Theu close my accounts because my personal bank made an error on my credit report. This dropped my credit score!

        • Synchrony Bank just canceled my Lowe’s card because I fell a payment behind on my Sams Club. My Lowe’s card was never late, always paid, so how do they get away with closing a card on another account. If they are mad about me being late on my payment, don’t they think it should be Sams Club card that they should close? I didn’t think they could do such a thing. That is deliberately ruining a persons credit. I honestly thought that was against the law! I think some of these stores should get rid of Synchrony Bank before their own businesses go under. I know I won’t be shopping any of these stores that deal with Synchrony Bank ever again. Since they closed my Lowe’s card, does that mean I don’t have to pay off the balance? I am sure a card can’t be closed if there is still a balance on the card. Count me in on a class action suit!

          • They didn’t want to close the card that had a balance in fear that you would stop paying it all together. So they closed a different one.

        • BTW , if you read the very fine print located in on that very thin, small print, paper that most people throw away when they receive their card , you will see that by using their card, YOU AGREE TO THEIR TERMS and one of those terms is that you waive your right to any type of class action lawsuit against them. Everything must be settled through some arbitrator, BS!

          • I have several cards and I have never had a problem paying on them each month. Some of my cards have been lowered because my credit score changed due to my income decreasing. They notified me of the change and explained why.
My suggestion to everyone don’t use the credit because you have it but try to use it when needed or necessary. I had to learn the hard way about having credit and what it means to use it wisely and I am grateful to Synchrony Bank for taking a chance on me when I needed to establish credit and value them for their constant communication of when payments are due and why things change. I pray that those that are not happy will one day understand why. Be blessed……

      • Sandra · May 4, 2019 · Reply

They don’t bend or listen to reasoning. They initially approved me for $1,200, after my first missed payment they lowered my credit limit to $200. I have used my Amazon card and paid in full for over a year now and they still won’t increase my credit line. It’s definitely not my credit score, because I was since approved for a $15,000 American Express card. That’s ok though. On the positive side of it, this decision limits my purchases. I sometimes buy on impulse. It’s definitely not my credit score.

    • Wendy Semyck · May 14, 2018 · Reply

      me too

I paid it off early and they cancelled the card. I had points built up too. Wonder if they will be honored by Amazon? I wish I would have finished my shopping cart before they did this as I have a bunch of home school curriculum in there and really needed to have this as an option to help pay for it.

Synchrony also lowered my limit to my then current balance which was 1/8th of the previous credit limit on JC Penney and cancelled my Lowes card directly after I paid it off.

Synchrony will be taking over for comenity with PayPal. I’m expecting to see my paypal card which I paid off two months early to be cancelled when they take over in July. Makes my stomach turn. too big for their own good.
Evidently, I won’t be shopping at some of my favorite places. Synchrony is NOT good.

    • Oh you are so full of it! I have many, many bank cards and store cards from Synchrony Bank — I have been with them well over 10 years. I have never, not once, had my credit limit reduced! I receive regular credit increases all the time! Synchrony Bank is the best!

      • Well aren’t you lucky!! And no he ISN’T full of it!! I had 3 different accounts closed by this company and had either ZERO owed to them or less than $200 on the card AND was UP TO DATE if there was a balance! WORST COMPANY I HAVE EVER SEEN!

        • The worst ever. Barely used the card, paid it in full and they closed my account. We ask why, they said I have several credit limits and they considered me a risk. So I guess I should have not brought a new truck and they would have let me keep the little $1,000. Please, guys bank with Chase, Amex and such. Stay away from Synchrony their ratings are low. Everyone seems to have similar complaints

      • Hmmmm strange and you must be lucky cause I had a limit of 1000.00 and never spent anywhere near that and paid off my balance every month and they reduced my limit to 500.00 and still paid off every month and received a email tonight alerting me from credit karma I had a closed acct .. so they closed my account out without reason NEVER missed a payment

      • TWhite · March 26, 2019 · Reply

It is true, they can and will lower your limits and or close the account. I currently have over 15 cards with them; last year my credit card usage percentage went up on my credit report. Within about 4 months, my credit limits started to lower as they seem to have thought I was a high risk. I did, however, get a letter for each account that was lowered. I had 3 cards closed all together that have always been in good standing. Once my credit utilization went back to around 30% usage then I got my limits back. Also if I have not used a retail card in over a year, I will get a letter basically stating I need to use it or lose it.

      • Mrs. Robin H · June 4, 2019 · Reply

I totally agree with you. I have several synchrony cards. I’ve never had a problem with them lowering any of my credit limits. Several of my cards are paid in full & at least 3 of them I’m currently carrying a balance on.

I’ve never missed a payment on any of my cards. I don’t know what the real reason is these people are complaining about them lowering their limits and canceling their cards. But I think it has to be something else than just non-use of the card.

My husband missed a payment on one of his cards and they lowered his limits, but it was because he was irresponsible with managing his payments. His fault, not theirs which is why we have separate credit cards, because I handle my bills differently than he does.

I love synchrony… They really helped me build my credit score &a they have never turned me down for one of there cards.

        • Eustacia N. · June 13, 2019 · Reply

I initially was approved for $300 and without warning, they dropped my credit limit to $150. I called to complain and they said my credit score had changed? I’ve had the card for almost a year, so it’s really strange that two other cards have raised my credit limit to $2000. So if they don’t want my business I will take it elsewhere.

          • Hi Eustacia,

I’m sorry you’ve had a negative experience, but please be aware that we have no affiliation with Synchrony Bank. We are Upgraded Points, a blog specializing in providing credit card and travel-related resources. For more information as to why your credit limit was lowered, I would advise you to call the customer service number on the back of your card.

I started with a Fred Meyer synchrony card for jewelry, and then a purchase at Mattress Firm, They have INCREASED my credit limit. I am paying ahead of schedule and on track to have both paid off early. So far, so good.

    • I am totally baffled by this. I never was late, paid to zero balance, and my card was canceled. I only have one card thru Synchrony otherwise I would just cancel all my cards. I will NEVER apply for credit from any of the cards offered thru Synchrony again!

      • Lois Darr · April 11, 2019 · Reply

I did not know until yesterday that they owned PayPal. I got a message that my account was suddenly being processed by Synchrony. Unclear why. I had just paid off in full two other accounts with them. I had found them very difficult to deal with already due to the odd due dates and personnel lacking in knowledge. I am in for a class action suit. But are they a U.S company? Maybe not and that is how they get by with this.

    • Cathy Gonzalez · August 29, 2019 · Reply

Yes, your right about this, if your credit score drops, they lower your limit quickly on all cards listed.
      I have experienced this myself.
If your balance is high and paying on time, they will still lower your limits.

  2. I experienced my Ashley account limit decreased by $900 without forewarning or understanding why. I made a practice of paying well over the amount despite hitting a rough patch due to mother suffering a massive stroke with paralysis and becoming her caretaker. Life happens, but I felt punished.

I don’t know what is going on with Synchrony. I opened a Discount Tire CarCareONE account with them when I bought tire at Discount Tire. After doing so, I never heard from them again. I never received any monthly payment invoices. Nor did I receive any correspondence as to the reason why they where not being sent. I did visit Discount tire several times and called a number they provided. However, Synchrony did not address my concern. It seem as if they had forgotten me. Soon or later, I expected them to get their act straight. I work in Customer Service and know that sometimes “things happen”. To my dismay, I learned that Synchrony charged off my account to a company named Midland Credit Management who is now suing me for non payment. This situation is absurd. I was never given any opportunity to make kind of payment to them. They sold my account without giving me any chance to rectify the adverse situation that was totally caused by their negligence. I am livid. This matter has caused me great harm to my credit score. This in turn has caused me to delay sorely needed home improvements, dental and other medical procedures. Anyone out there experience the same problem??

    • Wendy Semyck · May 14, 2018 · Reply

WOW! Nearly had that happen to me with one of the Synchrony bank cards! I consider myself lucky that I figured it out online and started making payments through the website. They were not sending paper copies of the bill or emailing me. Contacting the store did nothing. Sorry this happened. I Hope that someone gets it fixed for you.

can i make cash withdrawals from credit card ? if so where do i make this transaction?

    • Nancy – you’ll be able to withdraw cash from a credit card using via an ATM but I would NEVER do this. It’s called a “Cash Advance” and the interest rates and charges are unbelievably high. I would only ever consider this in an absolute emergency!

    • Jerry · May 9, 2018 · Reply

Never make cash withdrawals from credit cards even with a very good credit card. I just opened this credit card and do not even plan to use it much it is only to raise my credit score. In other words treat a card like it was closed or like a debit card. Also keep reading how this bank closes credit accounts for no reason.

  5. Rob Tapp · February 2, 2018 · Reply

Do not apply for this credit card.
Synchrony bank does not handle transactions properly.
You get frequent phone calls from their 800 number and they barely speak English and try to scam you for more purchases.
When talking to their management they seem like they are on interested in your problem.

Do not apply for this credit card for any credit cards through synchrony bank

Every comment on here about this awful bank I have experienced. They charged my bank twice in 2 days on same store. They don’t help you when you are financially strapped for a temporary time. They charge outrageous late fees even when you have made payemnt arrangements bc they failed to tell that you have to make scheduled payments on your original due date. They don’t speak English very well and keep you asking same questions over and over. They will harrass you non stop calling every day at least 6 or 7 times if you are one day late. I don’t know why so many companies use them. Don’t get this card with any store or one of their sister cards.

    • I’ve been paying 1/4 of my monthly payment every Friday for the last 9 months.

In the last 2 months, both my Lowes account and my Matress Firm account have been getting charged late fees. All of a sudden my payment method doesn’t work, and although they “appreciate my weekly payments” that cover the monthly balance and then some…it’s not enough to avoid the late fee.

I’m done working with this company.

I’ll be getting a personal loan to pay off all my accounts with them and just use our credit union’s credit card.

    • W. Ferguson · February 4, 2019 · Reply

All of the negative comments regarding these folks are so true. Stay away at all costs! Or it will cost you…

  7. I have three different cards with them, and with all due respect, I have never had an issue. I make my payments on time and when I asked for credit increase I’ve gotten them. Unlike American Express and Discover that took it on themselves to lower my credit limit and put the account at 80% utilization.

I agree. I have nine accounts with these guys. They are great. Very generous with increases. Payment processing is reasonable. No complaints.

    • Yes, sorry but same here – I have had my Amazon Store Card account the longest – also have Discount Tire and recently got Care Credit. You can link all your accounts into one online portal and schedule and pay that way. Very simple.

On the Amazon card they have the 6 month 0% APR for purchases over $100. Think twice about programming 6 equal payments of $16.67, Synchrony will make the minimum payment $18.00, if you think you can divide the balance in equal installments this is where they get you. You will get a late fee of $21 for not paying the $1.33 balance.

How do I link all accounts together on one site to keep track of them?

      • This company closed 3 of my accounts in the same month. They all had a $0 balance and the reasons they gave were bogus – I always paid my bills. They did me a favor because now I won’t be shopping at any of their stores, period.

    • I totally agree! Between my husband and I we have several accounts and have never had an issue! Increases come unexpectedly, bills come in, customer service is wonderful once I got their number saved. I have to say if you have an account with any company and you know you owe them money YOU have to be proactive in contacting that company to find out how to pay. Synchrony had a website that keeps all the cards you have with them so there is no reason to say “I don’t know how to pay”!

      • Celeste · May 3, 2018 · Reply

I agree as well. I have Care Credit with $15,000 limit, Amazon $7000 and Care Care One $4000 and City Furniture and Ashley Furniture $3000 and Old Navy and Lowe’s $7000. I didn’t start with those limit, every six month they increased my limit when asked, for the past two years and I have never had any problems with them. Never needed customer service so I’m not sure about that. I love all the benefits of my cards. All of them have no interest payment options which is what I always use and pay way before the promotional period is over. They even upgraded my Old Navy to Navyist Visa status. Truly a great bank that gave me a chance and helped me grow my credit. I asked for a credit limit increase even when I didn’t need it just to have high availability so my credit utilization can always stay under 20%. I’m not sure where these complaints are coming from. The only thing is with Care Credit if you don’t use it for a year, it closes. I had to reopen one, from now I can just make a medication purchase to never let it close again.

  8. Do not even consider getting any cards whatsoever from this company! Every comment you have heard above is absolutely TRUE!! They are a horrible horrible bank to do any business with!! Save yourself the stress, aggervation and heartache and find another financial institution! I’m serious!!

  9. I have being with this bank for a while and I am very pleased. Never ever had any issues, never ever being later, no statement issues, no customer service issues, never asked for credit increased those came at their will. I will be around them for a much longer time to come.

I also have a few cards from synchrony bank , make up to 4 times the minimum payments every month, never late, but was short on payment for a couple days and they took $2500 off my credit limit. Not happy because I had paid at least 4 times the minimum the month before. A lot of my payments will carry over into the next month. I’ll look to see what I owe and it’ll say $0 balance due, but still pay! They said I had too many cards with high balances. But I pay them every month, sometimes weekly.

  11. I had a family issue, and had a drop in my overall credit score due to late and a non payment on a different company credit card. Within the month, Synchrony dropped my QVC card limit from 2000 to 100, plus dropped my 2 other cards to the limit I already was at, reducing over 3000 of my credit – leaving me with absolutely no credit with them except what was owed (even though I pay Synchrony early and double the minimum). The problem on my credit was with Discover and had nothing to do with Synchrony. Due to family issues I had to choose who to pay, I chose to pay Synchrony because I had more cards with them and used their cards more and Discover card APR was much higher and had previous issues with Discover. So I trusted Synchrony more. Big mistake, they screwed me over and ruined my credit by destroying my balance to credit ratio lowering my credit by over 130pts! Absolutely Ridiculous!

Synchrony Bank stinks! They lie to the credit bureau on your account status, and close your accounts immediately once you pay off your balance. No chance of establishing credit with this company. Don’t waste your time!

I am so disappointed with this bank. I have paid all my cards on time and they still closed some of my accounts and dropped the credit amount. I have never been late. I don’t understand how they operate. I opened a Lowes account to do some work on my home and unexpectedly they closed the account, before I could get the work done. I am so disappointed.

    • Synchrony Bank sucks they lowered my Wal Mart limit from $1500 to $130 I refuse to use the card anymore maybe they will close the account.I truly don’t care at this point

    • Same for me! I don’t see how they are getting away with what they are doing.

  14. I had three Synchrony Bank credit cards: JC Penny, Rooms To Go and Ashley Furniture. I never ever paid them late and always paid them before the payment due dates. I had zero interest for 48 months with Rooms To Go (limit $8,000) and Zero interest for 24 months with Ashley Furniture (limit $6000). I was never anywhere close to the limits being they used to increase my limits for years with JC Penny which was $5000. I never even went over $500 spending with JC Penny after being with them for over 10 years because I prefer Macy’s. I paid Rooms To Go off early in 24 months and Ashley Furniture off early in 10 months this year. I always paid JC Penny off at the end of every month and sometimes it went for months without being used and a zero balance for months. Fast Forward: They closed all my accounts right after I paid them all off this year right away due to them pulling my credit scores. They said even though I never had any problems with their credit cards I was now a risk to them. NEXT…..My credit score went down by 100 points due to them closing all of my accounts after I paid them all off and never had a late payment on my credit report for them. It shows closed by creditor on my credit report. My credit score only dropped because I was sick for 3 months and got behind on 2 loans. I busted my butt to always pay Synchrony and they screwed me over big time. No worries when my credit score goes back to being over 700 again. I will never ever open any accounts with this company, they punish you for doing the right thing and I hate this company!

I have a perfect pay history and have many Synchrony cards since 2015. I have never been late, always pay weeks before due and many times 3 – 4xs my minimum payment or pay off. Just recently I had a derogatory remark made on my credit bureau for a hospital bill of $249. I am fighting with the hospital and my insurance on this. I know I should have just shut my mouth and paid it. Well, I just paid off JC Penney and they closed my account due to that negative remark on my account. That should not have anything to do with my history with JC Penney. I am not dealing with them anymore. I have lost all respect for a company, that sees me as a risk even though it is only a $249 hospital bill.

    • It is my understanding that medical bills can’t be listed on your report. I could can be wrong but I thought that law was passed two years ago.

      • Christine Krzyszton · August 15, 2018 · Reply

I did some research on this topic because I had heard there was a change as well. Here is the information from Experian on medical bills and your credit:
“If a medical bill is left unpaid, the debt can be sold to a collection agency. The collection agency can then report the account to your credit reports, although the name of the doctor or medical office will not be revealed. Once on your credit report, medical collections can remain for seven years from the original delinquency date and can hurt your credit scores, just like any other collection account.

Experian no longer displays medical collections on a credit report until they are 180 days past due. This grace period gives individuals with medical debt six months to resolve any insurance or billing issues and to make payment arrangements if necessary before the past due balance is reported. After six months, the medical collections could become part of your credit report. However, the newest credit scoring formulas from FICO and VantageScore do not weigh medical collections as heavily as other types of collection accounts and may not count them at all after the collection is paid.”

  17. I had CareCredit before Synchrony Bank took over. Now I am about to close my account. I was mailed a promotion and I signed up for it. I made qualifying purchases but on my statement I was informed I received zero points. When I called Customer Service the representatives had no idea what the promotion was, I had to ask for a manager who still was clueless. I read the promotion to the manager and after having me on hold for 30 minutes she told me my card did not qualify. Absolute dishonesty and I will not stand for it.

This is a horrible greedy company, they do not employ Americans unless is it at Corporate level. They cancelled my cards because I had too many open even though there was no balance on any of them. Wow! No worries, I will be cancelling my TJX card because they are garbage.

  21. Same thing had a Walmart card for convenience and a Metrostyle card, using autopsy lowered my limit to $200 when all I owed was $175. Paid them both off and closed them. Had a QVC I got for payments on a computer. They then lowered my limit to almost the purchase price. Returned the computer, got a refund and closed the account. I’ve got one more PayPal credit card and will pay that off and close it next. The reason I’m closing them is because if they close it, it looks worse on your credit report then if you close it…and the way they operate is that you never know when they’re going to close your account especially when you get to a zero balance. So, the minute I pay it off…I’m closing it.

  26. Synchrony Bank is by the worst company I have ever had to deal with! Every month they change my minimum due on a plan that my payments are supposed to fixed. Every time I call they tell me my payment was late and didnt meet the minimum due. I signed up from lowes for a fixed interest rate and they change it every month. Every month I spend hours on the phone with them. They tell me its Lowes issue and I have to go into the store to get them to fix it. I spend hours in the store. Then every month they add another payment plan to my account. I call synchrony and they yet again tell me it’s a lowes issue. It is not a lowes issue it is a Synchrony issue. I’ve personally witnessed every conversation between lowes and synchrony. Lowes does everything synchrony tells them to do and yet it never gets fixed. I’ve cancelled all store credit cards. I will never accept an account through Synchrony ever again! Synchrony is the worst!!!

This has got to be one of the most dishonest banks ever. I wish someone could sue them and close them down. Won’t go into detail of my misfortune with Evine and them, but they made the mistake, but would never correct what it caused. Sometimes people run into trouble but try hard to catch up, but once you get into their evil eye, they watch like a hawk, then you pay it down and they lower your available credit or cancel or close the card. In these cases, you can never let your credit score rise. I sent an email to them, sent a registered letter and they don’t even have the courtesy to respond. I will do everything in my power to never be involved with them again. I hope somebody could do something about their procedures. This bank really needs a thorough investigation.

  28. Everything being said pertaining to this company is true…DO NOT ever get any of the cards affiliated with this bank they are the worst ever. They lowered my card twice although it was paid and then just closed the account without any fair warning. I send this list to anyone I know that is inquiring about a credit card and tell them do not apply for any on this list. Go with a reputable credit card company because synchrony is not! I am in a credit group on Facebook and the post in regards to this bank are always the same horrible! DO NOT! I repeat DO NOT apply for any card that is affiliated with this bank!!

  29. What gets me the most is the whole concept of “Predicting your Creditworthiness”! If you are being paid on time…how can you “Predict” in the future that I will not continue to pay you? I’ve decided to close my account with Synchrony Bank, for I am not pleased with their credit methods. My decision and my decision alone!

Synchrony is short for “we have no clue” – I have them for Lowes, Paypal Mastercard and Amazon Prime. You MUST watch your payments to them like a freaking hawk. Minimum payment irregardless as I pay more than minimum. However, they divide your payment HOW THEY SEE FIT, which folks, benefits them, not you. I just made a $200 payment to Amazon card. I have 24 deferred balances with Amazon (hey, you wanna offer my 6 month 0% sure!) I know I will pay off in 6 months. So I have them staggered. 6 in November, 6 in December, 6 in January and 6 in February. My $200 was 90% to November expiration. Then the remaining $14.63 was divided among 18 other a balances, some at little at 29 cents! Yes, PENNIES. Like who does that help? Which by the way, I had a November balance that was $14.15, they could have paid off one more November expiration!

  31. I didn’t apply for a cc from them, but went through a company that they do financing for. I was denied twice and no reason from the credit company as to why. With a credit score of 800+, bills paid on time, so I went to AMEX and was given a credit line of 25K. Moving forward and not looking back!

  32. Stay away from any company using Synchrony bank as their credit extender.!! Dropped my credit limit with Belk’s despite having little to no balance. Closed my Lowe’s card despite paying on it!! Significantly reduced my friends card because she made a “one time large purchase “ so she was told when she called. Ridiculous!!

I have had synchrony bank for other accounts and all paid for with no issues .

  34. What gets me the most is the entire idea of “Foreseeing your Creditworthiness”! In the event that you are being paid on time… how might you “Foresee” later on that I won’t keep on paying you? I’ve chosen to close my record with Synchrony Bank, for I am not satisfied with their credit strategies. My choice and my choice alone!

I have been paying off all of my credit cards one by one. My TJMAXX/Marshall’s/Home Depot cards have paid off for months, my GAP card had automatic payments so never late and paid off for 5 months. All of the sudden, I get notice that all of these accounts have been cancelled. When they cancel a card it affects my credit, I should be getting my credit score increased for paying them off and lowering my outstanding debt. I can say I will never use another Synchrony Bank card again. Look up the cards they cover, b/c they cover a lot. I’d rather use my VISA/MASTERCARD and not use another synchrony card again. I will be contacting my credit bureaus to report them.

    • I too had my cards shut off upon payoff and have letters to prove. Lowe’s was over 20cents. More recently my JC Penney card which I had for 30 years! They ruined my credit by stopping my cards! Won’t shop a store that use Synchrony as their card.

I barely had my Old Navy account for very long, but I never recieved an actual card for the store, and the very small amount that I purchased on the day I opened the account, I had paid off. As soon as I paid it off, they closed the account on me! I have had my Amazon store card longer, and they keep lowering my limit, even though I pay more than the minimum each month and on time. Calling their customer service line gets you nowhere except frustrated with their poor English and condescending attitudes and unwillingness to give you numbers to contact the corporate headquarters. I paid off my Amazon card balance after last night’s frustrating call to their published number — an hour of being told they cannot help me. I suspect it won’t be long before they close the account, but I refuse to pay them any more interest. Really, the majority of working-class people will have this experience, so just avoid them completely, and save yourself the frustration.

  45. I just recently had my 0 balance card closed with no explanation. I attempted to make a purchase and was declined. When I called I was told the account had been closed 3 days prior. You can also dispute the charge in question by calling. If you have access to your account online, you may be able to dispute the charge there as well. It is important to dispute the charge as soon as possible. The card issuer will follow up with a confirmation to you in writing after this has been done.

I had Walmart, Lowes, Amazon, Care Credit, and Pay Pal and each and every one of them were closed without my knowledge. What they did first was this i.e., Walmart – I had a Total Credit Available of $2500.00 (nice right?). I only owed $700. They closed my account (no notification), then when I went to pay my bill, tell me that my available credit was $100.00, and for the remaining $600, they started charging me late fees, overage fees, etc. (like the IRS). Afterward, I get a letter in the mail that was predated from like 6 months prior saying they were closing my account for being over my limit. TOTAL BAIT AND SWITCH – I was only late with a couple of my payments due to my disabled son being in the hospital (pay for my hotel or pay a bill situation, called in advance, said no problem they understood because I was a single parent). They are the DEVIL. I looked them up under the BBB and you would NOT believe the same exact stories you will read. I am trying to move from California back home to Georgia, to have family support for myself and my son and was going to use my VA Loan to try and get us a house. NO THANKS to “Synchrony”, my Credit Score is now BELOW 400. They are money grubbing POS. As a Veteran and a single mother to a 30-year-old disabled adult dependent, I feel like I’m not far away from having to sit on a street corner with a sign asking for help thanks to these jerks. Oh and btw…They had the audacity to ask me if I wanted to keep my Amazon Prime??? ARE YOU KIDDING??? NOOOO WAAAYYYY!!! You close my account, yet still want to automatically take money out of my account for Prime…Bite Me!!! Sign me as: Screwed by Synchrony – the uncaring company who rips everyone off!

My Nissan card went from 7,000 to 1,024, Amazon from 5,000 to 1,024, Paypal from 5,000 to 1,024, and they closed my Toy’s R Us Visa card. Other companies have sent me an email to let me know if I don’t use the card within 60 days they will lower my credit or close the account, at least they let you know, unlike Synchrony. In 10 days they turned it down saying they did not see where the item was returned. I called them and they opened the case again . In 10 business days they closed the case again . They said they could not see where the item was shipped back . I called again and gave them the Fedex tracking number and the person’s name that picked the item up. They told me to email a copy of that. I did and within the hour they closed the case again. They told me they could not make outside calls. I asked them how did they return my call and she stated the case is closed. These people have taken over Paypal. Minnkotafactoryoutlett.com has my money and the item.

Hello Bill. Minn Kota is a reputable company rated A+ with the Better Business Bureau and been in business 50 years. With Fedex documentation they should be receptive to your inquiry and validate that the item was returned. You may try this avenue if you haven’t already.

I live in the Dominican Republic. Can I apply for the Chase Freedom?

      Hi Florencia,

You must have a Social Security Number and credit history within the United States to apply for any credit card. Thanks for reading.

  56. The worst bank ever, don’t deal with them because they have the worst customer service and they will close your account for no reason. You will regret the moment you deal with Synchrony.

  57. This “bank” is a scam. They will give you credit, and without reason, will lower your credit score by decreasing your available credit so they can charge you more interest. It’s a scam.

Synchrony Bank issues about 190 credit cards, including store cards.
