American Express recently announced major changes to some of its Delta co-branded cards. Most of these changes come in the form of new bonus categories and statement credits. However, these benefits come at the cost of an increase in annual fees.

One particularly interesting change is the new statement credits for purchases at U.S. Resy restaurants.

Let’s look at how Resy works and what cards have the new Resy statement credits.

What Is Resy?

Resy is an online hospitality technology platform that allows users to discover and book some of the world’s best restaurants. Resy is a destination for restaurant discovery and booking all in one place.

You can use the Resy website or the Resy mobile app to make a reservation.

Delta Cards With Resy Statement Credits

The following cards now offer the ability to earn a monthly Resy statement credit:

Enrollment is required to be eligible to receive Resy statement credits.

According to the terms and conditions from American Express, “Eligible Resy purchases include purchases at U.S. restaurants that offer reservations on Resy.com and the Resy app, and purchases made directly on Resy.com or in the Resy app. Restaurants must be live on Resy.com or the Resy app at time of purchase to be eligible for the statement credit and are subject to change at any time. Purchases made via Resy Pay and purchases of Resy OS restaurant management software are not eligible.”

Additionally, non-dining purchases, such as merchandise or gift cards, are ineligible. You also cannot receive the credit if you make the purchase with your electronic wallet or if the merchant uses a mobile or wireless card reader to process your purchase.

Delta Platinum Cards

The Delta Platinum cards are Amex’s mid-tier co-branded cards. They provide bonus earning categories, enhanced travel benefits, and can help you reach higher levels of Delta SkyMiles Medallion elite status.

The Delta Platinum card and Delta Platinum Business card can now earn up to $120 annual Resy statement credits, broken down into up to $10 monthly credits.

Are The Resy Credits Worth It?

Although statement credits may seem like a win, the fact that they are broken down into monthly credits is not. A cumulative $120 annual credit would be far more beneficial for most. However, Amex knows this and provides monthly credits for 1 main reason: breakage.

“Breakage” is a term merchants use to describe the unredeemed value of a benefit or a credit. When a credit goes unused, that is value for Amex that is not passed onto the cardholder.

For example, say your card has the ability to earn up to a $20 statement credit for a Resy purchase, and your meal is $17. The remaining $3 is the breakage, as only 1 statement credit will be issued per transaction.

Amex knows that cardholders may forget to use a benefit that provides additional profit for Amex. The same goes for statement credits. Every statement credit that is not redeemed is a win for Amex.

Final Thoughts

If you enjoy fine dining, the new Resy statement credits on the personal and business Delta Platinum cards and Delta Reserve cards are a huge win.

If you can utilize these credits, you can effectively lower your card’s annual fee. A combined $120 annual credit would be far more beneficial; however, Amex knows monthly statement credits will sometimes go unused.

If you carry the Delta Reserve card or Delta Reserve Business card, you will also receive Global Dining Access by Resy, which has several benefits, including priority reservation notifications and access to member-only experiences.
