How the Fairmont Vancouver Airport Turned My Layover Into Luxury: A Full Review

In June 2026, I flew from Taipei, Taiwan, to Washington, D.C. With such a long distance between the cities, and wanting to try to avoid as much jet lag as possible, I figured a stop in Vancouver, Canada, was a great way to break up the journey.

I needed a very convenient hotel, since I was arriving late in the day and leaving the next morning, and there was no better hotel than Fairmont Vancouver Airport. Right in the terminal of Vancouver International Airport (YVR) itself, it’s a luxury hotel with an unbeatable location, and is now one of my favorite airport hotels worldwide. 

Booking Fairmont Vancouver Airport

Fairmont is one of Accor‘s higher-end brands and is considered to be one of the most luxurious options. It’s unusual for such a brand to be an airport hotel, but Fairmont hotels have a heavy presence in Canada.

Fairmont Vancouver Airport is not a cheap hotel by any means. Because it’s the only hotel actually at the airport, rates tend to be much higher than at surrounding hotels. To make matters worse, my 1-night layover in Vancouver coincided with a nearby FIFA World Cup match, causing rates to spike throughout the entire city. Not knowing about the match, I booked my flights first and then decided to book the hotel, which was a huge mistake.

When I first looked, rates were around $1,500 a night. Yes, that’s for a run-of-the-mill king room with no extra features. I’ve paid really extreme rates before, but that’s just astronomical. Fortunately, a few weeks before my arrival, thanks to anemic FIFA World Cup ticket sales, hotel rates had dropped to a much more palatable $334 a night, which was fully cancelable.

Wanting to save even more, I applied 12,000 ALL – Accor Live Limitless Reward points to the total (each Reward point is worth around 2.3 cents), bringing my grand total to be paid at the hotel to just $94. I thought this was a fantastic deal, and to make things better, the rate that included breakfast was the same as the one that didn’t, so naturally, I booked the one that did. For the remaining balance, I used my Chase Sapphire Reserve^®, which earns 4x Ultimate Rewards points at hotels.

The hotel is not bookable on any major credit card luxury hotel portal, so the best way to save is to redeem Reward points.

Benefits of ALL Elite Status

As an ALL Gold member, I was upgraded from a basic Fairmont King room to a Deluxe King overlooking the entire airport. In my limited experience staying at Fairmont hotels, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the upgrades I’ve received (such as my last upgrade at the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac).

My Deluxe King Room Had Stunning Airport Views

I’m a sucker for a really good airport hotel with views of the terminal and runways, like the one at the Grand Hyatt DFW. The Fairmont Vancouver Airport is one of the best hotels with an airport view I’ve ever stayed at. If you’re someone who likes to spot planes or just see all the incoming and departing aircraft, this hotel is a dream come true.

I was upgraded to a corner airport-view room at no extra charge due to my ALL Gold status.

The hotel itself mostly looked down on the terminal where the U.S. flights departed from, so if you’re looking to see larger planes or aircraft headed overseas, you need to look out to the left toward the other half of the airport. Nonetheless, there was lots to see, and because one of the main airport runways was parallel to the hotel, I saw some of my favorite planes land all throughout the day.

As I entered the room, I had a small foyer and then a bathroom off to the right, accessible through 2 doors. It was an elongated bathroom set in the middle of the room, so the footprint was different from that in other hotels. Inside the bathroom were a large vanity, a toilet, a soaking tub, and a separate shower.

In the main part of the room, there was a large luggage rack off to the left, perfect for my large checked bag. To the right was a king bed, flanked by 2 nightstands with several power outlets. 

Further into the room was a desk, again equipped with several power outlets, which was much appreciated, as I had to charge several devices after such a long flight. In the corner was a single sitting chair. On the table was a welcome amenity from the hotel: a bottle of water and a plate of macarons.

The room certainly felt upscale for an airport hotel, but not as refined as you’d find in a true luxury hotel like a Park Hyatt or Ritz-Carlton. The finishes felt dated but were well-maintained. Overall, I had no cleanliness issues or notable complaints.

The In-Terminal Location Cannot Be Beat

The Fairmont Vancouver Airport is just above the check-in desks for U.S. flights, so when you’re coming down the escalator from the lobby, you see Delta Air Lines, Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, American Airlines, and so on.

You can walk from the hotel and be at your airline’s ticket counter in less than a minute, making this hotel one of the best-located airport hotels I’ve stayed in. It’s especially useful if you have larger checked bags, since you don’t need to schlep them on a hotel shuttle or train.

If you’re flying to a destination other than the United States, your airline’s check-in counter is farther down the terminal but still very walkable from the hotel. 

Dining With a View

Globe @YVR, the hotel’s main restaurant in the lobby, is just beyond the front desk and has live music nightly around the bar area. The restaurant and bar area were hopping when I checked in around 8 p.m., with lots of travelers grabbing a drink and watching the folk guitarist and singer. If you’ve got a long layover or if you get to the airport early before your flight, consider visiting the hotel’s restaurant to kill time. It seemed like there were lots of visitors and not just hotel guests.

The rate that I booked included breakfast for 2 guests (with an approximately $30-per-person credit), which I ordinarily would not have received with my ALL Gold status.

The breakfast menu was fairly extensive, including egg dishes, pancakes, French toast, and several sides. For my credit, I had a green juice, a coffee, a yogurt bowl, and an English muffin. 

The yogurt bowl with berries was enormous and was enough to fill me up on its own. The green juice was disappointing, however, as it had almost no sweetness and was filled with lots of shredded leaves that had not been blended well.

Room Service

On the night of my arrival, I ordered room service for around $50 total: a club sandwich, hummus, and carrot cake. While everything was tasty and filling, the hummus did not come with many pieces of pita, leaving me with a considerable amount of dip. Fortunately, the view out of my hotel room window made the dining experience perfect.

The Amenities Were Well-Equipped

The Fairmont Vancouver Airport has both a state-of-the-art fitness center and pool, both just off of the lobby.

During my visit, the fitness center was busy, even later into the evening. I found a variety of cardio and strength training machines, and the facility was open 24 hours a day.

Just down the hall from the fitness center was the hotel’s pool and Jacuzzi. A few kids were splashing around when I walked in, though I could imagine this space got pretty busy in the morning and evening as travelers look to relax before and after flights. The pool was open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

The hotel did not offer a spa facility or other amenities.

Final Thoughts

Fairmont Vancouver Airport is one of the best-located airport hotels I’ve ever stayed at, and it’s absolutely perfect before a next-day flight or if you’re arriving and are too tired to head into the city. With a great breakfast, rooms with sweeping views over the runways, and a minimal walk to the check-in desks, the Fairmont Vancouver Airport is a hotel I wouldn’t hesitate to stay in again if I were transiting through the area.
