South American cities like Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro are popular destinations for U.S. travelers, but they can be on the pricey side if paying cash for airfare.

Luckily, there seem to be some cheap fares right now to and from these popular cities. Let’s take a look!

Fare Deal – Details

LAX to GRU
You can fly to Brazil for under $500 round-trip — if you don’t mind being in basic economy! Image Credit: Google Flights

This is a combination of several deals on various airlines, including American Airlines, Delta, LATAM, and United, to cities across South America, including Buenos Aires (EZE), Rio de Janeiro (GIG), Santiago (SCL), and São Paulo (GRU).

It’s important to note that the cheapest tickets are often in basic economy, so you’ll generally need to pay extra to choose your seat or check bags. However, some of these restrictions can be countered by having elite status or an airline’s co-branded credit card.

A few airlines offer regular economy fares starting at a few hundred dollars more, which may be a better option if you want more flexibility and the ability to check bags or pick your seats ahead of time.

Make sure to play around on Google Flights to find the best deals.

  • Class: Economy
  • Routes: Boston (BOS), Los Angeles (LAX), Washington (IAD) to Buenos Aires (EZE), Rio de Janeiro (GIG), Santiago (SCL), and São Paulo (GRU)
  • Dates: February to April 2023
  • Rates: As low as $490 round-trip

Hot Tip: Want to find the cheapest fares? Make sure to check out our guide to finding flights with Google Flights!

Best Ways To Book

I suggest finding dates on Google Flights or another OTA, such as Skyscanner, and then booking tickets directly with the airline.

If you’re booking directly, make sure to use a card such as The Platinum Card® from American Express or The Business Platinum Card® from American Express. These cards earn 5x Membership Rewards points per $1 spent on airfare purchases made directly with the airline, with the Amex Platinum earning being capped at up to $500,000 in these purchases per year.

You can also use a card that rewards you for travel purchases, such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, which earns 3x Ultimate Rewards on all travel purchases, or the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, which earns 2x miles on all purchases, including travel (5x miles on flights booked through Capital One Travel).

Final Thoughts

These are great deals, especially since cash fares to cities like Rio de Janeiro can frequently cost more than $1,000 roundtrip. But with such competitive fares, these are sure not to last, so book quickly!
