The San José to Guatemala City to Miami route will be operated under fifth freedom rights via Avianca Costa Rica S.A. Fifth freedom flights transport passengers between 2 countries other than the airline’s home country. These routes are permitted as long as the aircraft starts or ends in the airline’s home base country, which, in this instance, is Costa Rica.
Avianca highlighted tourism and business opportunities in announcing the new routes. The airline is a significant conduit for transporting U.S. travelers to South America and vice versa. Avianca said it flew more than 4 million passengers to and from the U.S. last year.
“With these new nonstop routes, we aim to further strengthen these ties by expanding our network to more than 40 direct routes between the U.S. and Latin America,” said Otto Gergye, chief commercial officer at Avianca.
It’s been a busy few weeks for Avianca. Last month, the airline launched 4 new nonstop routes from the U.S. and added a new city in Tampa (TPA). Additionally, Avianca launched a freedom flight from San Juan (SJU) to San José (SJO), offering direct flights between Puerto Rico and Costa Rica.
In addition to the South Florida service, Avianca will also introduce several other new routes. These include Chicago (ORD) to San Salvador, Dallas (DFW) to Bogotá (BOG), and Bogotá to Córdoba, Argentina (COR).
Final Thoughts
Avianca has announced several new exciting routes from the U.S., complementing its rapid growth this year. Given how much positive news we’ve heard from the South American airline, I suspect we’ll soon learn of other new routes.
