Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX Hardside Luggage – Is It Worth It? [Video]

Samsonite was founded in 1910 and has grown to be the largest luggage manufacturer in the world. With around a 20% share in the luggage market, you’re sure to see many a Samsonite case rolling around with a trip to the airport.

Manufacturing such a wide collection of soft- and hard-sided luggage, it’s hard to know where to start with Samsonite. Today, we’re reviewing one of the brand’s most popular luggage collections — the Samsonite Winfield — and, more specifically, the 3 DLX version.

This hardside collection is incredibly versatile and would suit almost any travel situation. Maybe not a trek in the Andes, as you would likely want a backpack for that, but they work wonders on your standard trip for business or vacation. When we were testing this case, we were really impressed with its packability, with some clever features that we’ll cover later in this review.

The Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX range is available in 3 sizes, and for this particular review, we’re looking at the 25-inch medium case. As with all our luggage reviews, this case was purchased by Upgraded Points, so all opinions are our own.

Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX Hardside Luggage Style and Look

You won’t stand out too much with the Winfield 3 DLX range, as it has a fairly understated design. It also comes in a selection of traditional suitcase colors (blue, silver, emerald, and black, to name a few,) so again, nothing too striking. Having said that, we really like the curved corners that you often see on Samsonite cases, and the slight outer indentations give the case a sleek, modern look.

The wheels, trims, zips, and handles are all finished in traditional black, so it will disguise wear and tear well, and the indented Samsonite logo on the front of the case looks almost futuristic.

This case opens like a clamshell with 2 similar-sized packing compartments. Both sides of the case have open packing spaces with compression straps to hold your clothes in place.

Measuring 27 x 16.5 x 11.5 inches, this medium-checked case is large enough to pack a week’s worth of clothes. It’s a reasonably lightweight luggage range, with the medium case weighing 9.3 pounds. Its lightweight yet tough construction is what makes this luggage so appealing to those who want to pack more without exceeding the airline’s weight allowance. 

Our favorite feature of all was the interchangeable interior divider that could be clipped across either one of the packing compartments. Within the divider are 2 enclosed zippered pockets and 2 mesh pockets for holding smaller items.

If you haven’t exceeded your weight allowance, you might want to expand your case for up to 1.5 inches of extra packing room. This is particularly useful if you purchase additional items on vacation.

Polycarbonate is the strongest suitcase material available and is exactly what this case is made of. The material, combined with the scratch-resistant textured finish, will ensure this case looks the part for years to come. You can also tell that the materials used for the handles and wheels are also well-crafted and durable.

The 4 multi-directional spinner wheels are slightly recessed, providing a little protection for when the case is being thrown around by baggage handlers. They’re quiet and smooth rolling; however, these single-spinner wheels are not as balanced or responsive as double wheels. We felt this really let the case down.

Top and side handles on the exterior of the case are useful for grabbing it from the baggage carousel or out of the trunk of your car. These handles retract back into place when not in use to maintain a streamlined profile.

The handles themselves are not padded for comfort, but they do feel securely attached to the case and are durable to accommodate lifting a fully-packed suitcase.

The telescoping handle is adjustable to 2 heights using the button on the handle. It’s a solid handle that doesn’t rattle around when extended; however, the handle can get stuck and be difficult to retract. We think this is due to the telescopic handle button, as it really wasn’t that responsive.

It can be nerve-racking checking your case, not knowing whose hands it’s falling into behind the scenes. The Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX has an integrated TSA combination lock to secure the main compartment, giving you some peace of mind about its security.

With a 3-digit PIN, it’s easy to use, and you don’t have the worry of losing the key! However, you will need excellent eyesight to operate, as the number dials are tiny.

The double zippers are smooth-running and have easy-grip zipper pulls.

Samsonite Warranty and Customer Service

The Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX series has a limited 10-year global warranty, designed to safeguard against any defects in materials or craftsmanship. If you encounter any problems with your luggage, you can have it professionally repaired at any Samsonite-approved service center worldwide. It’s important to note that typical luggage warranties do not cover any damages sustained during air travel.
