If you prefer a slower travel pace, you’ll love the experience we’re sharing today.

Traveling by ferry in the Nordic countries offers a convenient and pleasant alternative to flying between cities or driving. One of my favorites is an inspirational journey on the waterways from Oslo, Norway, to Copenhagen, Denmark.

The voyage is an example of an easy-to-plan trip that can be rewarding and memorable. I’ll give you a basic overview, and then you can customize the experience to suit your travel preferences.

Here are all the reasons to book the Oslo-to-Copenhagen ferry experience, including the opportunity to use your points and miles along the way.

1. Traveling by Ferry in the Nordic Countries Is Scenic and Enjoyable

While ferries can be a reliable form of transportation throughout the Nordic countries, the vessels are also a pleasant way to travel. Traversing the archipelagos, coastlines, and fjords is an incredibly scenic and relaxing experience.

View from Go Nordic Ferry Leaving Oslo
View from the ferry, leaving Oslo harbor.

Taking an overnight ferry is particularly special and feels more like a holiday than just a means of transportation. And, everything you need is on board, so you can relax and enjoy the journey.

The focus of today’s article is on a specific ferry route between Oslo and Copenhagen. Go Nordic Cruiseline has been servicing the route since it was purchased from the DFDS ferry company.

The route wanders through the archipelagos of Norway as it leaves the port of Oslo and hugs the coastlines of Sweden and Denmark before reaching Copenhagen. The views are stunning, and since you never traverse the open seas, the voyage can be much smoother than an ocean voyage.

Hot Tip:

For an excellent preview of what to expect on the Go Nordic ferry (formerly serviced by DFDS) from Oslo to Copenhagen, this video by Steve Marsh provides an engaging overview and is quite entertaining.

2. Ease of Logistics at Airport, City Center, Hotels, and Ferry Terminals

One of the top reasons to book the ferry experience between Oslo and Copenhagen is the ease of planning the trip. Anyone can easily book and participate in this fun adventure.

Copenhagen Central Station
Copenhagen Central Station offers convenient access to the airport and the city center.

An element that contributes to the ease of planning this trip is that the ferry terminals in Oslo and Copenhagen are conveniently near the city centers. The logistics of navigation are thus diminished.

You can fly into Oslo (OSL) and return from Copenhagen (CPH) or fly into Copenhagen and return from Oslo. You can also take the ferry round-trip from either city, ending where you began. Once you’ve worked out the flights (we’ll discuss using points and miles for these shortly) and checked the ferry schedule, planning your transport between the airport, city center, hotel, and ferry terminals is a breeze.

  • From Oslo Airport to Oslo city center: The VY train station, which is within the airport, offers an efficient and affordable way to reach Oslo Central Station, with a travel time of just 20 minutes.
  • From Oslo city center to the hotel: There are dozens of hotels within walking distance of Oslo Central Station. We’ll share some ideas shortly.
  • From your Oslo hotel to the Oslo ferry terminal: The Go Nordic Cruiseline ferry terminal is a 15-minute walk from Oslo Central Station and even closer to some hotels.
Go Nordic Cruiseline Terminal Oslo
The Oslo ferry terminal is within walking distance of central Oslo.

Once you’ve arrived in Copenhagen, you’ll find that getting around is just as easy as in Oslo.

  • Copenhagen ferry terminal to the city center: The Go Nordic Cruiseline ferry provides a shuttle from the ferry dock to Copenhagen Central Station (and vice versa). The cost is €5 (around $6) and it can be booked on board the ferry, at the Oslo or Copenhagen ferry terminal desk at check-in, or during your online booking.
  • Copenhagen city center to your hotel: There are many hotels within walking distance of Copenhagen Central Station.
  • Hotel to Copenhagen Airport: The direct train from Copenhagen Central Station takes 15 minutes. Alternatively, you can take the Metro, as it also serves the airport.

Overwhelming logistics won’t get in the way of planning the Oslo to Copenhagen ferry experience.

3. It’s Affordable

A cabin on the Go Nordic Cruiseline ferry is not expensive. You pay a fixed price for the entire cabin, not per person. In this example, an inside, 2-bed cabin starts at €49 (around $58) and a sea-view cabin at €105 (around $123). And that’s the price for 2 travelers!

The journey takes between 17 and 19 hours. The ferry leaves Oslo harbor at 4:30 p.m. and arrives in Copenhagen at around 10 a.m. the next morning. The price includes your cabin and your ferry ride.

Book DFDS Ferry

Pricing can vary widely by date, so it’s best to book early to secure the type of room and bed configuration you prefer. Cabins feature private bathrooms, a small desk area, and either bunk beds or lower beds.

You can prepurchase meals during the booking process, but you can also bring your own food on board. You can book roomier premium cabins, called Commodore cabins, which include breakfast, Wi-Fi, and other amenities such as a Jacuzzi, a balcony, or an additional sofa bed.

Pets, bikes, and vehicles incur extra costs.

4. Onboard Experience

It’s good to know the amenities you’ll find on board during your voyage, and there are more than you would expect. The boat is more like a small cruise ship than a ferry for transit.

You’ll be sailing on either the Nordic Pearl (705 cabins) or the Nordic Crown (620 cabins). On board, you’ll find restaurants, cafes, a large duty-free store, a swimming pool, a hot tub, and a children’s play and entertainment area. There are also lounges and live entertainment available.

Go Nordic Cruiseline Deck
Enjoying live music on the deck as we leave Oslo harbor.

To give you an idea of pricing, a pizza at the Italian restaurant costs approximately $24, a ham and Swiss sandwich at the cafe is around $9, and a 24-hour Wi-Fi pass is roughly $18. Any food you purchase at the duty-free shop can be consumed on board.

Food packages can be purchased during the booking process. Breakfast is included with the purchase of a premium Commodore cabin.

There’s also a hot water station. This can come in handy for many reasons, especially for making yourself a coffee before the cafe opens at 7 a.m. (a discovery I was thankful for).

Go Nordic Cruiseline Cabin
The standard sea-view cabin was very comfortable.

The 2-bed standard sea-view cabin (with 2 additional bunk beds that fold down) was cozy but with adequate space, a small desk, and a bathroom with a shower. And it came at a price equivalent to that of a hotel room in either Oslo or Copenhagen.

5. You Can Travel to Oslo or Copenhagen Using Points or Miles

Oslo and Copenhagen are 2 cities with a plentitude of international flight access.

  • Redeem 40,000 Air Canada Aeroplan points to fly United or Lufthansa from Newark (EWR) or Washington Dulles (IAD) to Copenhagen one-way in economy. You can fly in business class for 70,000 Aeroplan points each way.
  • Redeem 53,000 Air France-KLM Flying Blue miles to fly KLM from Chicago O’Hare (ORD) to Oslo or Copenhagen, one-way in business class. Also, watch for Flying Blue Promo Rewards to score the best deals.
  • Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has hubs in Oslo and Copenhagen. Search for award flights to major European cities, such as Berlin (BER), London (LHR), Madrid (MAD), Paris (CDG), and Rome (FCO). Then hop on a flight from there to Oslo or Copenhagen with SAS to begin your ferry experience.

Additionally, Scandinavian Airlines offers excellent value with its frequent sales on premium economy flights to Oslo and Copenhagen. Here are all the reasons to love its premium economy product.

If you book the ferry one-way, you need to book an open-jaw flight. This means you fly into one city, such as Oslo, and return from the other, in this case, Copenhagen.

The above suggestions are random picks from Seats.aero. Taxes and fees are additional.

Earning transferable points is one of the best ways to score affordable flights. We prefer earning American Express Membership Rewards points or Chase Ultimate Rewards points, as they can be transferred to airline and hotel programs. Once they’re transferred, you can book award flights or free hotel nights.

6. Book Hotels With Hotel Loyalty Points

The cities of Oslo and Copenhagen are ideal for utilizing hotel loyalty points, as they offer a wide range of hotels from which to choose.

Of course, you’ll want a hotel with access to the ferry terminal, so we’ll include hotels that offer this convenience.

Oslo

The Go Nordic Cruiseline terminal is a 15-minute walk (or 3-minute taxi ride) from Oslo Central Station, so any hotel near the station also keeps you within walking distance of the terminal.

Choice Home Hotel Bastion Oslo Norway
Home Hotel Bastion in Oslo.

Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, and IHG do not have properties in central Oslo near the Central Station. Choice Hotels is your go-to for booking hotels in Oslo with Choice Privileges loyalty points. There are 29 Choice Hotels properties in the city, so there will be plenty of options.

Here are some examples of Choice properties near the ferry terminal that you can book with points:

Home Hotel Bastion is one of the closest hotels to the ferry terminal, within a 10-minute walk. The hotel includes breakfast, fika (the afternoon coffee-and-pastries break), and dinner. The hotel, with its comfy charm, is just a block from the harbor and a 10-minute walk from the central station. Rooms can be booked from 15,000 Choice Privileges points per night.

Comfort Hotel Boersparken is another central hotel within a 10-minute walk of the Central Station and the ferry terminal. Breakfast is included, and all the city’s sites are right outside your door. Rooms can be booked for 15,000 Choice Privileges points per night.

The city center is at your doorstep if you stay at the Comfort Hotel Grand Central. The hotel is inside Oslo Central Station and couldn’t be more convenient. The hotel has modern rooms, a fitness center, and complimentary Wi-Fi, and breakfast is included. The ferry terminal is a 15-minute walk along the water. You can book rooms for 15,000 Choice Privileges points per night.

Choice Privileges points are easy to acquire. Citi ThankYou Points earned on the Citi Strata Elite℠ Card and Citi Strata Premier℠ Card transfer at the rate of 1 ThankYou Point to 2 Choice Privileges points. Wells Fargo Rewards points earned on the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card and Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Card also transfer at the rate of 1 Wells Fargo Rewards point to 2 Choice Privileges points. American Express Membership Rewards points and Capital One miles transfer at a 1:1 ratio.

Even if you do not have a means of accumulating Choice Privileges points, the Choice Hotels listed are affordable for Oslo lodging.

Copenhagen

The cruise terminal is just outside the city, but Go Nordic Cruiseline offers a convenient shuttle service to and from Copenhagen Central Station. The shuttle bus also stops at Nørreport Station.

Comfort Hotel Vesterbro Copenhagen Denmark
Comfort Hotel Vesterbro in Copenhagen.

Here are some great options for using hotel loyalty points for booking hotels within walking distance of Copenhagen Central Station.

The deluxe, 5-star waterfront Copenhagen Marriott is a 5-minute walk from the Central Station and all that the city has to offer. Trivoli Park and Gardens, restaurants, and shopping are all nearby. This convenient hotel can be booked starting at 40,000 Marriott Bonvoy points.

If you don’t mind a 15-minute walk from Central Station, the Darling, a Mr & Mrs Smith adults-only boutique hotel, features 2 exclusively posh apartments offering historically unique surroundings. A butler, concierge, and chef are on call. And don’t forget to let them know your shoe size in advance to ensure your slippers fit perfectly. You can book rooms here from 67,500 World of Hyatt points.

If you have Choice Privileges points or can transfer points to the program, as mentioned previously, the Comfort Hotel Vesterbro is a good lodging near Copenhagen Central Station. The hotel is a 10-minute walk away, offers complimentary breakfast, and has a welcoming atmosphere. You’ll notice the fun and funky vibe that permeates the surroundings. You can book rooms for 15,000 Choice Privileges points.

Nimb Hotel, an SLH Hotel, can be booked with Hilton Honors points or a Hilton Honors free night certificate award. This luxurious hotel is in the heart of Trivoli Gardens, adjacent to Oslo Central Station. The hotel offers a unique, boutique, and intimate experience, along with excellent service. Standard rooms can be booked for 130,000 Hilton Honors points.

We appreciate that the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card comes with a complimentary night award certificate in the first year of card membership and at each card renewal. The card also offers complimentary top Hilton Honors Diamond elite status.

7. Visit Both Vibrant Cities in a Single Trip

Whether you fly into Oslo and take the ferry to Copenhagen or vice versa, you have the opportunity to explore 2 Nordic cities before and after your ferry experience.

Oslo Harbor
Taking a sauna and walking on the roof of the Oslo Opera House are musts for first-time visitors.

Here are some ideas for things to do while in these vibrant cities:

Oslo

  • Salt: Saunas are an integral part of Norwegian heritage and a must-do when in Oslo. Make it a fun experience on the waterfront at Salt, an entertainment venue, bar, restaurant, and sauna. You can walk to Salt from any of the hotels listed and from Central Station.
  • A cruise on Oslofjord: Oslo Harbor is beautiful, and the best way to view it is from the water. The vessels are quiet, relaxing, and clean.
  • Visit the Oslo Opera House: Near Central Station, this iconic building is worth touring or just walking along the rooftop for a fantastic city view.
  • Walk the city: Oslo is a relatively compact city, perfect for exploring on foot. During your walk, you can visit the Royal Palace, City Hall, Vigeland Park, Akershus Castle and Fortress, and Aker Brygge.

For more great ideas of things to do in Oslo, the Visit Oslo tourism site has plenty of details to assist you in planning an enjoyable visit.

Copenhagen

Copenhagen is stunning and filled with adventures. It is also a larger, more populated city than Oslo.

Nyhavn Canal Copenhagen Denmark
A stroll along Nyhavn Canal is a highlight of Copenhagen you don’t want to miss.
  • Nyhavn Canal: Pictured above, this popular area of the city is a photographer’s dream. The colorful buildings, boats, restaurants, and shops make it a must-see when visiting the city.
  • Tivoli Park and Gardens: One of the oldest amusement parks in the world (since 1843), the park and its lush gardens are treasures not to be missed in Copenhagen.
  • Freetown Christiania: A haven for free spirits, artists, and alternative lifestyles, the neighborhood is a unique commune where cars are not permitted and soft drugs are embraced. The colorful area is safe and worth visiting. Research the area before your visit.
  • Amalienborg Palace Museum and Rosenborg Castle: Visit the winter home of the royal family and see the changing of the guards. Climb the spiral staircase of the castle, home to the crown jewels. Copenhagen is filled with fascinating historical structures.

To discover more about these attractions and many more, the Visit Copenhagen website has a wealth of information.

Final Thoughts

Taking the Go Nordic Cruiseline ferry from Oslo to Copenhagen or the reverse is a memorable experience. Additionally, the journey is easy to plan and can be an affordable getaway.

Be sure to book your cabin well in advance to secure the type of cabin you prefer, as some can sell out.

Just a side note that drinking alcohol you bring on board is prohibited, but there tend to be many people bringing food and consuming it on board. The large duty-free shop offers a wide selection of snacks, specialty items, and bottled alcohol.
