After a wonderful 5 days in Cape Town, South Africa, during which I stayed with a friend, I had 1 night to myself and wanted to relax at a hotel. Fortunately, Cape Town has several great hotels to choose from.

After narrowing down my options, I opted for the 5-star Hyatt Regency Cape Town, one of 2 World of Hyatt properties in the city (the other being a much more expensive Mr & Mrs Smith hotel). Fortunately, the Hyatt Regency is a Category 1 hotel, meaning I did not need many points to book an award.

Here’s a look at my August 2025 stay and what you should know if you’re considering staying at the Hyatt Regency Cape Town.

1. You Can Redeem Hyatt Points for Fantastic Value

The Hyatt Regency Cape Town is part of the World of Hyatt loyalty program, meaning that you can redeem World of Hyatt points for stays at the property. Hyatt has a published award chart for award redemptions, with pricing depending on whether your stay falls during peak, standard, or off-peak availability.

As a Category 1 World of Hyatt property, award nights can be booked for 3,500 points per night (off-peak), 5,000 points per night (standard), or 6,500 points per night (peak).

The points calendar closely reflects travel seasons, as peak travel months are almost always 6,500 World of Hyatt points per night. However, in non-peak travel months, there are several weeks where award nights can be booked for just 3,500 points.

Hotel cash rates often exceed $200 per night, meaning you can consistently get more than 3 cents per point in value. This is an incredible rate, considering we value World of Hyatt points at 1.5 cents apiece.

2. It’s in a Great Location

The Hyatt Regency Cape Town is in the Bo-Kaap neighborhood, on the slopes of Signal Hill, just above Cape Town’s city center.

Bo-Kaap is best known for its vibrantly colored houses and its history as the home of the Cape Malay people, who were primarily slaves and political exiles brought by the Dutch from Southeast Asia and East Africa during colonial times. It is one of the city’s oldest residential areas.

The property is less than a 20-minute walk from several of Cape Town’s most prominent attractions, including the Museum of Illusions Cape Town, Iziko South African Museum, South African Jewish Museum, South African National Gallery, Castle of Good Hope, and the District Six Museum.

Many other tourist sites, including the V&A Waterfront, the Cape Town International Convention Centre, and DHL Stadium, are a short Uber ride from the property. Meanwhile, Cape Town International Airport (CPT) is about a 20-minute ride from the hotel.

3. Don’t Expect a Traditional Regency Club Lounge

Hyatt Regency is best known as a “business and leisure hybrid” brand catering to people traveling for both work and pleasure. Guests can typically find a full range of amenities, including food and drink options, a fitness center, workspaces, and business centers.

Many Hyatt Regency properties worldwide also offer a Regency Club, a club lounge designed for greater comfort, privacy, and complimentary food and beverage (like breakfast or all-day refreshments and snacks). In fact, a Regency Club is arguably the most important aspect of the Hyatt Regency brand.

Unfortunately, the Hyatt Regency Cape Town does not have a traditional Regency Club. Instead, the property allows those with World of Hyatt Globalist status and those who booked rooms with Regency Club access to an evening event with appetizers and drinks at Urchin Restaurant daily between 5 and 7 p.m.

Unfortunately, the food at the evening event was nothing to write home about.

Many Hyatt properties allow guests to book rooms with Regency Club access, and the Hyatt Regency Cape Town offered the same. Since I no longer have World of Hyatt Globalist status, I booked a room with Regency Club access for 2,000 additional World of Hyatt points.

With this booking, I could attend the evening event at Urchin Restaurant and have breakfast in the morning at 126 Cape Kitchen and Café.

4. There Are Numerous On-Site Amenities

Although the property does not have a true Regency Club Lounge, the Hyatt Regency Cape Town offers plenty of amenities. This includes a fully equipped fitness center, an outdoor rooftop swimming pool, a sauna, a steam room, a business center, meeting facilities, and even a barber shop.

Although it was a bit chilly outside, I took a quick dip in the pool and sat on the deck to get some work done, which was a nice way to relax.

5. You’ll Encounter Diverse Dining

The Hyatt Regency Cape Town has several on-site dining outlets serving everything from light bites and mocktails to fine dining. Here’s what’s on offer.

Urchin Restaurant

Urchin Restaurant is the property’s fine dining venue specializing in fresh seafood.

126 Cape Kitchen and Café

The hotel’s other main restaurant is the Halal-certified 126 Cape Kitchen and Café, specializing in traditional Cape Malay cuisine. I had breakfast at 126 Cape Kitchen and Café and was pleasantly surprised by the fantastic breakfast experience. The service was excellent and there was a good selection of food available.

Pool Deck at Signal Hill Terrace

Pool Deck at Signal Hill Terrace is the property’s rooftop bar, serving drinks (including alcohol) and light snacks. As the name suggests, the venue is located near the pool.

Dos-Tea

Dos-Tea is the hotel’s cafe, located in the lobby. The menu features an extensive selection of coffees, teas, pastries, sandwiches, and snacks. I ordered a lemongrass and ginger citrus frizz tea mocktail and was pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was.

Final Thoughts

The Hyatt Regency Cape Town is a solid property in an excellent location in the Bo-Kaap neighborhood. It provides fantastic value, particularly when redeeming World of Hyatt points. The hotel is a Category 1 property, meaning that it can be booked for as few as 3,500 Hyatt points.

Although the property does not have a traditional Regency Club, it offers several amenities and on-site dining venues. This hotel deserves consideration from anyone visiting Cape Town in the future.
