Booking award flights for my family of 5 to Brazil, Spain, and New York was the easy part. Paying for comfortable seating together was the expensive part.

Even with American Airlines AAdvantage Gold status, I kept running into the same issue: Main Cabin Extra seats only become available at check-in, and it was tough to find 5 good seats together.

That meant paying thousands of dollars in seat-selection fees on every trip if I wanted extra legroom and better seating for my family. Instead of trying to slowly earn American Airlines Platinum status the traditional way, I found a shortcut: paying $495 for an instant status match offer that unlocked complimentary Main Cabin Extra seats at booking.

After running the numbers on our upcoming trips, that move saved us more than $2,000 in seat fees alone. For families who regularly fly American Airlines, this may be one of the most underrated elite-status moves available.

Why Main Cabin Extra Matters for Families

Main Cabin Extra seats offer additional legroom and are typically close to the front of American Airlines’ standard economy cabin. If you’re flying solo, waiting until check-in to grab a seat isn’t usually a big deal. But traveling with another adult and 3 children is more difficult.

With AAdvantage Gold status, complimentary Main Cabin Extra access only opens up 24 hours before departure. By then, there may only be a few scattered seats left throughout the cabin. That’s where Gold status can feel limiting for families.

That typically means choosing preferred seats, which are regular economy seats near the front of the plane, without the added legroom or comfort.

That’s why I’ve always viewed AAdvantage Platinum status as the real sweet spot for families. Platinum members can select Main Cabin Extra seats at the time of booking, rather than waiting until check-in. And those savings add up quickly. On many domestic routes, Main Cabin Extra seats can easily cost up to $80 per passenger each way.

On longer international flights like the ones I’ve booked from Miami (MIA) to Barcelona (BCN), I saw Main Cabin Extra seats priced as high as $130 per passenger.

Multiply that by 5 travelers, and suddenly you’re looking at hundreds of dollars each trip just to sit a little more comfortably.

Main Cabin Extra includes extra legroom, while preferred seats are simply standard economy seats located closer to the front of the cabin. Why I Didn’t Want To Earn Platinum Status the Traditional Way

After redeeming AAdvantage miles for these upcoming trips, I was still left with 2 choices: either pay hundreds of dollars in seat fees or wait and hope that Main Cabin Extra seats would still be available 24 hours before departure when my Gold status benefit kicked in.

For a family of 5, that second option felt risky. I started looking at what it would take to earn enough Loyalty Points to acquire AAdvantage Platinum status. American Airlines Platinum status requires 75,000 Loyalty Points. Since I had fewer than 5,000 points this year, I still needed to earn roughly 70,000 more to get there.

Technically, I could’ve shifted spending onto my Citi^® / AAdvantage^® Platinum Select^® World Elite Mastercard^®, since eligible purchases earn 1 Loyalty Point per dollar spent. But that would’ve meant moving significant spending away from more rewarding cards for my everyday spending habits, like my American Express^® Gold Card, Bilt Palladium Card (rates & fees), and Chase Sapphire Preferred^® Card.

I would have shifted spending into the American Airlines ecosystem to chase elite status. And even then, timing was another issue. Even if I earned Platinum status later in the year, the exact seats we wanted could already be gone by then. So, I started looking into another option.

How We Used American Airlines’ Instant Status Pass

I knew I wasn’t eligible for American Airlines’ Instant Status Pass promotion since I had used it less than 24 months ago.

American Airlines generally limits these offers to once every 2 years. Because I already had Gold status, I couldn’t use it to match to Platinum. My wife, however, had not held American Airlines status since 2023, when she had Executive Platinum status from frequent business travel.

Using the American Airlines chat in the mobile app, she could check whether she was eligible for an Instant Status Pass offer — and she was.

The representative offered several paid Instant Status Pass options:

Gold status for $295
Platinum status for $495
Platinum Pro status for $795
Executive Platinum status for $1,195

Since Platinum status was all we needed for our family seating strategy, we went with the $495 Platinum option.

The best part? Her status showed up almost instantly after payment.

With her new elite status, our reservations to Spain, Brazil, and New York suddenly allowed us to select complimentary Main Cabin Extra seats.

On our spring break trip to Rio de Janeiro next year, upgrading all 5 of us to Main Cabin Extra seats would’ve cost more than $1,200 round-trip. That single trip more than justified the $495 fee for the Platinum Instant Status Pass.

We already had trips booked to Barcelona this summer and to New York for Thanksgiving, and we instantly saved on those Main Cabin Extra seats, too. Just across those 3 trips, we’re already looking at well over $2,000 in seat fees.

And because I’m still booking additional trips, the savings will easily surpass $3,000. More importantly, we were able to lock in the seats immediately. Had I spent months trying to earn Platinum status organically, the exact Main Cabin Extra seats we wanted might’ve already disappeared.

Bottom Line:

Unlike some airline status matches that require you to complete a challenge before receiving benefits, American Airlines’ Instant Status Pass grants elite status almost immediately after payment. Depending on your offer, paying for a few months of instant elite status could save you money on Main Cabin Extra seat fees, especially if you’re traveling as a family.

How We Plan To Keep Platinum Status

We plan to keep my wife’s status as long as possible by meeting the Loyalty Point thresholds. American Airlines’ Instant Status Pass works in 4-month phases. To maintain status, you must earn a certain number of Loyalty Points during each phase.

That will likely include a few strategies:

Spending on her American Airlines co-branded credit card
Organic business travel that she already has planned
Leveraging the AAdvantage shopping portal for planned purchases

For our family, Platinum status may be worth keeping for Main Cabin Extra access alone. When you regularly book flights for 5 people, avoiding hundreds — or even thousands — in seat fees can make elite status feel far more practical than aspirational.

Final Thoughts

Paying $495 for airline status isn’t normally my style. But after comparing the cost of Main Cabin Extra seats for my family across multiple trips, American Airlines’ Instant Status Pass made more sense than trying to earn Platinum status the traditional way.

For us, being able to immediately select Main Cabin Extra seats together on flights to Rio, Barcelona, and New York — plus other trips I’m already booking — easily justifies the cost. And if you regularly fly American Airlines with a family, it’s worth running the math before paying cash for seat assignments.
