One reason South America is so popular is the ease of getting there. If you’re traveling from the Eastern or Central U.S., you may not even need to change time zones.

Mendoza, Argentina

Mendoza, Argentina, is a short flight from Santiago, Chile, which is a route that sees many nonstop flights per day. It’s also a gateway city to the spectacular Andes Mountains bordering Chile.

The country has experienced a series of tough years economically, and while the Argentines are optimistic about its future, the economy still struggles. As a result, visitors can receive tremendous value for their dollars and perhaps help the economy while doing so.

The city’s affordability, breathtaking landscapes, wine country, and outdoor activities make it a desirable destination.

Where To Stay Using Points

Mendoza is a city where you can plan a vacation with all the amenities without using hundreds of thousands of hotel loyalty points.

Here are some of the great lodging options using points:

Marriott

The Sheraton Mendoza is a perfect choice for exploring the city. It is located in the city center and surrounded by restaurants, shopping, and attractions. Rooms are available for as few as 16,500 Marriott Bonvoy points.

The upscale Auberge du Vin, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel, Tupungato, will impress any wine lover. This Uco Valley property is bookable for as few as 22,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Hilton

The Hilton Mendoza is about a 10-minute ride to the city center but is conveniently located near the highway if you rent a car. The hotel also has meeting facilities. Rooms start at 34,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

Surrounded by shops and restaurants, the Hualta Hotel Mendoza, Curio Collection by Hilton, is bookable from 44,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

Hyatt

The luxurious Park Hyatt Mendoza is in the city center, just 15 minutes from the airport. Rooms at this Category 4 hotel start at 12,000 World of Hyatt points per night. Things To Do

Mendoza and the surrounding area offer a wealth of things to do, no matter what you prefer. Here’s a look at just some of the options:

• A day in the high Andes Mountains is an unforgettable experience. On the way, you’ll view Aconcagua Park, the Potrerillos Dam, Puente del Inca, and Las Cuevas, the last town before the Chilean border. Here is a tour we booked with Viator that included all of the above.
• Mendoza is a premier wine-producing region that exports most of Argentina’s exported wines. With over 1,200 vineyards, you’re sure to find a few to enjoy. Consider booking a wine tour here.
• Head out to the beautiful Atuel Canyon for outdoor adventure sports, including hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, fishing, mountain biking, and more.
• Spend a day in Aconcagua Provincial Park, hike to visit Horcones Pond, and admire the largest peak in the world outside of the Himalayas.
• Whether a sunset ride, traversing through the vineyards, along a valley trail, or up a mountain, horseback riding is a great way to see the countryside. Viator has several horseback riding tours to choose from.

Food To Try

• If you’re a meat eater, a traditional Argentine asado barbeque should be at the top of your list when visiting Mendoza. It’s a social gathering with grilled meats of all kinds. If you’re not in a social mood, you can still find top-quality steak at restaurants throughout Mendoza or cook your own at an Argentine barbeque cooking class.
• If you’re staying at the Sheraton Mendoza or nearby, try any version of the pasta at Devas Lobby Bar. It’s some of the best I have ever had, and my travel partner agreed.
• Restaurante Sancho, also near the Sheraton Mendoza, serves traditional Argentinian fare. For $32 total, we enjoyed fish, steak, 3 side dishes, empanadas, a bottle of wine, and after-dinner drinks.
• Top off your meal with dulce de leche, a sweet caramel milk cream.

Quito, Ecuador

Quito, the Ecuadorean capital, should be on your travel list for several reasons. First, it uses the U.S. dollar as its currency. Second, because it’s located on the equator, there are several interesting sites to visit. Plus, there’s the Incan culture, the mountains, and some of the oldest structures in South America. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Quito has a population of more than 1.75 million. Its footprint is 5 kilometers (about 3 miles) wide and over 50 kilometers (about 31 miles) long, winding through the valley between the Andes mountains. The temperate climate and proximity to the equator make it perfect for agriculture.

Quito is frequently a stopover city for travelers headed to the Galápagos Islands. Before visiting the Galápagos, spending the night here is often necessary. 

Where To Stay Using Points

Finding lodging bookable with hotel loyalty points in Quito will be a breeze. Plus, all of these choices have easy access to everything going on in the city.

The JW Marriott Quito is arguably one of the nicest places to stay in the city. It’s also perfectly located for walking to major attractions. Rates hover consistently around 42,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Hilton

Casa Gangotena, a Mr & Mrs Smith property, serves up luxury in the heart of Quito’s Old Town on the prestigious Plaza San Francisco. Built on an old Incan temple site with the UNESCO World Heritage city right outside your door, there’s sure to be an adventure in store. Rooms are available from 49,250 World of Hyatt points per night.

IHG

The Holiday Inn Express Quito is one of the most charming I’ve stayed at. It’s more of a boutique hotel than a sterile chain property. Rooms start at 13,000 IHG One Rewards points. Located across from the JW Marriott, it’s a nice choice if you prefer a more affordable option — and it would also be great for families.

As transportation from Quito airport to/from the city can take 45 minutes or more, the Holiday Inn Quito Airport is a convenient option for staying overnight before an early flight or during a layover. You can book rooms from 19,000 IHG One Rewards points.

Things To Do

Quito’s geographical location makes it a stunning place to visit — the city and its surroundings offer plenty to keep visitors busy for several days.

• Visiting the equator is super fun. At Museo Intiñan, you can try experiments such as balancing an egg on the head of a nail, trying to keep your balance while walking on the equator, pouring water down the drain in each hemisphere (it spins in a different direction in each hemisphere), and many more. 
• A more formal monument and park are located near the museum. Stand with a leg in each hemisphere and enjoy the surrounding parks at Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, the Middle of the World. 
• Don’t miss the markets in Quito. They are colorful and interesting, offering local artisan goods, produce, a unique meal, and daily necessities.
• El Panecillo Hill overlooks the city and is home to the stunning statue of La Virgen del Panecillo, who watches over it. You can see the monument from Old Town and enter the structure when you visit. The stained glass windows are impressive and worth the visit.
• The Historic City Center of Quito is not to be missed. It was the first city to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and is filled with Spanish Colonial architecture and amazing cathedrals.
• Take the cable car up the mountain, which ascends to nearly 13,000 feet in 20 minutes. Once you’re on top, you can hike (if you’re not out of breath) or stop by the cafe.

Hot Tip:

Beware of the altitude when visiting Quito. The city is one of the highest capitals in the world, at an elevation of 9,350 feet (2,850 meters). Taking the cable car up the mountain will take you to an altitude of 12,943 feet (3,945 meters)!

Food To Try

• Encebollado de pescado is a delicious fish soup or stew that could be considered Ecuador’s national dish. It is made with onions, fresh fish, tomatoes, and spices and is served with plantain chips, corn nuts, and avocado. Locro de papa is another popular local soup made with potatoes and cheese and served with the same accompaniments.
• Like many South American cities, Quito is famous for its ceviche. However, it’s made differently here, more like a soup. Instead of hot peppers, sweet peppers are used, and additional ingredients can include plantain chips, popcorn (on the side), avocados, diced tomatoes, and roasted corn. It’s delicious.
• Street food in Ecuador can be tasty. Try a freshly baked empanada or fried plantain chips. Food vendors line the paths of all the city parks.
• Quito offers many options if you want to taste guinea pig (cuy), a traditional dish from the Andean region. It is best enjoyed at lunch, as it can become dry and chewy later in the day if not fresh. Broiled alpaca is also a popular local choice.
• Figs and cheese is a popular dessert that is very nice.

Bogotá, Colombia

Bogotá is one of my favorite South American cities. It’s a place to escape, treat myself, partake in an activity I wouldn’t do at home, and not spend a fortune.

There are many reasons to visit Bogotá, but let’s start with its unique climate. The weather is described as “eternal spring,” with temperatures consistently in the high 60s during the day and high 40s at night. Plus, there are always about 12 hours of daylight year-round.

Bogotá is a must on your travel list. Its pleasant climate, mountains, commitment to green spaces, vibrant old town, museums, and Latin culture will have you coming back for more.

Where To Stay Using Points

Hotel points go a long way in Bogotá, and there’s lodging for everyone, from budget travelers to businesspeople and the luxury-minded.

Marriott

Marriott has more than a dozen properties in Bogotá where you can use Marriott Bonvoy points for your stay. Here are a few possibilities:

The Aloft Bogota Airport, less than 10 minutes from the airport, should work well for a budget stay. The hotel has a complimentary shuttle, a free buffet breakfast, and rooms that start at just 12,000 Marriott Bonvoy points. Or, perhaps you’d prefer the full-service Sheraton Bogota Hotel, also with a free airport shuttle, and bookable from 16,000 points.

I have enjoyed several stays at the W Bogota in the Usaquén neighborhood. Marriott Bonvoy elites are treated well in this trendy, hip hotel, and its restaurant is one of my favorites. The hotel is bookable from 33,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Hilton

The Hilton Bogota is located in the city’s financial district, about 20 minutes from the city center. It offers full-service amenities, including an executive lounge. Rates start at 36,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

The Hilton Bogota Corferias, also located in the business district, has an indoor pool, fitness center, and 24-hour restaurant. Rooms can be booked for as few as 30,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

Hyatt

Hyatt has a nice presence in Bogotá. The popular Grand Hyatt Bogota is near the botanical gardens and U.S. Embassy and has easy access to central Bogotá. Rooms at this Category 3 property start at 9,000 World of Hyatt points per night.

The Hyatt Place Bogota/Convention Center offers affordable lodging without sacrificing comfort. Off-peak rates for this Category 1 hotel start at 3,500 World of Hyatt points per night.

IHG

IHG has several properties in Bogotá. The Holiday Inn Express Bogota – Parque LA 93, located near the major embassies, shopping, and Parque de la 93, is bookable from 15,000 IHG One Rewards points.

The Holiday Inn Express & Suites Bogota DC is geared toward the business traveler and is situated in the financial district. Rooms start at 14,000 IHG One Rewards points per night.

The Holiday Inn Bogota Airport offers a free airport shuttle and is just 10 minutes from the airport. Rates begin at 14,000 IHG One Rewards points per night.

Things To Do

Bogotá is a large, cosmopolitan city with plenty to see and do, both within the city limits and just outside them.

• Taking the cable car up Monserrate near the city center is a must-do in Bogotá. At the top of the mountain, you can visit the basilica, grab a bite to eat, go on a nature hike, shop, and watch the sunset. 
• If you like beer and explosions, you’ll enjoy tejo, a traditional Colombian sport. Visit a bar that offers tejo, buy beer, and throw metal discs at targets filled with gunpowder. What could go wrong? You can also book a small group tejo and beer tour through Viator.
• Take in a couple of museums. The Museo Botero showcases Fernando Botero’s art. You know, those roly-poly-esque figures we love! Also, don’t miss Museo del Oro for its incredible collection of pre-Colombian gold. These are 2 of my favorites.
• Barrio La Candelaria is a neighborhood in the heart of old Bogotá and a fascinating area to explore on foot. It’s rough around the edges but full of amazing street art and murals, the expansive Plaza de Bolivar, and the main Cathedral. Plus, you’ll find plenty of great places to eat.
• The Zipaquira Salt Cathedrals are just a vintage steam train ride from Bogotá. The train is a fun ride, complete with live music. Carved from the underground salt mines, the cathedrals are a spectacular sight and worth the trip.
• Pamper yourself. Back in the city, Bogotá is the perfect place to pamper yourself. A combination pedicure/manicure costs less than $20, and spa treatments are a fraction of what they cost at home in the U.S. My Russian 1-hour pedicure was just $11.

Food To Try

Bogotá is a food-lover’s dream city. Delicious food is easy to find and affordable. Here are some ideas for what to eat and where to go.

• Find traditional local food at Tolú (Mamá Luz) in the La Perseverance Market Square. Empanadas and ceviche are popular items, but the ajiaco (a hearty chicken and potato soup) is said to be the best.
• Speaking of ceviche, in the Usaquén area of Bogotá, a friend turned me on to La Mar. The ceviche at La Mar is worth revisiting again and again. Usaquén has a fun atmosphere and is laden with great places to eat.
• Head outside the city to visit Andrés Carne De Res in Chia. The place is over-the-top crazy, but the food is very good. Octopus, steak, fish, or whatever you have will be delightful and presented in a quirky, fun way. You’ll laugh the whole time you’re there. It’s a popular spot for flight attendants, we even saw ours there.

Final Thoughts

South America is a large continent with many great cities to explore. Mendoza, Quito, and Bogotá are 3 of my favorites. As I visit more destinations, I may have three more.

A key reason to consider adding South American destinations to your travel list is the elevated value possible when using points and miles for most South American cities.
