There are so many advantages of no annual fee credit cards. First, you’re not paying to have these cards so you’re able to keep them as long as you wish. Since one of the factors that makes up your credit score is the length of your credit history, holding on to a no annual fee credit card indefinitely can be a prudent move.

Another advantage of having a no annual fee card is that you’re earning rewards at no additional cost to you. If you’re purchasing items you’d purchase normally and earning rewards, it’s a win-win all around.

Some no annual fee cards come with additional benefits that can save you money. You’ll find 0% APR periods for purchases and balance transfers that can save you from incurring interest charges when you utilize these introductory offers.

You’ll also find cards that offer travel insurance and benefits, shopping protections, and even complimentary hotel elite status.

All these advantages are great but how do you select a no annual fee credit card that is right for your situation? Here are our recommended no annual fee credit cards to assist you in doing just that.

When you read through, contemplate your greatest expenses, how you might want to redeem the rewards you earn, and notice if there are any complimentary benefits on the card that you might actual use.

The introductory 0% APR period begins when you are approved for the card and extends for a period specific to the card, usually 12 to 18 months.

You’ll want to make sure your balance is paid off prior to the period expiring as interest will be applied immediately, usually at a very high rate.

Here’s a sampling of no annual fee credit cards with current 0% APR introductory periods.

There are many cards to offer 0% APR introductory periods if these cards aren’t really suited to your wallet.

Final Thoughts

No annual fee credit cards make great starter cards that you can hold on to for many years.

Most no annual fee credit cards, however, do not have the level of benefits, earning potential, or flexible redemption options that might come with cards that have larger annual fees.

Of course, finding a balance between paying annual fees, earning rewards, and utilizing card benefits will depend on your own personal preferences.

However, a no annual fee card can certainly earn a place in your wallet if it adds any sort of value you can use.

FAQ

Is it worth getting a credit card with no annual fee?

No annual fee credit cards have a lot of advantages. Since you’re not paying an annual fee, you can keep the card as long as you want, earn rewards without paying for the privilege, and even enjoy any travel or shopping benefits that come with the card.

You’ll need to determine if the card brings value based on how the card aligns with your spending, whether the redemption options are a fit, and if you can use the benefits.

The bottom line is you’re not paying to keep the card but you do incur a hard pull inquiry on your credit report at application time so it’s good to be selective in the cards you choose.

Why would I want a credit card with an annual fee?

Credit cards that come with annual fees frequently have greater earning potential and better benefits. They can even offer statement credits or perks that provide direct economic value that may offset the annual fee.

For example, a premium credit card that charges several hundred dollars a year for an annual fee may provide complimentary worldwide airport lounge membership that could cost much more than that if purchased separately.

Additionally, a card that charges $450 as an annual fee could offer a $300 travel credit, lounge access membership, and primary car rental insurance. For the right cardholder, this equation could make economic sense.

What does 0% APR mean?

APR stands for annual percentage rate. An introductory 0% APR for purchases means that for a specific period of time from the date you’re approved for the credit card (usually 12-18 months) you will not be charged interest on purchases.

If you make regular on-time payments and pay off the balance prior to the 0% APR period expiring, you will not be charged interest.

There may also be a 0% APR introductory period for balance transfers as well. This means that if you transfer a balance from another credit card ( perhaps charging a high rate of interest) to your 0% APR credit card, you can pay off the balance over the period of 0% APR and not be charged interest.

One caution for balance transfers is that although cards may have a 0% APR introductory period, they may charge transfer fees so be sure to check pricing terms.

In addition, you must be sure to pay off any balances before the introductory period expires or you will be charged significant interest.

What is the easiest no annual fee credit card to get approved for?

Most no annual fee credit cards require good to excellent credit.

If you have no credit or even bad credit, you may want to start with a card that will help you build or rebuild your credit.

For example, a secured credit card can also serve the purpose of getting your credit back on track or starting the process of building credit.
