Unless you’ve been living under a rock, the Platinum Card® from American Express just got a major refresh, adding value to existing benefits and new perks altogether.

Many may bristle at the $895 annual fee (rates & fees) — a $200 increase — but the statement credits that were added make that increase entirely palatable, in my opinion. Some benefits require prior enrollment.

In fact, I’m confident I’ll be able to achieve at least $1,000 in value just by using the “lifestyle” credits on the card, which don’t even represent the full suite of benefits offered by the card. In my estimation, this grouping of statement credits is really the cherry on top that elevates the Amex Platinum card to its position at the top of the mountain of high-end travel rewards cards.

Amex Platinum Card’s Lifestyle Credits — Overview

With its latest refresh, the Amex Platinum card made some meaningful additions to its suite of statement credits — or added value to existing ones.

Of course, not every cardmember will be able to use every statement credit to its fullest potential, but this crop of statement credits suits my lifestyle and particular spending habits very well. Here’s a quick look at the new and enhanced statement credits I’m referring to specifically:

  • Up to $300 Lululemon credit: Earn up to $75 in statement credits each quarter when you use your card for eligible purchases at U.S. Lululemon retail stores (outlets are excluded) or at lululemon.com. Enrollment required.
  • Up to $400 Resy credit: Earn up to $100 in statement credits each quarter — when you use your card to make Resy dining purchases at more than 10,000 U.S. restaurants participating in Resy. Enrollment required.
  • Up to $200 Oura Ring credit when you use your card to purchase an Oura Ring at ouraring.com each calendar year. Enrollment is required, and the credit applies only to the purchase of the ring itself, not toward the monthly subscription cost.
  • Up to a $300 digital entertainment credit by receiving up to $25 in statement credits each month when you use your card to pay for a subscription to at least one of the following services: Disney+, a Disney+ bundle, ESPN+, Hulu, The New York Times, Paramount+, Peacock, The Wall Street Journal, YouTube Premium, and YouTube TV. Enrollment required.
  • Up to a $600 hotel credit, dispersed in statement credits of up to $300 from January to June and from July to December on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection reservations made via AmexTravel.com with your card. Note that The Hotel Collection stays require a minimum of 2 nights.

Remember, the above list only focuses on the lifestyle credits. There are so many amazing travel benefits offered on the Amex Platinum card:

How I’ll Achieve $1,000+ in Value From Amex Platinum Card

The statement credits mentioned above are the ones I can use easily to extract at least $1,000 in value from the Amex Platinum card.

If taken alone, this already exceeds the amount paid to keep the card in my wallet, and this ignores all of the other perks and benefits of the card, not to mention its earning potential. Here’s how I’ll use each to achieve as much value as possible.

Lululemon Credit

I don’t do a ton of clothes shopping, but I can always find a use for an item or 2 from Lululemon.

With quarterly statement credits of up to $75 available for use, I think of this benefit as a gift to myself every season. My strategy is simple for this one: stay as close as possible to the $75 mark, whether I’m buying a single full-price item or a couple of pieces that are on sale.

This way, I know I’m essentially getting the full $300 in incremental value, not simply offsetting a much larger cash outlay by $300. It helps that much of what I own from Lululemon I’ve had for years, and I don’t need an entire new lineup of clothing from there.

So, I can purchase 1 or 2 items at a time and not feel like I’m missing out on clothes I need (or really, really want). I’ll certainly use the full $300 value of this statement credit.

Resy Credit

Living in Chicago, I dine out frequently. And luckily, the nation’s third-largest city is awash in restaurants that participate in Resy — and often they’re some of the best spots in town.

The Amex Platinum card makes it easy to save money on dining at Resy restaurants. Once every quarter, as long as I pay for a meal (or even a few) at a Resy-participating restaurant with my card, I’ll receive a statement credit of up to $100.

This is an easy win, as there’s no doubt I spend up to $100 every quarter at Resy restaurants. I’ll have no trouble earning the maximum annual value from this credit.

Oura Ring Credit

It’s likely that just about everyone you know is wearing an Oura Ring these days. Amex has picked up on one of the trendiest wearable tech items around and is offering Amex Platinum cardmembers a credit that could either pay outright for — or significantly offset the cost of — an Oura Ring.

Remember, the credit is only eligible for use on the ring itself, not the cost of a monthly subscription. On Oura Ring’s website, you can purchase a current-generation Oura Ring for $349 or a last-generation model for $199.

Factoring in the cost of $69.99 for an annual subscription, I’m looking at a total effective value of about $130 if I purchase the previous-generation ring (the jury’s still out on which version I’ll purchase).

Digital Entertainment Credit

The existing digital entertainment credit got a boost in value this year, now worth up to $300 annually. Also, Amex added a couple of platforms to the eligible list this year, most notably, YouTube TV. The larger up to $300 credit is distributed in monthly statement credits of up to $25.

I subscribe to The New York Times, which costs me $23 monthly. Under the previous setup, I’d still pay $3 monthly for that subscription, but now I’ll get the entire monthly cost covered and have a couple of dollars to apply to another subscription like YouTube TV.

Hotel Credit

The increase of the Amex Platinum card’s hotel credit from up to $200 annually to up to $600 annually is a very big deal. It’s slightly unfortunate that the credit is split up into 2 up-to-$300 statement credits each half of the year, but having $300 to play with twice a year is no small matter.

I typically don’t go out of my way to use this hotel credit because hotels that participate in Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection are pretty pricey. Instead, I look for opportunities to use it when I need a “filler” hotel, usually in the middle of a larger trip or to tack on an extra night or 2 at the beginning or end of a trip. This way, I’m not spending superfluously just to take advantage of a credit I have at my disposal.

Another reason this hotel credit is so handy is that the hotel credit and Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits are triggered on stays of just 1 night, whereas The Hotel Collection properties require a minimum of 2 nights. This ensures I can tailor the length of my stay to stay as close to the $300 credit as possible. Again, I don’t want to run into a situation where I spend hundreds of dollars in excess of what I usually would to save up to $300 each half of the year.

With the amount of traveling I do in a year, I can’t foresee having any issue using the full up to $600 hotel credit year in and year out.

Bottom Line:

When taken together, these 5 Amex Platinum card statement credits will give me well over $1,000 in value every year. Considering the card’s annual fee, I’ll already come out way ahead just by using these statement credits — none of which require much effort from me at all.

Final Thoughts

The Amex Platinum card’s new and enhanced lifestyle credits are an easy way to achieve significant value, far surpassing the card’s annual fee. Remember, too, that this is just a portion of the card’s perks and benefits — there are many more available to save you money, enhance your journey, and protect you in case anything goes wrong during your travels.
