Mesa is an Austin, Texas-based fintech company that aims to reward U.S. homeowners for expenses related to buying and maintaining a home. Last year, the company launched the Mesa Homeowners Card, which earns bonus points on those home-related expenses.

Now, Mesa is partnering with Lowe’s, and cardholders will get Lowe’s credits when using the card to shop at the home-improvement chain. Plus, there are some improvements to earning and redeeming points with the card.

What’s New for the Mesa Homeowners Card?

Today’s news is that cardholders of the Mesa card can now earn up to $120 annually in Lowe’s credits (in-store and online) when they’ve linked their card to a MyLowe’s Rewards account and make purchases using the Mesa card.

That’s not the only new addition, Mesa said in a statement. Mesa also added a new bonus category to the card: daycare expenses, now earning 3x points.

With this change, this is the Mesa card’s earning structure:

  • 3x on home-related spending, including home improvement, maintenance, HOA fees, homeowner’s insurance, property taxes, and utilities
  • 3x on daycare expenses (daycare, nursery, and preschool)
  • 2x on everyday spending, including grocery, gas, and EV charging
  • 1x on a linked mortgage, up to 100,000 points per year
  • 1x on all other eligible purchases

Essentially, the Mesa card wants to do for homeowners what the Bilt World Elite Mastercard® does for renters, which earns bonus Bilt Points on rent payments on up to 100,000 points per year. However, you must make at least 5 transactions with your Bilt Card each billing period to earn points (rewards & benefits).

The way the Mesa card works for mortgage payments is not by directly using the card to pay. You’ll need to connect the bank account used to make those payments to the Mesa app, which will then issue rewards in the form of Mesa Points.

There also are some additional benefits of the Mesa card:

  • Complimentary big box retailer memberships, such as Sam’s Club
  • Home maintenance credits with Thumbtack
  • Pet care credits with Wag! and The Farmer’s Dog
  • Visa Signature benefits

What Are Mesa Points?

Those Mesa Points can be redeemed in several ways, including gift cards, statement credits, the Mesa travel booking portal, and even closing costs on a new home. Mesa Points can also be applied towards a monthly mortgage payment. However, there are no transfer partners yet.

While we haven’t verified independently the value of Mesa Points, the company said in an emailed statement that it has revised its rewards value, moving higher in some categories:

  • Travel redemptions went from 1 to 1.3 cents per point
  • Gift cards went from 0.75 to 0.8 cents per point
  • Statement credits went from 0.5 to 0.6 cents per point
Bottom Line:

If you’re among the 65% of Americans who own their home, the Mesa card may be worth a look — especially since it has no annual fee.

Final Thoughts

The Mesa card has added a feature that provides up to $120 per year in credits at Lowe’s, giving the card additional value as a potential tool for homeowners.

And while the points you can earn with it aren’t as flexible as other credit card points, the Mesa card may be worth a look in order to earn points on mortgage payments that you would make anyway.
