The Chase British Airways Visa Signature® Card just got a huge increase in its signup offer which matched its previous historic offer back in 2015. This offer has multiple bonuses for a tiered spending requirement.
You will earn 50,000 bonus Avios after you spend $3,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening, which is the regular offer most commonly seen for this card. You can earn an additional 25,000 bonus Avios after you spend a total of $10,000 in purchases within the first year of account opening and another additional 25,000 bonus Avios after you spend a total of $20,000 in purchases within that same year.
This offer has the potential to give you up to 100,000 bonus Avios after meeting the required tiered spending requirements. This card also comes with an annual fee of $95 starting with your first statement.
It is important to note that each required level of spending does include the previous spending requirements. Therefore, after completing the first $3,000 in spending, you only need to spend an additional $7,000 to reach the next level.
Another important thing to be aware of is that while this card does not fall under the 5/24 from Chase (more information here), you are not eligible for this card if you already have this card or have received a new cardmember bonus for this card in the past 24 months.
That means if you took advantage of this similar offer back in 2015 and have closed your account, you are probably eligible for this offer again.
This card is great for international travelers, since it comes with no foreign transaction fees and for those big spenders going after the full 100,000 bonus for spending $20,000 in the first year, you can also obtain a Travel Together Ticket for British Airways flights for spending a total of $30,000 in a single calendar year.
The Travel Together Ticket is valid for two years and applies when you redeem Avios for a flight on British Airways departing the U.S. for your companion to travel with you in on the same flight and in the same cabin (including first class) and all you have to do is pay the extra taxes, fees and carrier-imposed charges.
Be aware that the taxes, fees and carrier charges can be quite high on British Airways award flights.
In addition to these great spending offers, this card also offers 3 Avios per dollar spent on British Airways purchases and 1 Avios per dollar spent on all other purchases, making this a fantastic card for those who fly on British Airways often.
The British Airways Executive Club Avios award program can save you a ton of points when compared to other frequent flyer programs depending on your routing since award flights are distance based rather than based on regions.
Award flights on British Airways and their partner airlines start at just 4,500 Avios each way for short flights, but for U.S. domestic flights, award travel starts at 7,500 Avios for partner flights which include American Airlines and Alaska Airlines.
Hot Tip: Fly non-stop from the West Coast to Hawaii on British Airways partners American Airlines or Alaska Airlines for just 25,000 Avios roundtrip.
Another benefit of searching for flights using Avios is that there is an Avios + Cash option, where you can supplement your award booking with cash if you don’t have enough points in your account for the total number of points. While this probably won’t be an issue if you go for the full 100,000 point bonus, it’s good to keep in mind for the long term.
British Airways Avios also partners with some of the major credit card companies that offer transferable points, including American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and Starwood Preferred Guest, making it even easier to earn a ton of Avios points.
Since British Airways and Iberia Airlines, the national carrier of Spain, merged a few years ago and have a similar rewards program (they are both called Avios points) and it’s also possible to transfer your British Airways Avios to Iberia Airlines Avios. The benefit to that is that Iberia does not charge as much for carrier-imposed fees compared to British Airways.
There are plenty of options out there when looking for the best use of your British Airways Avios and all it takes is a bit of research on the sweet spots of the British Airways Executive Club reward program.
The Chase British Airways Visa Signature® card is perfect for people who fly British Airways often, especially if you are going after the Travel Together Ticket to use on premium cabin flights departing from the U.S. on British Airways.
Avios are also a fantastic award currency to have especially when looking for shorter distanced flights because sometimes those short flights can have a big price tag and that’s when Avios can really come in handy.
Overall, this card is currently offering the highest signup bonus we’ve seen but requires a lot of spending in order to reach the highest tiered bonus. Even if you’re unsure if you can meet the required minimum spend for the highest bonus, you can rest assured that the 50,000 bonus Avios after $3,000 in purchases is the most common offer for this card.
