An often overlooked perk of The Platinum Card® from American Express is access to the Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) program. Booking luxury hotels through this program gives you additional on-site perks akin to higher levels of hotel elite status, including upgrades, complimentary breakfast, and even on-site dining credits.

Plus, the Amex Platinum card includes up to a $200 annual prepaid hotel credit, which can be used for hotels in the FHR or The Hotel Collection program, though the latter requires a minimum 2-night stay. This perk helps offset a good portion of the card’s $695 annual fee (rates & fees).

I’ve used Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts to book several stays over the years, some of which have been truly special. Here, I’ll show you my favorite hotel stays I’ve booked through this awesome program.

Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts Overview

The American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts program is a handpicked collection of upscale hotels worldwide. Select Amex cardholders can book hotels and receive extra on-site benefits, similar to higher tiers of hotel elite status, including:

You can book these stays through AmexTravel.com — just be sure to pay with your eligible Amex card to receive the benefits. Another great perk of the FHR program is that, at participating hotels, you can still earn loyalty points and elite night credits with programs like World of Hyatt.

Hot Tip:

Unlike the Amex Hotel Collection, there’s no minimum number of nights required to book within the FHR program. You can enjoy FHR benefits even on 1-night stays.

Best Cards for Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts Bookings

One of the most popular cards for access is the Amex Platinum card, which also includes up to a $200 annual prepaid hotel credit that can be used on FHR bookings. This is enough to cover a night at some of the best Fine Hotels + Resorts properties, and you’ll also earn 5 Membership Rewards points per $1 on prepaid bookings.

Grand Hyatt Taipei

Taipei, Taiwan, was the last stop on my wife’s and my honeymoon earlier this year. We spent a night in the city on a 36-hour layover, and we wanted to make the most of it with a central hotel close to the restaurants and sites we wanted to experience. After assessing our options, we landed on the Grand Hyatt Taipei.

Grand Hyatt Taipei Room
The property itself is massive, with over 850 rooms.

The hotel is in the town center, near Taipei 101, Taipei City Hall, and other major tourist attractions. As our welcome amenity, we received an upgrade to a larger room and a $100 dining credit, which we used for lunch at Cheers, the hotel’s lobby bar and grill.

Our room was spacious, with a massive shower, seating area, and sectional couch. It could use some updating and refurbishment (for example, our window shades were lopsided), but for roughly $300 per night, including taxes, we felt it was well worth a night in Taipei.

Steigenberger Icon Frankfurter Hof

We had an overnight layover in Frankfurt, Germany, on our way back from a vacation in Malta in 2022. With just under 20 hours to spare, we figured we’d make the most of our time in Germany and stay in the city instead of an airport hotel. I had my Amex Platinum card’s annual prepaid hotel credit to use, so I booked a night at the Steigenberger Icon Frankfurter Hof.

Steigenberger Icon Frankfurter Hof Bed
We were upgraded to a Grand Deluxe room, which was spacious and well-appointed.

Next to Frankfurt’s central train station, it’s in the middle of the city’s historical center and financial district. We arrived on a Sunday, when much of the city was shut down. Thankfully, we used the $100 dining credit for a nice dinner at Oscar’s, the hotel’s lobby restaurant, after a walk around the center of town.

Our guest room had a large (and comfortable) bed, Acqua di Parma toiletries, a massive bathroom with a soaking tub, and even a pillow menu. The lobby and exterior of the hotel were beautiful as well, remaining largely untouched since the hotel opened in 1876.

Downtown LA Proper Hotel

My wife and I went on our first cruise in 2023. We sailed to and from Long Beach, California, but our flight home departed from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), so we scheduled a day in downtown on the way home.

We booked an FHR stay at the Downtown Los Angeles Proper Hotel, part of Marriott Bonvoy. It’s in the heart of LA’s Fashion District and has stunning rooms with stylish furniture and comfortable beds. There are even Aesop toiletries in the bathroom.

Downtown LA Proper Hotel Room
We loved this hotel and its modern vibe.

However, my favorite part of the hotel was its rooftop bar and restaurant, with a stunning 360-degree view of Downtown Los Angeles. Using the $100 dining credit included as a welcome amenity, we had sunset drinks and appetizers with a childhood friend who moved to LA, which was a highlight of the trip.

Final Thoughts

The Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts program gives eligible cardmembers a slew of benefits when booking through AmexTravel.com. These perks include complimentary breakfast, room upgrades, dining credits, and more. Plus, the Amex Platinum card gives you an annual, up to $200 prepaid hotel credit that you can use at these properties, giving you even more reason to try it on your next trip.

If you’re eligible, consider booking a stay through FHR the next time you’re looking for a hotel. Rates are often comparable to booking direct, and you still earn points and elite status credit in most cases.
