What Is CLEAR?

CLEAR is an expedited screening service offered at many major airports worldwide. The concept is fairly simple:

You purchase a CLEAR membership package through CLEAR.
At the airport, you complete a one-time scan of your eyes and fingerprints which are matched against your boarding pass each time that you fly.
On every subsequent trip to the airport, you just use the CLEAR lane provided, scan your boarding pass and your fingerprint and your eyes, and continue directly to the x-ray scanner and baggage screening process.

The CLEAR service saves you time. Wait times for both regular and PreCheck security have increased over the past few months particularly, and since CLEAR is a paid service, there is only a small subset of travelers that use it, therefore decreasing the amount of time you need to wait in line at security at the airport.

It’s worth noting that CLEAR does not reduce the actual security process itself — you are still scanned, along with your baggage. CLEAR simply allows you to get to the front of the security line faster.

American Express has released an Amex Offer for eligible cardholders that allow you to save 50% of any CLEAR membership package, up to $95.

CLEAR recently raised its annual fee to $189, so assuming you purchase at that rate, you’d save $95. If your account is eligible, you need to add the offer to your Amex card and then use that card to purchase your membership. Your card may come with an incentive to use CLEAR already, so you may want to combine this offer with any other savings you may see.

This offer expires on August 23, 2022, so you’ll want to purchase your CLEAR membership before that date.
