Just a few days after announcing that TrueBlue points could be used to book flights on TAP Portugal, JetBlue has rolled out an even closer partnership with the Portuguese airline: reciprocal benefits for members of either airline’s loyalty program.

This means that members of JetBlue’s TrueBlue program and of TAP’s Miles&Go program can earn and redeem points on either program when flying with either airline.

Let’s look at what this means, especially for TrueBlue members.

What You Get (and Don’t Get) With JetBlue / TAP Reciprocal Benefits

JetBlue said that the possibility of reciprocal earning and redeeming points on TAP Portugal is live as of today.

In a separate announcement, JetBlue also published earning rates for members of its TrueBlue loyalty program on TAP flights.

Note, however, that the reciprocity of loyalty benefits between JetBlue and TAP does not extend to recognition of elite status. So if you have Mosaic status with JetBlue, you will not enjoy Mosaic benefits on TAP.

“Mosaic perks apply to JetBlue-operated flights but do not extend to flights operated by our partner airlines,” JetBlue said.

You also will not earn tiles toward Mosaic status for spending on flights operated by TAP. However, “for codeshare flights booked on jetblue.com, you can earn tiles on the JetBlue-operated portion of the itinerary, if applicable.”

That said, earning TrueBlue points on TAP flights could be attractive for U.S. flyers loyal to JetBlue. Another attractive option for travelers is to credit TAP flights to United MileagePlus or Air Canada Aeroplan.

Redeeming TrueBlue Points for TAP Portugal: How It Works

You can also redeem TrueBlue points to fly business or economy on TAP Portugal.

This could be interesting as a way to get to Portugal from both the East and West Coasts of the U.S.

The awards are already bookable on the JetBlue site and you can search by clicking the button “Use TrueBlue points” in the booking interface. Taxes and fees are minimal for TAP awards with TrueBlue points, and there are no surcharges.

There is also no award chart for these redemptions, but we found that pricing to Portugal is consistent whether you depart from the East or West Coast.

One-way awards from the U.S. to Portugal cost the same 19,000 points in economy or 59,000 points in business class, regardless of departure point.

JetBlue’s website had a slightly misleading description of TAP’s business class, which said it had recliner seats. TAP has lie-flat beds in business class on the entire fleet of Airbus A330 twin-aisle and A321 single-aisle planes it flies on long-haul segments.

Compared with other programs popular with U.S. travelers, redeeming JetBlue points for travel on TAP to Portugal is the cheaper option.

Nonstop TAP flights from the East Coast to Portugal cost 44,000 miles with United’s MileagePlus, 35,000 with Air Canada Aeroplan, and 32,500 with Avianca LifeMiles. In business, United charges 80,000 miles, LifeMiles 65,000, and Aeroplan 60,000.

In economy, nonstop TAP flights from the East Coast cost 44,000 miles with United’s MileagePlus, 35,000 with Air Canada Aeroplan, and 32,500 with Avianca LifeMiles.

In business class, United requires 80,000 miles, LifeMiles charges 65,000, and Aeroplan costs 60,000.

When connecting, pricing is higher and differs between East and West Coast departures. For instance, a sample flight from Newark (EWR) to Lisbon (LIS) via Porto (OPO) costs 25,000 TrueBlue points in economy and 68,000 in business.

From the West Coast, awards cost a bit more in economy and significantly more in business. A connecting flight from San Francisco (SFO) to Munich (MUC) via Lisbon costs 38,000 points in economy and 108,000 in business.

There are several ways to earn TrueBlue points besides flying, such as using the right credit cards. Take a look at our guide of the best credit cards for JetBlue flyers.

Final Thoughts

JetBlue is expanding its partnership with TAP Portugal in ways that benefit its loyalty program members.

First, it announced that you could redeem TrueBlue points to fly TAP. Now, it has rolled out reciprocal loyalty benefits with the Portuguese airline, meaning you can earn and redeem points on either airline’s program when flying on either.

With the growing popularity of Portugal as a tourist destination and TAP’s expansion in the U.S., this is another interesting option for earning TrueBlue points.
