Last summer, Marriott announced it would enter into a licensing agreement with Sonder, which operates short-term rentals and apartment hotels.

Sonder was supposed to be integrated into the Marriott Bonvoy program in 2025, but the hotel chain appears ahead of schedule. Let’s take a look.

Sonder by Marriott Details

Sonder by Marriott hotels can now be booked a few months ahead of schedule. Here’s a breakdown of the earnings for Sonder properties:

  • 10x Marriott Bonvoy points per $1 spent on room rates at Sonder Hotels
  • 5x Marriott Bonvoy points per $1 spent on room rates at Sonder Hotels

For all bookings, you’ll earn 1 elite night credit per qualifying night and can redeem Marriott Bonvoy points on your stay.

However, there are numerous restrictions associated with booking a Sonder reservation. You must book your stay by calling the Sonder support team, at Sonder.com, or using the Sonder mobile app.

You also must book your stay at least 7 days before arrival, and you cannot book, modify, or rebook an award stay within 7 days of arrival. Additionally, you can only redeem Marriott Bonvoy points — not free night awards. Additionally, fifth-night free awards do not apply to Sonder reservations. Lastly, Marriott’s updated terms say that you won’t earn points on “food and beverage charges or other ancillary charges at Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy.”

Bottom Line:

We don’t yet know how much Sonder Hotels and Apartments cost with Marriott Bonvoy points. Still, you’ll want to have some points on hand when we do. Luckily, it is easy to earn lots of Marriott Bonvoy points. Marriott has 3 transfer partners: American Express Membership RewardsBilt Rewards, and Chase Ultimate Rewards. The hotel giant also has several co-branded credit cards with massive welcome bonuses.

About Sonder by Marriott

Sonder launched back in 2014 as an answer to a market (made up primarily of business travelers) looking for high-end apartment-like options. You’ll find Sonder properties in 45+ cities, including Amsterdam, Mexico City, Los Angeles, and New York. But Sonder isn’t like your typical hotel — in fact, it’s almost entirely self-service. You’ll check in, make room requests, and even get city recommendations through the Sonder app.

Sonder and Marriott inked a deal this past summer for the former’s portfolio to join Marriott Bonvoy. At the time, the 2 companies said the partnership would add 9,000 rooms to the program with an additional pipeline of 1,500 rooms.

Final Thoughts

We didn’t expect Sonder by Marriott to be available until next year, so news these hotels are now live is excellent news for travelers. While the brand has several restrictions (like no fifth-night free bookings), Sonder still makes sense for travelers looking for a high-end extended stay option with the ability to earn and redeem points!
