Thanks to my location in Madrid, Spain, I’ve been a dedicated Iberia flyer for decades. I frequently fly the airline in Europe and between Madrid and Chicago. When I visit family in the U.S., I also fly on American Airlines, which partners with Iberia in the Oneworld alliance.

I also hold Oneworld Ruby and American Airlines Gold status, so I tend to fly other Oneworld carriers, like Cathay Pacific and Qatar Airways, too. You might think my favorite credit card would be an American Airlines co-branded card, but it’s actually not. As a Oneworld loyalist, I find the the Citi Strata Elite℠ Card to be one of the most used cards in my wallet, and here’s why.

Some of my favorite benefits of the card include the up-to-$300 annual hotel credit on Citi Travel (2-night minimum), which gets me money back on my hotel stays. I also really appreciate the card’s Priority Pass lounge access (valid for the cardholder and 2 guests), which allows me to bring my family into airport lounges with me.

Plus, the card’s generous up-to-$200 Splurge Credit is valid on up to two of the following brands: 1stDibs, American Airlines (exclusions apply), Best Buy, Future Personal Training, and Live Nation (exclusions apply). I tend to use it for American Airlines or Best Buy purchases.

The up-to-$200 Blacklane credit is also helpful for airport transfers. It’s split into 2 parts, offering $100 in the first half of the year and another $100 in the second half. This year, I’ve used it during a trip to Singapore in August and, back in January, to get from the Madrid airport to my home.

5 Reasons Why I Love My Citi Strata Elite Card as a Oneworld Loyalist

The Citi Strata Elite card launched in 2025, and it’s opened up so many opportunities for me to fly for (nearly) free with American Airlines, get lounge access, and generally improve my flying and airport experience as a Oneworld flyer.

1. Citi ThankYou Points Transfer 1:1 to American AAdvantage With This Card

I can easily transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points and American Express Membership Rewards to Iberia Avios (and Capital One miles to British Airways Avios, where I can use Avios.com to move them to Iberia Avios), but no major banks are transfer partners with American Airlines except Citi ThankYou Points. The Citi Strata Elite card offers a 1:1 transfer ratio when you move Citi ThankYou Points to AAdvantage miles.

The no-annual-fee Citi Strata℠ Card‘s points only move at a 1:0.7 ratio, so the Citi Strata Elite card’s 1:1 transfer ratio is extremely valuable to me when I need to top off my AAdvantage miles balance to get an AA award ticket.

Note that the Citi Strata Premier® Card‘s points also transfer at a 1:1 ratio.

2. High Welcome Offer

Currently, the welcome offer is pretty solid:

Earn 75,000 bonus Points after spending $6,000 in the first 3 months of account opening.

When I applied, the welcome offer was even higher at 100,000 points. I used it mainly to purchase 3 premium economy tickets between Madrid (MAD) and Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) during off-peak periods, when I got an amazing deal on award prices.

I’ve since transferred additional Citi ThankYou Points to AAdvantage to fly between Tucson (TUS) and Cancun (CUN), as well as between Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and Atlanta (ATL).

This card just keeps giving. It seems like whenever I need to quickly top off my AAdvantage miles, I’ve got them in my stash of Citi ThankYou Points. That makes it easy to book American Airlines and partner awards using AAdvantage miles.

Hot Tip:

Looking for ideas to spend your Citi Strata Elite card’s welcome offer bonus? Transferring points to airlines to book business class flights is a solid plan. Here’s how to do it.

3. Generous Bonus Categories

One of the reasons I tend to quickly build up a balance of Citi ThankYou Points is because of the card’s bonus categories:

  • Earn 12x points on hotels, car rentals, and attractions booked on Citi Travel.
  • Earn 6x points on flights booked on Citi Travel.
  • Earn 6x points at restaurants, including delivery services during Citi Nights, every Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Eastern time.
  • Earn 3x points at restaurants any other time.

When using the $300 hotel credit on Citi Travel, anything I spend beyond the credit earns 12 points per $1, which helps me grow my points balance. For example, if a hotel stay costs $1,000, I get $300 off and earn 12x on the remaining $700, which gets me more than 8,000 points.

Although I wish the 6x points applied to all restaurant spending, I can still take advantage of Citi Nights. For me, it’s usually more like breakfast or brunch, as I’m in a European time zone. Still, I love being able to earn these extra points during weekends.

There’s 1 thing I won’t use this card for: general travel spending. I’m much better off using another flexible rewards card that earns bonus points on travel, such as my Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

4. I Earn More Points for Everyday Spending

The Citi Strata Elite card earns 1.5x points on all other purchases.

Although I love that my Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card earns 2x miles on all purchases, I prefer the redemptions with Citi ThankYou Points. So I often pay for expenses such as my son’s school fees, clothing, and toiletries with the Citi Strata Elite card because I value having AA miles.

I’m about to start a big home renovation project, and I’ll definitely use the card to buy materials, furniture, and home decor items to earn 1.5x points.

5. Admirals Club Passes

Besides offering Priority Pass lounge access, the Citi Strata Elite card offers 4 Admirals Club passes annually, which I can use for myself or for family members traveling with me. These are extremely valuable to me, especially at airports like Chicago O’Hare, where Priority Pass lounge pickings are slim.

Admirals Club membership isn’t cheap. In fact, the price just increased to $1,400 for general AAdvantage members and $1,350 for AAdvantage Gold members.

Another option is to get the newly revamped Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Legend Mastercard® — it includes a full Admirals Club membership, with a new annual fee of $695 (and you can bring in 2 guests), plus additional perks.

Still, I’m only in the U.S. often enough to visit the Admirals Club once or twice a year. Also, I value other lounges, such as Capital One Lounges, in certain airports, over Admirals Clubs. This is why the 4 passes are valuable to me: They’re just enough to give me the occasional lounge visit, and I don’t need to get a full Admirals Club membership or an expensive AAdvantage co-branded card.

Citi Strata Elite Card vs. American AAdvantage Co-Branded Cards: Which Wins?

American Airlines AAdvantage has a host of co-branded cards, from entry-level to premium.

Although I hold the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®, I don’t think it’s the most valuable card for earning American Airlines miles.

I can earn 2x AAdvantage miles at gas stations and restaurants and on eligible American Airlines purchases, but in most cases, I’m better off charging certain purchases — such as general spending and restaurants — on my Citi Strata Elite card and transferring the Citi ThankYou Points to AAdvantage.

Nonetheless, I won’t get rid of my AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite card anytime soon — especially with the current trend of airlines offering better awards, more miles, and other perks to co-branded cardholders.

Plus, I value priority check-in and a free checked bag, which have helped save money, especially during certain years when I didn’t hold elite status. I’ll still put gas purchases and American Airlines purchases on the card, and use it for spending if I need to earn Loyalty Points.

My main focus for earning more AA miles is to spend on my Citi Strata Elite card and transfer points to the AAdvantage program.

Hot Tip:

One of the reasons I love my Citi Strata Elite card is the more than $700 worth of benefits I actually use. I don’t need to remember to track and take advantage of using monthly credits, which I do with some other flexible travel rewards cards.

Final Thoughts

As I continue to fly with Oneworld carriers, especially American Airlines, I’ll keep spending on my Citi Strata Elite card. The card is especially valuable to me because I get 4 Admirals Club passes annually, and can transfer Citi ThankYou Points to AAdvantage.

However, I can still transfer Citi ThankYou Points to other airlines and hotels if I need them for other redemptions. I recently needed 4,000 Flying Blue points for a redemption, and Citi ThankYou Points came to the rescue.

The perks of the Citi Strata Elite card and the flexibility of Citi ThankYou Points mean it will remain a fixture in my wallet.
