Why I’m Transferring All of My Capital One Miles to Japan Airlines Right Now

When Capital One first added Japan Airlines (JAL) as a transfer partner last year, I was intrigued but not fully sold. The 3:2 transfer ratio wasn’t quite compelling enough for me to move a big chunk of miles over.

Now, through February 28, 2026, the math looks a whole lot better. Thanks to a limited-time 30% transfer bonus, I’m moving over my entire Capital One balance to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank right now — here’s why.

Limited-Time Capital One to JAL Transfer Bonus

Normally, Capital One miles transfer to Japan Airlines (JAL) Mileage Bank at a 3:2 ratio. So if you send over 1,000 Capital One miles, you’ll end up with 750 JAL miles. That’s doable, but not as exciting considering other Capital One airline partners transfer at a better 1:1 ratio.

However, through February 28, 2026, you’ll get a 30% transfer bonus when transferring Capital One miles to Japan Airlines. With the 30% transfer bonus, 1,000 Capital One miles now turn into 975 JAL miles instead of 750. It’s still not technically 1:1, but it’s close enough to feel meaningfully different.

JAL Miles Unlock Award Space You Won’t See Elsewhere

Here’s why this actually matters. Japan Airlines tends to release more premium cabin award space to its Mileage Bank members than it does to partner programs.

If you’ve tried searching for flights to Japan through American Airlines AAdvantage or Alaska Atmos Rewards, you’ve probably seen it firsthand. Business class can be tough to find, and first class can feel nearly impossible, especially if you’re booking more than 1 seat.

But when you search directly through JAL, you’ll often spot availability that simply doesn’t show up elsewhere except via its own program.

Personally, I have my eye set on booking Japan Airlines’ new Airbus A350-1000 first class sometime this year.

It’s one of the most exciting first class products with fully enclosed suites, beautifully presented meals, and thoughtful Japanese service, which I’ve been lucky enough to experience a few times before. From the moment you step onboard, it just feels different. And for me, JAL’s service is second to none.

I currently have about 50,000 Capital One miles sitting in my account. At the standard 3:2 transfer ratio, that would only yield 37,500 JAL miles. But with the 30% bonus, though, those same 50,000 miles become 48,750 JAL miles.

While 48,750 miles would put me close to the 55,000-mile cost of a JAL business class award ticket between the U.S. and Japan, I’m about halfway to my goal of needing 110,000 miles to book that Japan Airlines first class award on the new A350-1000. I’m confident I can earn the remaining miles without too much trouble.

Why I’m Comfortable Transferring All My Capital One Miles

Typically, I wouldn’t transfer flexible miles speculatively because once they’re moved, you’re stuck with them in that airline or hotel loyalty account. There’s no undo button.

But in this case, I’m comfortable transferring all my Capital One miles to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank since I earn them at an accelerated pace. My Capital One Venture X Business Card earns 2x miles on essentially everything. Between business expenses, quarterly tax payments, and everyday spending, I routinely earn around 100,000 Capital One miles per year.

Capital One Miles

Therefore, I can replenish my balance fairly quickly. So I’m not overly concerned about draining my Capital One account since I know I can accrue the miles consistently. Second, JAL miles are more versatile than most people realize.

Japan Airlines is part of the Oneworld alliance. That means I can redeem Mileage Bank miles not just for JAL flights to Tokyo, but also on carriers like American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and others. So even if my Japan plans change, those miles are still valuable for other trips.

Hot Tip:

JAL doesn’t have many transfer partners. You can transfer from Bilt Rewards at 1:1 and Marriott Bonvoy at 3:1, but I find Capital One miles much easier to earn in large quantities — which makes this 30% transfer bonus the most realistic way for me to build up a meaningful JAL balance.

Final Thoughts

I don’t usually move flexible points and miles without a specific redemption in mind. But this Capital One to Japan Airlines limited-time 30% transfer bonus is one of those moments when the improved math — combined with better award availability — makes it worth acting before it ends on February 28.

While it’s not a perfect 1:1 transfer, it’s very close. Since JAL releases more premium cabin space to its own members, I know I’ll fare better in the long run by taking advantage of this limited-time bonus.
