These inflatable boards have transformed the world of stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) with their affordable price tags and portable designs. Made from tough and durable materials, these boards offer incredible stability on the water, and with the ability to pack them away for easy transportation, they have made stand-up paddleboarding accessible to all.

Things To Consider With Stand-Up Paddleboards

Paddleboard Length

Your inflatable SUP will provide you with many hours of fun on the water. To ensure that you invest in the best model to suit your needs, consider the following before you buy:

Types of Water

Inflatable SUPs are suitable for use in most types of water. While you may think that an inflatable wouldn’t be strong enough to withstand the rigors of fast-moving water, its flexible nature actually lends them greater durability. Designed to be puncture- and abrasion-resistant, they are actually an excellent choice for use in whitewater.

The flexible design also makes it easy to transition from gentle flat water to fast flowing rivers, meaning you don’t have to cut your journey short if the lay of the land changes, and the bouncy bottoms are much better equipped to deal with rocks and logs than a solid hull would be.

Bottom Line: While inflatable paddleboards are also suitable for use in the ocean, you may want to leave this to more experienced paddlers.

Length

There are 2 main sizes to choose from when it comes to inflatable SUPs, both of which offer varying advantages over the other. While longer boards are often faster, shorter boards tend to be easier to maneuver in the water. As a general rule of thumb, 10-foot boards are better for surfing, and 11-foot boards are ideal for all-around use and SUP yoga.

The length of your board will ultimately determine how well it will perform in different types of water, so do your research before you buy.

Width

The width of the board should also be considered, as this can also affect how the board handles the water. Wider boards are more stable than their skinnier counterparts, but they can also feel much slower. While inflatable SUPs usually range in width from 25 to 36 inches, there are various factors that will determine which width will work best for you.

31- to 33-inch paddleboards are best for longer tours as they offer more space for storing your gear, and the increased deck space is also beneficial for SUP yoga. Beginners and younger paddlers may also benefit from a wider SUP in the early stages. Slimmer boards are better suited to experienced paddlers or those who aren’t afraid of going fast.

Finally, consider your own body size when choosing the width of your board. Smaller paddlers are better suited to thinner boards where they can easily reach the edges with their oars, while larger riders may feel more stable on wider boards.

Weight and Capacity

Paddleboard Thickness
Choose a paddleboard that can comfortably take your weight. Image Credit: Amar Hussain

If you don’t want to sink or wobble on the water, choose a paddleboard that can comfortably take your weight. Many manufacturers have a recommended weight capacity for their paddleboards, but they can, in some cases, be a little bit too optimistic.

Most inflatable paddleboards are designed to hold paddlers weighing between 220 and 330 pounds, but to ensure that you never risk feeling unstable or succumb to unwanted drag, give yourself a margin of a few pounds less than the maximum recommended weight.

Hot Tip: If you are a lot lighter than the maximum weight, you may even be able to double up with a friend or bring the dog along for double the fun on the water.

Thickness

The thickness of your inflatable paddleboard will directly affect the overall volume and weight capacity it offers. The thicker the board, the more weight it will be able to comfortably support, so your body size and weight should be considered when considering the thickness of your SUP.

Fins

Paddleboard Fin
The large main fin is there to help you track straighter in the water. Image Credit: Amar Hussain

Inflatable SUPs can come with bottom fins, some of which may even be removable for greater versatility as your ride. The large main fin is there to help you track straighter in the water, while the smaller fins will help you to make sharper turns and enjoy a higher level of maneuverability.

The fins on your inflatable may either be made from flexible rubber or semi-rigid materials and can come in a choice of a 3-fin setup for better control in the water or a 2+1 setup that is more commonly found in SUPs designed for surfing.

Paddles

Inflatable SUP paddles are usually designed to fold up for easy transportation and are often made from lightweight materials like carbon or nylon. Easy to use, the paddle will help you to pull your way through the water, and many of them are designed to float should you accidentally let go of them.

Pumps

Your inflatable SUP must be property inflated if you want to perform well while you paddle. While there are many different types of pumps to choose from, be sure that you opt for one with a pressure gauge, so you accurately judge the psi.

Hot Tip: A properly inflated board will feel solid under your feet, and while many inflatable SUP sets come with double-action hand pumps included, you may want to invest in a faster, higher-quality pump that is more reliable.

Leashes

Paddleboard Leash
A leash will tether the board to you so that you don’t loose it. Image Credit: Amar Hussain

Another standard issue accessory in most inflatable SUP sets is an ankle leash. With a Velcro ankle attachment and a length of synthetic rope, these leashes help to tether the board to you. Perfect for use in the surf to ensure that your board never runs away from you should you fall off, these leashes are also useful for flat water and river adventures.

Traveling

If you are planning on traveling with your paddleboard, inflatable boards offer many benefits over solid models. Lightweight and compact when deflated, they usually come with their own carry bag or backpack that can easily be stashed in the trunk of your car or in overhead storage bins on buses, trains, and airplanes.

Inflatable SUPs are also far more practical if you plan to hike to the waterfront or camp around the lake. Highly portable, these air-filled fun boards will let you enjoy long paddles, high-octane water sports, or even relaxing tours on the water without weighing you down on the journey there.

Storage

Solid SUPs take up a lot of space and will need a dedicated storage room in your garage or outhouse. On the other hand, an inflatable model can be folded up small enough to fit into a backpack, making it far easier to store back at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will an inflatable SUP last?

A high-quality inflatable SUP could last as long as 5 years depending on how often you use it, how well it is looked after and stored, and the material and build quality. Some manufacturers will even offer warranties longer than this.

Will my dog pop an inflatable paddleboard?

Most paddleboards are made from super-durable materials with multiple layers, making it unlikely that your dog will pop or puncture your board. Just remember to consider your dog’s weight and the load-bearing capacity of your board.

Should you deflate your paddleboard after use?

You can leave your paddleboard inflated, provided it’s stored somewhere out of direct sunlight, in a cool space, and not on the ground. Also, if you are driving around with your paddleboard inflated, changes in altitude can also damage your board.

How wide should a paddleboard be?

The width of your paddleboard should be based on your skill level and what you intend to use it for. Most paddleboards are usually between 30 and 35 inches wide. Beginners will want a wider board for more stability. You should also consider the length of the board. Paddleboards 11 feet or just under make great all-around boards.
