Turkish Airlines Baggage Fees & Tips to Cover the Expenses

Turkish Airlines works on a weight system for certain international destinations and a piece system for others, so check out the list of destinations below before traveling so you know what you’re eligible for.

Journeys to and from the U.S. work on the piece system, and the checked allowance is 2 bags across economy and business classes (with a generous 32 kg for the latter).

If you join Turkish Airline’s frequent flyer program Miles&Smiles, you’ll be permitted to take an additional piece of checked luggage once you hit their Elite and Elite Plus statuses.

Turkish Airlines Carry-on Allowance

1 personal item: FREE
1 standard carry-on bag: Free for economy, child, and infant passengers
2 standard carry-on bags: Free for business class passengers

Size and Weight Restrictions

  • Personal: Undisclosed
  • Standard: 55 cm x 40 cm x 23 cm. Maximum weight for each item is 8 kg

Lap Infant Carry-on Policy

  • Baby food is permitted as a carry-on with a quantity that is sufficient for the journey.

Stroller Gate Check Policy

  • 1 collapsible stroller can be brought as additional baggage and must be checked into the hold at the gate.

International journeys that work on a piece allowance

This is applicable for flights to and from Angola, Argentina, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Canada, Chad, Colombia, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Japan, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Niger, Nigeria, Panama, Senegal, the Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South America, Sudan, the United States of America, and Venezuela.

Adult and child passengers are allowed to bring a maximum of 2 bags as free checked luggage with a maximum linear size of 158cm.

  • Business Class: 32 kg
  • Economy Class: 23 kg
  • Infant passenger: 1 bag with a max linear size of 115 cm and 1 stroller/pushchair

All other international journeys work on a weight allowance (no restrictions on number of pieces)

  • Business Class: 30 kg
  • Economy Class: 20 kg

Can I Pre-pay for Baggage?

Turkish Airlines does not allow passengers the ability to pre-pay for excess baggage.

Unfortunately, this means passengers must pay any excess baggage fees during the check-in process at the airport.

Excess baggage

For flights to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, excess baggage charges per kilo are:

  • Students: $0.50 USD
  • Military personnel part of the Turkish Peacekeeping Forces: $0.50 USD
  • Children: $0.50 USD

Excess checked baggage charges with Turkish Airlines depend on your flight route with destinations on the piece concept being charged $160 – $360 for an extra bag if you exceed your allowance. Destinations on the weight concept are charged $1.50 – $36 per kg if your baggage is overweight.

Does Turkish Airlines allow 2 bags?

Yes, 2 checked bags are permitted with Turkish Airlines if you’re flying to a destination that uses their piece concept (listed in article). If flying to a destination that uses a weight concept then there is no limit to how many bags you can bring – you are only restricted by a combined weight allowance.
