Key Takeaways

  • Hyatt Globalist members enjoy exclusive suite upgrade awards, allowing them to confirm suite accommodations at the time of booking.
  • You can earn suite upgrades when you hit certain qualifying night milestones and an additional 4 if you are a World of Hyatt lifetime Globalist member.
  • To get the most out of your suite upgrade make sure to utilize it when booking 7 consecutive nights.

One of the biggest perks of the World of Hyatt loyalty program is the ability to earn suite upgrade awards. And while other hotel loyalty programs offer upgrades to suites, there aren’t very many that do it reliably.

World of Hyatt has gone against the grain here by offering suite upgrade awards that enable you to confirm upgrades at the time of booking!

In this guide, we’ll be walking you through every single facet of suite upgrade awards, including some of the best ways to use these suite upgrade awards!

What Are Hyatt Suite Upgrade Awards?

Park Hyatt Tokyo Suite
Park Hyatt Tokyo Suite. Image Credit: Hyatt

World of Hyatt offers a unique achievement-based program called Milestone Rewards. If you hit certain thresholds of elite nights or base points in a calendar year, you’ll receive perks depending on which exact threshold you hit.

Suite upgrade awards are one of the most coveted perks you can get from Milestone Rewards. Suite upgrade awards allow you to confirm an upgrade at the time of booking to a standard suite on a stay of up to 7 nights when booking an eligible rate!

This is also in addition to the standard suite upgrades available to World of Hyatt Globalist members that are subject to availability at the time of check-in.

Basically, Hyatt suite upgrade rewards are powerful because they allow you to guarantee upgrades to standard suites as soon as you book your reservation!

How Do I Earn Hyatt Suite Upgrade Awards?

As we mentioned above, Hyatt suite upgrade awards are a benefit that you’re eligible to earn under the Milestone Rewards program.

If you’re one of the few that can earn at least 40+ elite qualifying nights or 65,000+ base Hyatt points every calendar year, you are eligible to earn suite upgrade awards.

You will earn suite upgrade awards under this structure:

  • You can choose 1 suite upgrade as a Milestone Reward once you reach 40 nights.
  • You can choose 2 suite upgrade awards once you reach 50 nights.
  • You’ll automatically get 2 suite upgrade awards when you reach 60 nights.
  • You’ll be able to choose 1 suite upgrade award at 70 nights and then again every 10 nights until 150 nights.

As a reminder, you will earn 4 more suite upgrade awards every year if you’re a World of Hyatt lifetime Globalist member.

Hot Tip: You can al earn elite nights as a benefit of spending on The World of Hyatt Credit Card or the World of Hyatt Business Credit Card.

How Do I Redeem Hyatt Suite Upgrade Awards?

So, now that we’ve outlined what suite upgrade awards are and how you can earn them, let’s discuss how you can use them!

What Hotels and Rates Can You Redeem Suite Upgrade Awards At?

We mentioned above that suite upgrade awards can be used on eligible rates only, and this might make you nervous, but it’s actually a lot simpler than you think.

Suite upgrade awards can be used for any paid rate eligible, including Hyatt Privé rates and any points redemptions rates. Unfortunately, you can’t use suite upgrade awards on stays booked with free night certificates.

According to the official World of Hyatt terms and conditions, you can redeem suite upgrade awards at any World of Hyatt property except:

How Do I Check Suite Upgrade Award Availability?

So you’ve checked that the property you’re thinking of redeeming a suite upgrade award at isn’t on the list above, and you’re ready to check availability. How do you go about this?

Well, it’s super easy!

As long as there’s a revenue (paid) rate available in a suite that has specific language in the room description, you are eligible to redeem a suite upgrade award for this room!

Specifically, the room type must have the sentence, “This is a standard suite” to qualify for suite upgrade awards.

As long as there is a standard suite showing up in the search, you should be able to use a suite upgrade award to confirm that suite. Check out the example of an eligible suite upgrade at the Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme:

Park Suite at Park Hyatt Paris Vendome
Eligible suites you can upgrade to will have specific language on the search results screen. Image Credit: Hyatt

As long as you see a standard suite available in your Hyatt search, you can use your suite upgrade award to confirm it!

What Kind of Suites Can I Get?

Every hotel sorts its rooms into different categories. Some properties may have 3 suites that qualify as standard suites, while other properties may only have 1 suite that qualifies as a standard suite.

Suite upgrade awards can be used to confirm an upgrade into a standard suite only, but if you have Globalist status, there’s a possibility to get double-upgraded into a premium suite. This just depends on the availability and is at the hotel’s discretion at the time of check-in.

Remember, most hotels will list standard suites under the applicable suite’s description and say “This is a standard suite.” In some situations, you need to call World of Hyatt because a particular hotel might not have this language under its suite descriptions.

Sadly, premium suites are not confirmable using suite upgrade awards. That’s not to say you have no chance of getting upgraded to a premium suite — it’s just not guaranteed.

How Long Can I Stay With Suite Upgrade Awards?

Suite upgrade awards are valid for a stay of up to 7 consecutive nights at 1 property.

That means that if you have 7 nights worth of accommodation in a property, but it’s split up across 2 reservations, you would have to apply 2 suite upgrade awards to cover the 2 reservations.

Also, if you have a reservation for more than 7 nights, you wouldn’t be able to apply a suite upgrade award to this reservation. You’d have to split up the reservations and apply suite upgrade awards for each reservation of up to 7 nights.

How Do I Use a Suite Upgrade Award?

You can’t actually redeem a suite upgrade award online — instead, you have 3 main ways to use a suite upgrade award:

  1. Over the phone by calling World of Hyatt at 800-544-9288
  2. Via Twitter (@HyattConcierge or @Hyatt) Direct Message
  3. Via your Globalist Concierge

When Do Suite Upgrade Awards Expire?

Suite upgrade awards have quite a generous expiration period, but the way the expiration period is calculated is slightly different.

If you earn suite upgrade awards in a given year, they are valid for the rest of the year in which you earned them plus another 14 months.

For example, if you earn suite upgrade awards in November 2023, they would be valid through 2024, and then another 14 months through to February 28, 2025. If you earned the suite upgrade awards in April 2023, they would still be valid through February 28, 2025.

Also, the expiration date is when the stay must be completed, instead of the suite upgrade award being booked. So, you’ll want to make sure that your check-out date is before the expiration.

So if your suite upgrade awards will expire on February 28, 2025, you can only use them on stays that will be completed before February 28, 2025.

Best Ways to Maximize Suite Upgrade Awards

Park Hyatt Bangkok suite
Park Hyatt Bangkok Suite. Image Credit: Hyatt

There are many different considerations you need to keep in mind when you’re trying to maximize suite upgrade awards because the value you get from them may vary depending on how you use these suite upgrade awards.

Some questions you need to ask yourself are:

  • Is this better to use it at a city hotel or a resort?
  • How many nights am I going to stay in the hotel?
  • How much time would I spend in the suite anyway?
  • How good are the suites I’d be staying in at the hotel?

If you don’t plan on spending much time in your room/suite, it might be worth saving your suite upgrade awards for a stay at a resort, for instance, where you expect to spend a lot of time in the property.

Also, you’d probably be missing out on significant value if you used a suite upgrade award for a 1-night stay since these are good for stays of up to 7 consecutive nights.

Also, some properties have lackluster standard suites (referred to as junior suites), while other properties have legitimate suites that are a real upgrade over standard rooms.

In the rest of this guide, we’ll be focusing on the top properties you can redeem suite upgrade awards at!

Park Hyatt Shanghai (China)

The Park Hyatt Shanghai is an extravagant luxury high-rise hotel in the heart of China’s mega-hub. And even though the standard rooms are excellent, using a suite upgrade award here is a fantastic choice.

Whereas a standard room measures around 600 square feet, you can redeem suite upgrade awards to access a room that’s more than double the size!

The property’s luxurious standard suites are 1,400 square feet in size and they come with plush king beds, master bathrooms with walk-in rain showers and separate deep soaking tubs, twin vanities, separate sitting areas with a daybed, and more!

Park Hyatt Shanghai is one of the few properties where you can snag a premium suite with a suite upgrade award, which is why it’s at the top of our list!

The Bund View Suite is the highest-level suite, and it happens to be a premium suite. This space offers incredible views of Shanghai’s iconic skyline and has a massive living room with couches, armchairs, and coffee and tea facilities.

Here are all the suites you can redeem upgrade awards for:

Switzerland is a notoriously expensive destination. If you have the chance to stay at a contemporary property like Park Hyatt Zurich in Switzerland, you’ll savor luxury throughout your stay.

Why not elevate it even more by redeeming a suite upgrade award? Normally, standard rooms measure less than 400 square feet, which is still spacious by Zurich standards.

Regardless of which room you’re in, you’ll enjoy floor-to-ceiling windows, Carrara marble finishes in your elegant bathroom, a deep-soaking bathtub, a separate walk-in rain shower, and more.

If you redeem a suite upgrade award, you can double the amount of real estate you’re entitled to during your stay. You can get a suite with a Bang & Olufsen hi-fi system, an extra guest bathroom, sleek contemporary European furniture, and carefully selected art.

Here are all the suites you can redeem upgrade awards for:

  • Park King Suite (775 square feet)
  • Park Junior Suite (581 square feet)

You will not get access to complimentary breakfast unless you’re booking a revenue (paid) rate, so points bookings won’t be eligible, sadly.

With limestone walls, deep-soaking tubs, Christophe Laudamiel toiletries, and design elements by Ed Tuttle, it’s easy to see how this property commands upwards of $1,000 per night!

Rooms in Paris are petite, so the standard room rate gets you around 280 to 323 square feet of space. If you use a suite upgrade award, you can increase that up to 431 to 484 square feet.

Importantly, you’ll enjoy more seating areas, a fireplace, a larger bathroom, a balcony, and exquisite décor.

Final Thoughts

World of Hyatt’s suite upgrade awards are one of the most valuable benefits a top-tier member can earn.

Between the ability to confirm an upgrade to a standard suite at the time of booking and the ability to use a suite upgrade award for a stay of up to 7 consecutive nights, there’s a lot to love about suite upgrade awards.

It’s fairly straightforward to earn suite upgrade awards, and of course, you could potentially also stack your Globalist upgrade benefit to double-upgrade, though this is subject to the hotel’s discretion.

Nonetheless, using the awards is fairly easy, even though it might be slightly inconvenient to call World of Hyatt customer service, reach out to them via Twitter, or call your Globalist Concierge.

We also highlighted some of the top ways you can maximize suite upgrade awards, which we hope you found inspiring and useful!
