American Airlines has a promotion that lets elite members from other airlines match to an elevated status in the American AAdvantage program, up to its highest published status level, Executive Platinum. After 4 months, you can keep Executive Platinum for a year if you earn 50,000 Loyalty Points, instead of the 200,000 normally required.

The promotion is available only to people who hold status with Delta, United, Southwest, and JetBlue, and is also targeted, so you have to check your AAdvantage account to see if you are eligible. The application window closes on October 23.

Here’s what the promotion entails, and how to do it.

The Details of the American Airlines Elevated Status Promotion

As reported by View from the Wing and verified by Upgraded Points, the Instant Status Pass promotion lets users go 1 tier higher than the standard status match that airlines typically offer to elite flyers with competing carriers.

For example, someone with Medallion status with Delta Air Lines would match according to the following table:

To be matched at American’s highest level, Executive Platinum, you just need to be a Delta Platinum, 1 level below the highest published Delta status, Diamond Medallion.

What’s more, the match to Executive Platinum includes 4 passes to American’s Flagship Lounges, which are the carrier’s premium-exclusive spaces.

The first stop to verify if you are eligible is to check the Promotions tab in your American Airlines AAdvantage account. If the match doesn’t appear there, you can apply on the American Airlines Corporate Status Match Plus page — with the caveat that, according to the offer’s terms, eligibility is based on “your company’s relationship with American Airlines” or on being an AAdvantage Business Select tier partner.

While the terms specify that a match can take up to 4 weeks, you’ll likely be notified of approval or rejection much faster. Once approved, your new status benefits will apply to any existing bookings within 24 hours.

After 4 months with your new AA status, you have the opportunity to keep it until March 31, 2028, if you earn a certain number of Loyalty Points, which are the metric American uses to award elite status.

If you are the primary cardholder of an American Airlines co-branded card issued by Citi, you also get a level up from what those Loyalty Points would normally give you, according to this table:

As for the passes to the Flagship Lounges, they should be deposited in your account within 30 days of the match being approved, and they’re valid for 182 days from the date of deposit. Unfortunately, the passes do not allow guests, nor access to Flagship Dining, the lounges’ sit-down restaurants offering à la carte menus.

Hot Tip:

Flagship Lounge access isn’t available with credit cards, but American Airlines does sell day passes if you aren’t eligible for access. A 1-time pass costs $150 or 15,000 AAdvantage miles per person, though children under 2 are included free of charge.

Final Thoughts

If you meet the requirements and plan to fly routes served by American Airlines or its partners, the Instant Status Pass promotion is a no-brainer. At a minimum, you’ll enjoy 4 months with AA elite status, and you then have the opportunity to keep that status for far less than it would otherwise require.

American Airlines is clearly making a play to entice top flyers from its rivals, and if it makes sense for you, this is a promotion we can recommend.
